The Associated Press is reporting that while 3B Miguel Cabrera is being shopped heavily by the Florida Marlins, LHP Dontrelle Willis is not likely to be traded.
“The Marlins are less likely to trade left-hander Dontrelle Willis, who is in line to make $7 million or more next season. The former 22-game winner is coming off his worst year (10-15, 5.17 ERA), reducing his trade value, and his agent said he expects Willis to still be with the Marlins when spring training begins.
‘That’s my gut feeling,’ agent Matt Sosnick said. ‘I’m often surprised by the Marlins. They keep things close to the vest. But I would expect him to be back.’ “
…i’m sure everyone will love reading about a team deciding not to trade a player who’s value has seemingly plummeted. granted, the two teams are in completely different situations, i’m just sayin’…

maybe omar should be taking notes on selling high and buying low.
^^^ what he said…
Two starters for the price of one? I think Omar did pretty well. Granted, he could have got more if he had moved him a copuple of years ago, but that’s baseball.
Omar keeps things close to the vest, also. No one saw this deal comng. While we all play Roto on this blog, Omar is looking at his chips and cashing in the ones he can.
In 2007, Church was 10/25 at Shea. 3 HR and 9 RBI. He likes to hit at Shea. This could actually work out.
I think a deal for a starter will get done. We won’t expect it. Everything we read rumor wise is a smoke screen.
or he likes ot hit Mets pitching at Shea…those are some of the dumbest stats around, how a newly aquired player hit at his new ball park considering he was hitting against that team’s pitching. Maybe he just rakes the Mets and Shea has nothing to do with it. However it is spun, this deal stunk, it’s Kazmir-Zambrano II and Omar will be on his way out after this upcoming year.
This deal is only a dud if Schneider is in the Mitchell report and Church is hitting a buck 80 in June.
to compare this to the kazmir is a bit of a stretch.
Church is like Nady with better defense so I look forward to seeing him in the lineup.
But I’m still scratchig my head over this trade. It’s definitely not something that Omar absolutely needed to do. And I’m left wondering what they plan to do with Estrada (and what they had against him in the first place)?
As I said yesterday, I’m willing to wait a week and see how Omar emerges from the Winter Meetings. But if the Mets are still in essentially the same position they’re in now with regard to pitching, I may have to consider buying a ticket for the “dump Omar” bandwagon.
I am pissed that Lastings is gone. He was one of very few guys who always played with fire and passion. IN three years, no doubt he will be hitting .300 for the Yankees as they wain another title.
Too bad, I think Willis is perfect for NY. I’ve seen him beat Pedro at Shea from both sides of the plate. On a team with a real chance to win and a little Jacket, WIllis could be our #1.
dirtybear, what are u smoking??? Willis is an overrated #3/#4 pitcher now and he only had one great year like Zito. Pedro is a better pitcher with both arms tied behind his back.
The New York Daily News reported the New York Mets offered the now traded Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman and Phillip Humber to the Baltimore Orioles and that deal was rejected. The Daily News reported a baseball source said had the Mets offered either Carlos Gomez or Ryan Church it might have been accepted. The deal was most likely for Erik Bedard.
If that rumor is true (and it is a rumor), I hope Omar plugs Gomez into that package and pulls the trigger. With Chruch as an established OFer, the deal would allow F-Mart to develop and maybe be ready for RF in 2009 (with Church replacing Alou in LF). Maybe they can throw Estrada in and get a relief pitcher/prospect. But the rumor is probably too good to be true.
I can’t see Omar not pulling the trigger on Bedard if he only had to give up Gomez, Heilman and Humber… even if he has a man crush on Carlos
gomez, humber and Heillman for Bedard would work for me.
Or Snell and Nady, my new focus.
That would be great, although they’d probably have to replace Gomez with Church for that deal. Although the defense in RF would decline with Nady, at least he could play 1B when Delgado needs a rest. And Nady can rake.
But then the question is, why would Pittsburgh go for that deal?
