The problem is Johann has a no-trade clause, and he isn’t going to let himself go to a team that isn’t a World Series contender. That limits the field to 5-6 teams right there. Second, he wants $150 million a year. That limits the field to about 3-4 teams.

The no-trade clause is limiting the ability of the Twins to be in the driver’s seat, because they can only negotiate with teams approved by Santana, and these teams know it.

The best thing for the Mets would be for Minn to keep Santana. Like it or not, the fit does not seem to be there unless the Mets try to overwhelm in numbers, and that would be a truly bad decision.

If Sanatana isn’t traded, at least Mets can offer money as a FA- and the Mets CAN offer as much money as any one else (whether they will or not is another story).

I’d love to get a number 1, but I don’t want a Bartolo Colon to Montreal type deal.

Twins are definitely taking the correct approach here. I think the guy they really want here is Joba. By going to the Yanks first, getting their offer out into the public, then going to Boston and letting the media know they are leaning towards that deal.

This puts the Yanks in a spot where they can sit back and watch the Sawx build a Santana, Beckett, Dice-K, Schilling, Wakefield rotation…or sell Joba at the height of his value, along with Melky to get Santana to the Bronx. I don’t envy Brian Cashman.

FMart had a hand injury last year and missed a large chunk of time. Plus, he still hit .270+ which for being the youngest player in the league is very impressive.

3 times thru a major league lineup is a great equalizer, Joba. Although I must say I am impressed. . Hughes is not overpowering. Needs to be spot on all the time. Kennedy has so so stuff. Needs to be more perfect than Hughes

Napes22 is right on. Buster Olney said this morning on Mike and Mike that the Mets don’t have the chips to get Santana or Haren, because “neither the Twins nor the A’s see Pelfrey or Humber as any more than #4/#5 or middle relievers down the line.” Olney predicts that Sanatan and Haren will go 1 then 2 to the Yanks or Sox for similar packages (top proven pitching prospect with #1-#3 potential, proven outfielder, and another unproven pitching prospect with #3-#4 potential). Olney made it very clear that the Mets just don’t have the chips. And, he is right if the market remains as it has.
