Buzz: Bedard, O’s Apart; Mets deal rejected
By Jordan Zakarin - Nov 30, 2007 12:01 pm

According to today’s Baltimore Sun, negotiations on a contract extension between the Orioles and ace left hander Erik Bedard stalled yesterday, though talks aren’t considered “dead”.

Regarding the talks, Orioles president of baseball operations Andy McPhail said:

“We’ve had some conversations. We spoke again today, but I’d say that we’ve cooled in that area. We’ve gone on to other things. It doesn’t mean that [negotiations] can’t or won’t be started again. It just means that they’ve cooled for now.”

Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal noted in his column that “the Mets made a strong run at the Orioles’ Erik Bedard at the general managers’ meetings, only to be told that the Orioles wanted more time to try and sign Bedard long-term.”

In fact, today’s Sun cites “several industry sources” in saying that the Mets made a concrete offer to Baltimore, only to have it rejected. The rumored offer included outfielder Carlos Gomez, reliever Aaron Heilman and a third player, believed to be right hander Philip Humber.

…that’s actually a very strong offer, and one I could see the Orioles revisiting if they decide they can’t extend Bedard, and thus want to trade him… I could see them asking for Mike Pelfrey, instead, though, as some people are very down on Humber…

…of course, even if they don’t extend bedard, they have two years left on his contract, so they don’t have to move him, and coupled with the demand for an ace thisĀ  off-season, they’re in a position of strength… meaning, they can ask for a whole lot from any team that misses out on Johan Santana

I wonder if the Mets were to include Mulvey instead of Humber, if the Orioles would take a more serious look at it. Heck, throw in Pena and see if they add Ramon Hernandez

This is where we should use the one chip we have in abundance — money. Tell the O’s we’ll take back some ot their high-priced vets like Hernandez and/or Huff. That way, they’ll be getting solid prospects and salary relief.

This is why I think Baltimore is the best fit for us.

      • squad says:

See below, i love this point.

We should tell them, look, we want Bedard and we’ll take Hernandez and one of your pricey relievers off your hands, assuming both salaries.

      • therealsince86 says:

I think you are spot on, I have been suggesting this for a while. Look for starters on teams that have mid to high payrolls and are looking to unload and rebuild. Examples, O’s, Blue Jays and Rangers.
        1st option :Bedard
Mets get Bedard, Huff and Hernandez.
        O’s get Gomez and Pelfrey.
That trade gets us everything that we need. A dominant pitcher, a catcher and a LH bat.
It gives the O’s a ton of money and two prospects.

        2 Burnett
Mets get Burnett and Brian Tallet (strong LHRP) or other reliever.
Jays get Milledge to start and lead off and Humber. Gives them payroll flexibility as well.

        3 Millwood and Otsuka
Mets get Millwood and a dominant setup man Otsuka.
Rangers get Pelfrey and a prospect. As well as a ton of money freed up from Millwood’s contract.

        • squad says:

I don’t think Blue Jays are looking to rebuild.

I wouldn’t trade Pelfrey for Millwood. I’d rather keep Pelfrey.

        • kevin2elster21 says:

I’m liking option 3. Otsuka can be that consistent link to Wagner and MIllwood can assume Glavine’s innings.

        • therealsince86 says:

Squad, I respect you but you keep missing the point. Millwood gives us innings but the real prize there is Otsuka. I would trade Pelfrey for Otsuka, look at his stats.

  2. wynton says:

I admit I know nothing about Bedard. Is he really that good? Is he a true number 1?

Seems like that would be quite a lot to offer for a pitcher not considered ace-material.

    • 1DoggLJ says:

Last year he was 13-5 with a 3.16 and 221 Ks in 182 IP for a bad team in a band box and in the AL East. Looks like an ace to me. Granted he has not done it for a long time, but last year was a big time year. Also, I personally saw him dominate the Yankees. Nasty curve, great location on fastball, good control (57 BB).

      • Charlie says:

One concern is that over the last four seasons he has only averaged 28 game starts due to injuries. I’m not quite saying he’s injury prone, but he has only been able to make 33 starts once (in 2006).

Also, last year he struck out 50 more batters in 14.1 innings than he did in 2006. I’m not sure if it was a blip or him coming of age. However, his K/9 during his first three years were essentially identical (7.93, 7.94, 7.84). Then, last year it jumped an astounding three Ks per nine to 10.93.

  3. 1DoggLJ says:

I would have to pull the trigger on this trade. In my opinion the Mets NEED to acquire a front line starter and although not fully proven, Bedard could definitely be that. I dont expect them to get Santana, and I am nervous Beane will pull out in the last minute when are depending on him. Besides, I think I would prefer Bedard to Haren anyway. The few times I saw him last year he was absolutely dominant. If the only thing holding this deal back at the GM meeting was that the Orioles wanted to resign him and now they dont think they can then the deal should still be good. Get back on the phone with the Orioles and make this happen

  4. franco45 says:

I think Bedard has good stuff, but by numbers and what I’ve seen. If I were the Orioles, I would want more than that offer, and I think they would get more from another team.

