Read: Mets targets at the winter meetings

by Chris Mazzone on November 29th, 2007 at 12:41 am

Tim Brown at Yahoo! Sports provides an in-depth run down on the players most likely to be talked about at the winter meetings.

He lists the Mets as the favorite for RHP Dan Haren, RHP Joe Blanton, LHP Dontrelle Willis, and as a possibility for LHP Johan Santana (favorite: Yankees) and LHP Erik Bedard (favorite: Diamondbacks).

Brown also mentions that due to the trade environment and the big-market teams involved, we could see other pitchers become available, such as RHP Ben Sheets and RHP A.J. Burnett.

…there have been rumblings that the mets may be primarily targeting haren for the time being and i’m not sure that’s such a bad thing considering the price tag on santana…

…the cost for santana has made some people, myself included, wonder if there have been any discussions about acquiring two starters not named santana. maybe both blanton and haren, or haren and either willis or bedard. it sounds nice in theory but in reality it seems unlikely. if i had to guess, i’d say a starter via trade and one via FA, possibly in the form of Livan Hernandez or Carlos Silva

Read: Santana sweepstakes heating up

by Chris Mazzone on November 29th, 2007 at 12:04 am

John Heyman at Sports Illustrated gives us the latest update on the Johan Santana sweepstakes.

Regarding the Mets, Heyman writes…

“The Mets have talked to the Twins, but their chances are hindered by Minnesota’s apparent disinterest in the Mets’ pitching prospects. The Mets quickly dismissed the Twins’ request for either Jose Reyes or David Wright, and while Minnesota appears interested in the Mets’ positional prospects, the situation is complicated because the Twins might have to spin off one of the Mets’ prospects for a pitcher to have any chance to make it work for them.”

Heyman also mentions that the loss of Matt Garza and acquisition of Delmon Young could hurt the Mets’ chances as well

…even with the red sox refusing to part with Jacoby Ellsbury, santana seems like more and more of a longshot for the mets. this shouldn’t come as a surprise really, but people holding out hope that the mets land santana should realize that – unless more teams eliminate themselves – it will likely take a bigger deal than those that have been speculated so far…
