According to Jon Heyman at Sports Illustrated, the Yankees are now the favorites to acquire Johan Santana.
Helping the Yankees cause is their willingness to include RHP Phil Hughes along with OF Melky Cabrera and another prospect, combined with the Red Sox reluctance to part with RHP Clay Buchholz or Jacoby Ellsbury.
…pick your poison here. arguably the best pitcher in the game joining the best hitter in the game, or santana going to the defending champs to form one of the best rotations in a long time. at least he looks to be staying in the american league…

Ugh. Anyone but the Yankees, please. Having said that, if Santana ever does sign an extension with them, they will end up paying a 40% Luxury Tax penalty on top of whatever his contract calls for.
I really don’t view Boston as “poison” or the Evil Empire II yet. There LT payroll is roughly the same as the Mets’ right now. It’s not as if they spend significantly more than the Mets or the third highest spender in the AL. The Yankees are still in a class by themselves when it comes to spending.
Now that the Yankees are getting closer to acquiring Santana, I remember when we were nervous about the Yankees acquiring Randy Johnson. That didn’t work out, and I don’t think Santana with the Yankees will work out either. Too bad.
You have a good point except for the fact that the Yankees got Randy Johnson at the very end of his career. I think Santana has at least 3-4 *very good* years left and the other years will at least be good. I also don’t think he has the personality issues that RJ has. He will be a much better fit in NY than the big unit was.
Maybe, but this also smells like a Kevin Brown-type deal. The difference is Brown was 33 when he signed his 8 year deal. Santana is younger but he is coming off equally great years.
That said, Santana is obviously worth it. I can’t believe the Yanks or Sox are holding back one or two players right now.
Let them battle it out. Thank god the Red Sox got involved or the Twins might settle for a package headlined by just Kennedy and Cabrera. The bigger the battle, the more likely the Yankees are to relinquish prized pitching prospects that otherwise might have given them very good cheap pitching for years to come.
It sickens me to see the Yankees using their prospects so much more smartly than us. Melky Cabrera is like a Lastings Milledge, just a bit worse in every aspect of his game.
Good – just sign him somewhere and get it over with – like Bond’s home run fiasco, this occupies too much of our time and hopes. We just did not have the chips to play in the Santana race. So once he signs somewhere, we can get back to reality and hope Omar nets us some pitching which we *do* have the trading chips for.
not true–yanks and mets get a pass for however long because they are building new stadiums.
the rich get a little richer
yes true — AFAIK, the stadium loophole only affects revenue sharing monies, not the LT.
I think the stadium loophole is fair, especially since most of the costs are coming from the teams and not public funding.
Also, it’s not a full “pass.” Teams can only deduct part of the stadium costs to reduce, not eliminate, their revenue sharing obligations.
C’mon, Epstein, let’s start that bidding war!!!
I hope George Jr. panics at the thought of Santana going to Boston and ends up giving up Hughes, Chamberlain, Cabrera, Cano, and about 4 other minor leaguers.
I would much prefer he ends up on the Yankees actually. If the Red Sox ever got Beckett and Santana the Yankees would have to just about corner the market on future free agent top starters and have to overpay by trade for Haren, Willis, etc.
Let the Yanks get Santana, because the Red Sox dont have to respond.
It’s amusing how the Yankees operate, because with thier young arms they really dont have to make these trades, they just have to wait 2-3 for the pitchers to develop. But thats way too long for them to wait…
Like we waited for Isringhausen, Pulsipher, and Wilson? You go and get Santana right now because prospects are prospects.
Gregg Jeffries had a great firt year or two as well. It is better to cash in on a guy like Santana.
Perhaps if the Yankees acquire Santana he will disappoint their fans much as A-Rod has, If he puts up big numbers, but the Yanks don’ go all the way, he will be blamed and he will be booed.
Also, should they acquire Santana, the Yanks are merely catching up to the Red Sox. Once the Red Sox respond, they are back on top.
Why does anyone talk about Yanks and payroll? They have no limit so there are no issues regarding a mistake. And comparing Santana and Johnson is nonsense. Santana on either team is the clear cut favorite to win the Cy Young. And Boston’s payroll is 40 Mill more than the Mets, think that would by a nice player or two?
So a couple of weeks ago there were dreams of Arod and Santana. Now we likely get Church and Colon or some other waste of flesh.
Omar has to get canned along with bungling Willie if the Mets don’t win the division,
It’s good to be back as a second class team. Who said you can never go home?
I agree that we should be winning the division in 2008, but there’s not much that could be done on either of these fronts- A-Rod was obviously not leaving the Yanks outside of a ridiculous offer from someone else (like a guaranteed 350 mil over 10 years), which would have been terrible for us to do and Omar would have been mostly strongly criticized for, and if the Yanks are going to offer Hughes, regardless of the real value of Cabrera, neither the Mets nor about 27 other teams have a chance at beating that.
Boston’s 2007 payroll is NOT $40 million more than the Mets. It’s roughly 28 mill more.
However, their Luxury Tax payroll is roughly the same as the Mets because the Mets have a lot of players on the front of backloaded contracts and the Red Sox don’t. And it’s the LT payroll that is limiting team’s spending.
Unlike the Yankees, I believe the Red Sox do have concerns with repeatedly exceeding LT thresholds by huge amounts. If they got Santana, I believe they would try to shed payroll (ie, Crisp)
Being conservative, Mr. Santana is going to make $84 Million dollars over 7 years (the cheapest contract available). Why not take $83 Million and make a time machine? “What!?!” you say. “Is he crazy? Proposing a time machine? Balderdash!” Well, let’s think about this for a second. The time machine is a long sought after invention and could be used for a multitude of reasons. In this case, go back in time and offer Cy Young a contract of $1 Million over 10 years. Crazy? Of course not! Cy Young would love to have made $100K a year. He would have been the richest man in baseball. So you go back to his first year in baseball, sign him, warp him back to 2007, then let him start winning the award named after him. Once Cy Young is pitching and making tons of money for your team, you then license out the rights to the time machine and make even more money off of it. Cy gets his dough, the team makes money, and the world finally gets the time machine!
Is this crazy? I don’t think so. We can’t exacty snatch Hiro off of Heroes to help us out. That would just be silly.
What are you smoking? Must be pretty good stuff.
i really want to see the twins get more. hughes is great, but melky is completely overrated. if he wasn’t in new york nobody would know who he is. the prospect, i guess, is tabada and he’s way too young to be banking on for anything. with pridie coming up the twins don’t really need melky. they should be aiming for hughes and cano. as it stands the red sox package would help them more.
i’d really like to see the twins break out the checkbook on this. when you look at twins message boards or blogs they barely even discuss the trade packages because they’re just so desperate to re-sign him. it’s kinda sad.
i always liked santana, but with the yankees in front, i’m preemptively getting into hate-mode.
There is only 1 poison: The Yankees. I would hate to see Yank fans walking around in Santana shirts.