    • metsfanbrad says:

the problem for the orioles when they are looking for trading partners is that they are in the AL East so that eliminates the Yankees and Red Sox as potential trading partners.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

BINGO. But, the Dodgers and Angels are out there, and you could even see someone we haven’t thought about, like the White Sox or Cardinals. The position of strength point is a good one. They’re going to want to be blown away. If they keep him, he could easily win the Cy Young (really) and get them that much more the next year, stick around, etc.

        • BiggieSmalls says:

teh Dbacks are the ones that really scare me.. they’re got some sick prospects that are logjammed.

  5. metsfanbrad says:

I think Omar will push hard for this deal to get done at the Winter Meetings. That is a reasonable package for Bedard, who showed last season in the AL East 13-5 3.16 ERA, that he is No. 1 material, the guy also had a 221/57 K/BB last year. I mean you take him out of that launch pad in Baltimore AND out of the AL east and he could be even more dominate. This is the BEST option because of the ridiculous price of Sanatana and Beane NEVER willing to pull the trigger. If this can’t be done than get Silva and Livan and improve the bullpen.

  6. squad says:

Hopefully Bedard is the target for Minaya this winter. He’s young, lefty, has great control, and is under contract for 2 seasons.

I would go Gomez, Heilman, Pelfrey, Muniz and then ask for Bedard and Hernandez, picking up all of Hernandez’ contract.

Orioles would be getting a guys who could slot into their 5th spot in Heilman, a pitcher with some nice upside in Pelfrey and a worst case scenario of a dominating setup man, a young toolsy prospect highly regarded around baseball in Gomez, and Muniz to help out a crappy, expensive pen. While Minaya’s at it, maybe he could figure out a way to get Bradford back as well, relieving the O’s of another big contract.

    • statnut says:

Not a bad idea, though I think Pelfry’s stock has really taken a hit. I think now is the time to sell high on Mulvey, he’s generated alot of buzz, and if he can help bring in a guy like Bedard, who has lowered his ERA in 4 consecutive seasons, while increasing his strikeout totals in that same time frame, they should do it. Toss in someone like a Carp if you have to.

  7. breadclock says:

A reduced package for Bedard plus getting Leo Mazzone to replace the strobe lights guru would have a bigger positive impact on the organization’s pitching than anything Johan Santana could do alone.

  8. cb32 says:

Now can we stop saying that Omar is doing nothing? I like the fact that what he is doing is rarely in the papers. That is what drives the market up.

Another point – I really like Bedard but I hate how all of a sudden the top 10 pitchers in baseball are worth as much as Santana. Simply said, they are not. Haren being cheap for 3 years gives him an advantage but he isn’t Santana; nor is Bedard. If the industry is high on Gomez, that was a very strong offer for Bedard.

I understand teams are trying to capitalize on a weak free agent market and the Santana sweepstakes, I just hate that the Mets are being asked to pay Santana-like prospects for guys who are not Johan Santana.

  9. BiggieSmalls says:

taking back salary from teh O’s is definitely the way to go.. there are a lot of good matchups on their roster..

    Melvin Mora -ex met
    ChadBrad – ex Met
    Ramon – offered contract

screw the A’s .. they’re windows shoppers. the O’s are clearly looking to clean house from the Duquette days (hours?).

put a creative package together like the Sox did for Beckett.

  10. Salz says:

This is the guy we need for numerous reasons. One, he’s better than Dan Haren. Two, he’s a lefty, which makes him even more valuable. Three, we’re dealing with an easier GM than we would if we dealt with Beane (in Moneyball, Michael Lewis made fun of how Beane negotiated with Minaya). For the Oakland pitchers, I’d be hesitant to give up Heilman because I really believe Heilman could be as effective as Blanton if he started (if not better) and maybe even as good as Haren. But Bedard is on another level. Gomez, Heilman, and Humber would be excellent. Imagine this:

    1) Bedard 2) Pedro 3) Maine 4) Perez 5) Pelfrey/El Duque

The bullpen would be weakened with the loss of our best middle reliever, but here’s hoping Minaya replaces him. Right now the pen without Heilman would be:

Wagner, Feliciano, Sosa, Sanchez, Schoenweiss, Smith (?), and then I have no idea. Are you guys comfortable with any of those guys besides Wagner and Feliciano?

    • acoustic567 says:

I thought it was Steve Phillips whose talks with Beane were made the butt of jokes in Moneyball. Anyway, Andy MacPhail is not as soft a touch as Jim Duquette was, so we wouldn’t be dealing with a pushover here.

  11. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

we definitely need to flex the financial muscles here, we’re taking glavines money off the books plus some green money (haha as opposed to blue or red money). not to mention the money we’ll be saving on delgado after this year. huff wants out of baltimore he called it a “horse(bleep)” city so im sure they would like to unload him and his money, plus hernandez’s money if possible also. baltimore is definitely a good partner and i hope omar can sneak in and get bedard while the santana thing is distracting most gms.

  12. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Now that we got the catcher we needed will it affect any deal for Bedard? Did we have to take Ramon Hernandez back in any deal? I would love Bedard but I hope this terrible trade doesnt hinder that. If Omar walks away from the meetings with Bedard then I will forgive him for one of the worst offseasons thu far.
