i will be on the call, and will do my best to get a few quotes up as fast as i can…

…by the way, i know that this blog is running slowly…i am working on it…this will be resolved sooner than later, but requires some heavy lifting that cannot be done overnight

If you can say something, tell Omar he’s stupid.

    • yagottabelieve says:

What a truly awful trade. I don’t know what aggravates me more… that we traded Milledge for a younger version of Mike DeFelice and a 5th outfielder — or that we could have traded him for Manny two years ago and said no.

      • kevin2elster21 says:

        haha

I like how Church went from 4th to 5th. Maybe we can bring back Agbayani, Payton and Timo. HOF OF’s if I ever saw one.

    • cver says:

      Hey Benny! RIGHT ON!

  2. Benny Blanco from da Bronx says:

If you have the ability to say anything, tell Omar he’s a dummy.

  3. byron_t says:

Lets throw eggs at him….what a bone head.

  4. pezao says:

If you can say anything please wish the Mets organization a Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year from all of us fans!

  5. toomanyuniforms says:

I’d ask him how this deal is consistent with a desire to build a contender from within. Stupid move.

THAT SAID, maybe — just maybe — people thinking Milledge was Grady Sizemore need to take a deep breath and realize that most of Major League Baseball, including all of those highly paid statisticians in various front offices, didn’t agree.

    • yagottabelieve says:

No, he’s not Grady Sizemore but he still is one of the best OF prospects in baseball – in fact his stats indicate that he is still everything he was projected to be.

At age 22, he hit .272, slugged .446, and his numbers project to 21 HR and 87 RBI over 550 ABs.

If we traded him in a package for an ace, fine – but we got a younger version of Mike DeFelice and a 5th outfielder.

    • the clap says:

Speaking of Grady Sizemore, ask Omar about his deal as the Expos GM to trade Sizemore, Brandon Phillips and Cliff Lee to the Indians for a 17 game rental of Bartolo Colon.

Omar had permission from MLB to wreck the “we have no future” Expos, but with his job on the line now depending on 2008, he again has destructive tunnel vision and he’s out insanely trying to better the 2007 regular season record no matter what damage he does to the team beyond then.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

That’s right — he traded Sizemore once, ergo, he’s done it again.

        Does not follow.

Ryan Church is not a bad player, at all, and for once, we can say that the statistics will likely translate to Shea. He hit 40+ doubles, which is a ceiling for Milledge.

Now, do I like the deal? Heck, no. Scale of 1 to 10, one being trading Kazmir for Zambrano, and 10 being trading Zambrano for Kazmir, it’s a 2 or 3. No young for old unless a top starting pitcher is involved. But we need to get past this idea that Milledge was a surefire superstar. I still think there’s a chance he is, and that at some point next season, we’ll be regretting this deal, but let’s face it — he’s not Grady Sizemore. He reminds me more of Marlon Byrd, who, if anything, was considered a better prospect (and a much better defender.)

That said, don’t believe the hype — they definitely sold low on Milledge. I remember Christian Warrior talking about how we had missed our window with Milledge, and thinking that was a bit . . . off. Well, guess what? It doesn’t seem that way. Kudos, CW. Never mind Manny for Milledge, If we really, honestly could have had Blanton for Milledge last off-season (which I kind of doubt), what an astnishing missed opportunity. Think the A’s would be interested in Schneider and Church for Blanton? Ha.

One last thing. Marty Noble, giving the Mets’ spin on the deal, immediately mentions “off-the-field” issues. Low class, man. He has something way in his past, and a couple of teapot tempests. He was overscrutinized because of the criminal record, and if that’s truly why the Mets traded him, they’re morons.

        • kevin2elster21 says:

“Scale of 1 to 10, one being trading Kazmir for Zambrano, and 10 being trading Zambrano for Kazmir”

The scale to which all trades should be measured against. Great analogy.

As for Marty Noble, he’s a smart guy who drinks the spiked cool aid. He’s the Mets version of any play by play announcer/analyst for the Yankees.

        • dannyb says:

…or Mike Francesca. Actually, Sweeny Murti isn’t too far behind with his Yanks bravado. Makes me want to throw up.

  6. JavaJoe says:

I’m a bit surprised that the Mets need Church and Schnieder.

    Trade Millidge….ok I understand the reasons cited but…for a couple of ehh’s?

    Also in the division?

Millidge of the Nats comes to the plate in Sept. with the Mets needing a win……3-2 runners on 2nd and 3rd…

I hope this doesn’t haunt us..

  7. 1DoggLJ says:

Omar is scheduled to be on Mike and the Maddog at 4:05. Cant wait to hear how he spins this one.

  8. Nightlife says:

    First question;

    “This is a joke, right?”

    • kevin2elster21 says:

      Here’s a new phrase:

Omar Minaya, today, announced the acquisition of two scrubs to the dismay of Mets fans. But lo and behold, Omar was just toying the Mets loyals as he “Torrealba-ed” the trade.

  9. Mr. Metster says:

Convey to Omar all the best wishes and holiday appreciation of Nats fans everywhere.

