News: Minaya on Rumors about Trading Reyes
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 30, 2007 4:35 am

Meeting with reporters at Citi Field yesterday, Mets GM Omar Minaya emphatically stated that, though teams continue to ask for him, Jose Reyes is his shortstop, he is part of the team’s ‘core,’ and he does not see trading him for ‘one of those guys being mentioned.’

Minaya, while talking to reporters…

“We have a plan here with Jose, David, and those kind of guys.  To trade one of them for a pitcher, it doesn’t make any sense to me.”

as i wrote yesterday, from what i understand, the Mets are not trading reyes…it’s that simplepeople can rumor about it all they want, but that doesn’t mean the Mets are considering it, and that’s all that really matters at the end of the day

If then we assume this is truth and not GM-speak, we have Milledge*, Gomez, Pelphrey* and Humber and an assortment of injury prone fossils, as chips.
Good luck at the meetin’, Omar!
    Dark days my fellow fans…
*opens a new hole in RF
**opens a new hole as 5th starter

    • matt_bucc says:

      okay, let’s trade reyes.

*opens up a new hole at shortstop and the top of the lineup, once filled by a dynamic 24-year old still a few years from his prime who did nothing but slump for half a season.

      some peope

    • pcmetsfan07 says:

Whr do you assume that Pelfrey, or Humber for that matter, will be only 5th starters? Give these kids a chance. I really think Pelfrey has a chance to be something special, especially if he figures out how to harness his fastball. His best outing last year, the one hitter against the Braves, was awesome. He was topping out at about 91-92 and throwing a hard sinker. If he ever develops a third pitch he has a chance to be something really special.

Sometimes I wonder why people bother being Mets fans, all they do is bash guys continually. This team is still solid, and they have a chance to win next year (yes, I know it’s not as good as the chance they had in ‘06).

Why get rid of one of your stud players (Reyes) to get a guy who only plays once every 5 days? It’s absurd to think about.

      • stickguy says:

I agree about the overall solid nature of the team, and that they certainly can win in 2007.

I think the reference to 5th starter wasn’t that it was their ceiling (which it isn’t), just that it is the spot they would be filling in 2007. Or just that they would have 4, and you need a 5th!

I usually let your grammar mistakes pass, Matt, but come on–”infatically?” I think you mean “emphatically.”

You do proofread before you publish, don’t you?

    • m00kie says:

that’s more of a spelling mistake than a grammar mistake isn’t it??

      well if we’re being picky

      ;P

      • bigchart333 says:

INFATICALLY huh? lil phonetic there huh, what’s next?
        Hozay Rayus?
I heard the Mets are lookin at Hozay Geeyen also…

I think that Omar kind of played himself into a corner by saying publicly he was looking to acquire a big game pitcher. Not only did he get all the fans railed up about something that may not happen but had the gm’s looking to rebuild or trade some pitchers salivating from the mouth. Now the media has latched onto the story and makes Omar seem desperate for one; at the same time making are prospects seem like they have lost value or are not that valuable(Of course that’s what the other clubs are going to say because they want more players). We all know we need pitching help but most teams in baseball do too. That’s a big mistake he made and let’s just hope he doesn’t make one for the books.

Here’s a question – Would the Mets be willing to trade in a package Maine AND Perez? They won’t trade Reyes but would they package Maine, Perez, F Martinez, Mulvey and Gomez – let’s say, because I think that would get it done. It’s a ton and I’m not saying they should but offering both of those starters would get the talks started I think. Just another line of thinking, for what it’s worth.

    • RukusInQueenz says:

I think as mets fans we should hope for the best and like always know the worst is more likely.

    • mhochman says:

If we trade Maine and Perez for one pitcher, who do we use to fill, the hole opened by trading 2 of our rotation guys?

