Now that we got the catcher we needed will it affect any deal for Bedard? Did we have to take Ramon Hernandez back in any deal? I would love Bedard but I hope this terrible trade doesnt hinder that. If Omar walks away from the meetings with Bedard then I will forgive him for one of the worst offseasons thu far.

we definitely need to flex the financial muscles here, we're taking glavines money off the books plus some green money (haha as opposed to blue or red money). not to mention the money we'll be saving on delgado after this year. huff wants out of baltimore he called it a "horse(bleep)" city so im sure they would like to unload him and his money, plus hernandez's money if possible also. baltimore is definitely a good partner and i hope omar can sneak in and get bedard while the santana thing is distracting most gms.

I thought it was Steve Phillips whose talks with Beane were made the butt of jokes in Moneyball. Anyway, Andy MacPhail is not as soft a touch as Jim Duquette was, so we wouldn't be dealing with a pushover here.

This is the guy we need for numerous reasons. One, he's better than Dan Haren. Two, he's a lefty, which makes him even more valuable. Three, we're dealing with an easier GM than we would if we dealt with Beane (in Moneyball, Michael Lewis made fun of how Beane negotiated with Minaya). For the Oakland pitchers, I'd be hesitant to give up Heilman because I really believe Heilman could be as effective as Blanton if he started (if not better) and maybe even as good as Haren. But Bedard is on another level. Gomez, Heilman, and Humber would be excellent. Imagine this:

1) Bedard 2) Pedro 3) Maine 4) Perez 5) Pelfrey/El Duque

The bullpen would be weakened with the loss of our best middle reliever, but here's hoping Minaya replaces him. Right now the pen without Heilman would be:

Wagner, Feliciano, Sosa, Sanchez, Schoenweiss, Smith (?), and then I have no idea. Are you guys comfortable with any of those guys besides Wagner and Feliciano?

BINGO. But, the Dodgers and Angels are out there, and you could even see someone we haven't thought about, like the White Sox or Cardinals. The position of strength point is a good one. They're going to want to be blown away. If they keep him, he could easily win the Cy Young (really) and get them that much more the next year, stick around, etc.

taking back salary from teh O's is definitely the way to go.. there are a lot of good matchups on their roster..

Melvin Mora -ex met
ChadBrad - ex Met
Ramon - offered contract

screw the A's .. they're windows shoppers. the O's are clearly looking to clean house from the Duquette days (hours?).

put a creative package together like the Sox did for Beckett.

Now can we stop saying that Omar is doing nothing? I like the fact that what he is doing is rarely in the papers. That is what drives the market up.

Another point - I really like Bedard but I hate how all of a sudden the top 10 pitchers in baseball are worth as much as Santana. Simply said, they are not. Haren being cheap for 3 years gives him an advantage but he isn't Santana; nor is Bedard. If the industry is high on Gomez, that was a very strong offer for Bedard.

I understand teams are trying to capitalize on a weak free agent market and the Santana sweepstakes, I just hate that the Mets are being asked to pay Santana-like prospects for guys who are not Johan Santana.