    • circelli17 says:

I love how people immediately point to the “he can’t hit breaking balls” line about Milledge. THE GUY IS 22 YEARS OLD!!! That aren’t very many plus breaking ball hitters at 22. Have Met fans not seen how far a guy like Jose Reyes has improved from one year to the next on pitch recognition and the ability to hit breaking balls. I mean even as bad as Lastings was last year against the slow stuff he was STILL 10x better than Gomez, and unlike the guy Omar is infatuated with, Lastings can actually hit the hard stuff.

This is a truely awful trade

  10. eddiekrules says:

I have to believe this leads to something. The Mets have 1 too many MLB ready C’s. Is there a blockbuster 8 person deal for R .Hernandez and Bedard? Omar is just getting started. Plus I am amazed. you would think that Milledge is a can’t miss All Star. When did he show us that? He is a middle of the road player that can’t hit breaking stuff. He has time to grow granted, but do the Mets know him better than Nats? I see 2 mediocre MLB’ers for 1 mediocre MLB’er in this deal.

    • yagottabelieve says:

I hope you’re right. Because we could have gotten the same level of production by re-signing LoDuca and Greene and kept Milledge on the team.

The “one too many RH hitter” argument is absurd for two reasons:

      1. Ryan Church is a TERRIBLE hitter for a corner OF. You might as well just stuck Marlon Anderson or Endy Chavez out there.

      2. Who’s there when Alou spends his usual 70 games on the DL?

      • the clap says:

Don’t forget Beltran will also be having his annual oblique problems, so expect many games this year with a Chavez, Marlon Anderson, Church outfield, and then when one of them go down, we’ll have fun with Damion Easley and Carlos “I’m not ready for the majors but I’ll try to bunt my way on 4 times a game” Gomez filling in.

        • yagottabelieve says:

The more I think about it, the more I don’t see how this could be a precursor to a bigger deal.

Who might we trade now that we wouldn’t have been able to trade before? Estrada? We got him for Mota so anyone who wanted him could have traded for him. Castro? He was a free agent who signed for peanuts. Church? Does anyone really think he’s the missing piece of a puzzle to a deal for an ace?

The only possible way this sets up another deal is if the player we plan to trade is Schnieder himself (if we had a blockbuster that would get us Molina/Cain or Hernandez/Bedard and the Giants or O’s wanted a starting catcher back). But having dealt Milledge, would we now be willing to trade Gomez, Pelfrey and Heilman too (because I can’t see either team making a deal for less than that)

    • dannyb says:

I wanted a defensive catcher. I don’t mind that part of this deal. I think Ryan Church is a nice player. That’s fine too. But, he is 29 and Schneider is 31.
Would you want a mediocre unknown quantity who has lots of time to grow into a very good player?….Or would you prefer a 29 year old player who has reached his full potential…think Ben Johnson (although I think Church is a little better. just using the same point in their career as a frame of reference).

I think if Milledge was given a chance to play every day, as a 23 year old, he would have been just as good, if not better than Church. I have to say, I disagree with the move. Milledge hasn’t hit his ceiling yet, while the two players we got in return have.

  11. tfc3rid says:

At least get an arm back, geez… Milledge was ‘allegedly’ our trading chip.

  12. metsman69 says:

And another Mets first round draft pick bites the dust.

  13. posner says:

Since when is a rookie who hits .272 with decent power and seems like he will be a great defensive player a middling MLB player. What has ryan church or brian schneider ever done? This trade is embarrassing

  14. a817 says:

if omar offered milledge for lidge, i am sure houston would have done it. Milledge is better than borne. That deal would have solved a hole at least…

  15. kevin2elster21 says:

Tell Omar to enjoy his new GM position for Washington.

  16. BlueandOrangeTears says:

I agree with the trade. Productive OFs are easy to come. A defensive minded catcher who works well with pitchers and already has a relationship with your franchise player (Wright) is an ideal fit.

As for Church, he’s a good platoon player but I’m sure he’ll be a solid addition but if he goes in a package for Haren, so be it.

PS: These guys are white!!!! What’s the deal with that? j/k

  17. CHIEFSLAPAHO75 says:

I can’t believe Omar traded for 2 white guys.

  18. jerseymetsfan says:

rayn church or joel youngblood? who do you want in RF?

  19. Buy rohypnol….

    Buy rohypnol….

  20. metsman69 says:

    OY VEY !!!!!

How ironic that he comes to the Mets along with Brian Schneider!!!

  21. toomanyuniforms says:

Whoa — before inciting a riot, you need to look at what he said. Like it or not, it’s central to many religions that the only path to salvation is through that particular religion. It has nothing to do with anti-Semitism.

  22. kevin2elster21 says:

True, but we don’t need loud mouths. Do you abhor rappers? L-Millz has a love for music and rap is in his blood. He needed to express his inner pains through the art of rapping.

We don’t need to hear it. controversy is controversy. Keep your mouth shut and hit the ball hard. Millz & Church.
