Buzz: Mets like Guillen, wait, No They Don’t
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 30, 2007 5:34 am

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, citing ‘some people,’ Mets GM Omar Minaya is interested in signing free-agent OF Jose Guillen if he trades Lastings Milledge or Carlos Gomez, while others say Minaya is not interested in Guillen at all.

in other news, i like peanuts, but i do not like peanut butter…

Guillen hit .290 with 23 HR and 99 RBI this past season.

Speaking of Guillen, remember this.

Why not? Strong clubhouse presence, I am sure he won’t be on Mitchell’s list. And just in case he is, well, then he can take Mota’s place as the team’s resident cheater. Not to mention he is a psychpath. You know I am rally getting tired of Omar being mentioned in connection with every available player on six continents. It really strains his credibility

There’s no way he CAN’T be on Mitchell’s list:

No one buys $19,000 worth of HGH to stare at it. After the Mota disaster, I have to imagine Omar will keep any confirmed steroid guys away from Shea.

Rumors should be taking as a form of entertainment because that’s what the majority of them are.

Why would Ken say that some people say that omar is looking into guillen and at the same time say some one with knowledge of the mets situation is saying he is not. What was the point in his little report?

I think I see where you were going with that one Matt:

Peanut butter is not peanut butter without jelly. Guillen is not Guillen without HGH.

It’s becoming very evident that the Mets don’t have the pieces that team want in exchange for guys like Santana, Blaton, Harden, or Bedard. Unless Omar pulls something off to aquire those pieces (i.e. Milledge for pitching prospects, pitching prospects and Gomez for one of the above guys) I think we’re all going to just have to deal with a guy like Livan Hernandez at the back of the rotation. Is this so bad? Well if the Yankees or Sox get Santana, no one’s beating them anyway so you might as well hold onto your pieces and hope they develop.

Here’s what I think they might do, just because Omar seems desperate to add a “name”

Sign Livan for the 5th spot in the rotation (clearly better than what they had last year, eats innings, and hopefully, like his brother, the Jacket can turn him around).

Trade milledge and Humber for Jason Bay. I don’t like this move, but it gives the Mets more firepower, and Omar his name. It also allows the Mets to hold onto Gomez and let him develop. in ‘09 Bay goes to back to left and Gomez goes to right.

Pelfrey goes to the pen.

I pray that the Mets can do something with their draft picks.

Blanton shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentance with the other 3. He isn’t in the same class of pitcher.

Wow, seems like some people really hate Blanton (as a P). I think he’s solid.

He’s solid, but I don’t think he’s ace material. Bedard and Haren are. I see Blanton as another John Maine, which isn’t bad at all it’s just not a #1 kinda guy.

I can see Blanton being better than Maine.

How do I say this w/o getting flamed?

Maine won 15 games and was the unquestionable ace of the staff last year. But he was a shaky ace and 15 game winner. When he trotted out to the mound and won, it was more relief than an exclamation to his skills.

I still don’t see how everyone thinks Haren is ace material. He’s only had one good half a season in his career.

Granted it’s only one mini-outing, but he was a bit underwhelming at the all star game. His 2nd half numbers are quite pedestrian:

5-6 93.1 IP 4.15ERA 91SO

Aug-Oct
He was 2-6 4.50 ERA

Blanton is a few years older than maine I think. I know he has more time in the majors, and pitchers usually get better by there 3rd year.

Blanton also IIRC had a lousy year in 2006, so 2007 was a rebound year. Career wise, maine was about at the same point in 2007 that Blanton was in 2006. And Maine had a better year in comparision.

Plus, Maine has better stuff and will K more batters.

I agree also about haren. Talented yes, but he hasn’t exactly proven himself to be Pedro in 1999, Gooden in 2005, or even Santan circa 2003-2006

im assuming you mean gooden in 85, but i agree about the sentiment of both haren and blanton good solid pitchers niether are those game 1 of the WS type starters like the other guys mentioned are. as for the Bay idea, i like the thought of getting Bay and i wonder if maybe he can be had without trading milledge. i know that would give us 4 outfielders but considering alou is guaranteed to miss alot of games if we pulled off say gomez and whoever for bay could we possibly just kinda dump alou on some AL team to DH maybe for like a new hot tub in the club house or something? i love alou but id rather have 3 OFers i can rely on all year long. i realy think this whole alou thing could come back to bite us in the rear when we goes on the DL.

Just like how Ken Rosenthal was sure the Mets would sign Barry Zito. And just how he felt the Mets were considering trading Reyes.

Someone wake me up when something actually happens.

dude, milledge & humber won’t even get the pirates to answer the phone…any deal from the mets will have to center around gomez and humber is reading more and more like a spare part toss in to other teams these days
bay will cost at minimum gomez AND pelfrey which I say don’t do

Shoot if they would throw in Marte and we got to keep Milledge. I would easily do Gomez and Pelfrey and a B prospect for Bay and Marte. It would allow Milledge to be traded if need be or be the super 4th OF that could give all 3 OF a break playing around 3-4 games a week.

Bay is coming off a down year, has some injury questions, outfielders aren’t exactly hard to come by, and the Pirates want to build a young nucleus that can grow together.

I don’t think Milledge and Humber for Bay is a reach at all.

Well, Jason Bay sucked last year. He had a worse year than Delgado for pete’s sake. He hit .247 and struck out 141 times. I think his value is low right now and it wouldn’t take very much at all to get him. Not that I would do it though.

Might be worth a shot, if he’s cheap. But playing in Pit and playing in NY are different altogether.

What have I said time and again on this site about Ken Rosenthal. Matt, really, I love nearly everything about this site. But, you really have to stop with the Ken Rosenthal. He writes nonstop any and every rumor that he hears and he may even make some of them up. He just incessantly blabbers and gossips about stuff he knows nothing about. I get that enough at home. He gives me a headache. Hereafter, I’m calling him Ken Tylenol.

how do you think these rumors get started? Rosenthal sits at home in a room with sticky notes on every wall: 1 wall has FA’s, one wall has young stars (i.e. Reyes), one wall has teams, and one wall has a door, so there are no real sticky notes on there but still…he then sits in the middle on a barstool blindfolded, spins around and throws darts at each wall…and voila!!! There is your rumor, oops, I mean, Inside Source, after all, he is inside a room…what a dillhole

So in this fantasy Rosenthal sits in a room so small that there’s no room for stick notes AND a door on the same wall? Is he in a holding cell somewhere? If so, why are you having prison fantasies about Ken Rosenthal?