    • matt_bucc says:

yeah that would be completely counter productive, especially when you consider the fact that just one of those guys would likely give any pitching package the extra support it needed.

we should not trade either though. we need to be adding quality starters, trading from other areas on our team, not swapping 15 wins (perez or maine) for 15 wins from someone we think is more talented (Santana, Haren, etc). we certainly can’t be swapping 30 wins out of the rotation (Perez and Maine) for 15, even if it does have a chance to become 20.

      • cver says:

Absolutely true. But, to play devils advocate here a little further, if we got a guy who is as solid as Santana for 7 years or so (and this guy is like a Pedro, Clemens – a guy that will be great for years, at least it seems), we could then build around him. Sign Colon maybe and Wolf – I dunno, plus we’d still have hopefully 2 of the 3 of Humber, Mulvey and Pelfrey. It probably doesn’t make sense to trade Maine AND Perez. It might make sense to trade one of them. But both might get it done without trading Reyes or Wright. It’s just a matter of thinking things all the way through and as you believe and might be right about, what it would take to get Santana might not be worth it. On the other hand, to have a “true ace” – it might be the ONLY WAY. It’s a matter of priorities. Do the Mets want to try and win a championship without a getting a true ace, hope that one develops right under their noses, or try to win a championship without a true ace. Most, but not all champions have one – 2007 Beckett, 2006 – Carpenter, 2005 – none really (Buerhle – sort of Maine/Perez-ish), 2004 – Pedro, 2003 – Dontrelle, 2002 – none, 2001 – Johnson/Schilling, 2000 – Clemens, etc.

    • bigchart333 says:

that is clearly the dumbest thing i’ve ever heard in my life. By far, the stupidest trade idea OF ALL TIME, posted on this site.
I think if we trade wright, reyes, maine, ollie, f-mart, and l-millz, we could get johan and maybe nathan..we might have to throw in castillo, estrada, wagner and heilman. And pelfrey. And humber and mulvey. And our next 5 first round draft picks. And our sandwich pick from Glavine. And cash considerations. That might get it done

  5. jdon says:

Fine, don’t deal Reyes, I am ok with that, but I don’t believer that part about having “a plan.”

  6. Ceetar says:

I’m curious, are the Mets offices completed in Citi Field now that they’re meeting with reporters there? I know it was the first thing they aimed to finish, but i’m curious if they officially moved now?

It seems if the Mets are looking to open onthe road in 2009, it’ll be three years in a row opening on the road, which is kind of lame. I always enjoy being at the first game of the season. The Yankees are also opening a new stadium, why not let them worry about ‘getting the stadium ready’ and open on the road?

  7. napes22 says:

I don’t even know why this ever became a rumor. The Twins want Reyes, there is no way we would ever trade him. It’s amazing how quickly forget about the year he had in 2006, or even the 1st half he had in 2007. He’s still a kid, and he had a rough half year.

What kills me even more is people calling up radio shows and saying “trade reyes for hanley ramirez, or package him for rollins.” What will that accomplish, and what GM would actually do that?

The “new” Mets fans will continue to bother me in this way. The group of fans that were nowhere to be found before 2006, and now think the team owes them something.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

what plan is Omar talking about?? Yes he has a few core guys(Wright,Beltran,Reyes) but he adds old injury prone players to compliment the core players. On another note, the packages offered from the Sox and Yankees are a freakin joke. Kennedy,Melky, and Tabata or Crisp,Lester,Lowrie and Masterson. It sounds like Omar doesnt want to trade Gomez or else we could probably trump the other offers.

      • pcmetsfan07 says:

I think if Omar wanted to use Gomez as the marquee name in the deal, it would have had to have been before the Twins traded their SS away.

    • The Stork says:

Well said Napes22. Me and my family have been bleeding for this team since 1973. In the realm of the possible there is no way the Mets should consider a move that includes Reyes or Wright. For anyone. The Mets need tweaking, not wholesale reconstruction. Guys that young and that good are part of the long term and should not be considered “chips” to be played in that stupid we must win now / we must compete with Bronx Corporation mindset that can only lead to doing stupid things.
