Completely agree that chasing after middle relievers is a risky business. Bullpens are so fickle, good to bad, bad to good from one year to the next. Starting pitching is where most effort and money should be concentrated. There’s a reason guys are relievers and not startes – they just not that good. The bullpen is a roll of the dice every single year.

That being said I do not want to see Maine traded in a deal for Blanton or Haren. Maine and Blanton are probably a wash now and Maine could be Haren next year. Don’t do it. From a post last week I think…I would trade Milledge, Heilman and Humber for Haren.

I don’t mind this at all. There are fewer things in baseball as stupid as giving a middle reliever a multiyear deal when he’s coming off a good year. Bullpens are a crap shoot.

I’m withholding judgement on Omar until after the winter meetings. If he flies out of Nashville with bupkis, I think I might start getting a little antsy – especially if Haren or even Blanton end up being traded next week.

I don’t understand why the Mets didn’t make more of an effort for Riske. I guess it depends on how many years (and dollars) were involved in that multi-year deal. If it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of $40M/4years, I can understand Omar passing. But if it was something like $10M/2, I have to wonder why the Mets weren’t in it. It seems to me Riske would have been a decent addition to the bullpen.
