According to an MLB.com report, the Angels will not offer salary arbitration to RHP Bartolo Colon, making him a free agent.
Colon, who has been battling shoulder and elbow problems since 2006, has a career record of 146-95 and a 4.10 ERA in 306 starts.
…there is an obvious history between colon and Omar Minaya so it will be interesting to see where this goes in the next few weeks…he could be a low risk high reward signing…

i despite omar. of course he will pick up this overweight wreck of a pitcher. that’s omar. add livian hernandez while you’re at it omar. the guy is pathetic. this team is pathetic. seriously fans, it’s time to find an organization that treats its fans with some respect.
Agreed — I ahte all of the moves you think Omar is going to do too.
Despise? Really?
Ok this trade looks like crap right now and the fact that the Nats are replacing Schneider with Jesus Flores really really hurts, but Omar has done a lot of good with some of his moves (Oliver Perez, John Maine, El Duque).
Let’s see what else he can do to turn this around.
Colon is a whale. The last thing I want to see is a 300lb bloated pig on the mound for my team.
NO to Colon.
NO to Livan 5.00 Hernandez.
oh, that was “despise” omar
If they can’t land a healthy front line starter, then just stay away from the big risks like Colon and Livan. Give Pelfrey, Humber, and Mulvey shots. Livan is an almost guaranteed 5.00 ERA waiting to happen.
Agreed. In fact, it they could land Bedard without dealing Pelfrey I think that would be ideal. I would love to see a rotation of: Pedro, Bedard, Maine, Ollie, Pelfrey.
How cool would it be to have 4 pitchers who can hit the mid 90s consistently for a change?
Colon would come for only money, and next to nothing at that in today’s market. The guy may be a fat bastard, but he had a strong September and still has the goods.
What’s the harm in just giving him some money and bringing him in as an option. Not like our current options are ideal. I’d rather more than less.
If they could get him at a reasonable salary for a year, I would be in favor of it. I would much rather they take a flyer on someone like Colon than go with Livan for 2 years of Silva for 4.
Colon only pitched 13.2 innings in September and gave up 8 runs, 6 earned. How is that strong?
The problem if they sign him is they give him at the very least 4-5 mill and if he stinks then you know Omar won’t get rid of him. Just like with Mota, Omar tends to hang on to his mistakes all year long and they end up blocking a space that could be used to give younger kids a chance, while hurting the team. If Omar was more willing to quickly eat contracts and rectify his mistakes then I wouldn’t mind taking a chance with Colon. But he could become an albatross just like Mota and Lima were.
Bartolo Lima, anyone? Everytime I see this guy pitch he gets clocked. His idea of success is holding Arod to something less than a grand slam.
Colon is like a free $10 chip at the casino. It’s a can’t lose. Go for it.
And I am not an Omar defender. He and Willie will both have to go this year.
he’s a “free chip” if he signs a minor league contract for the vet min..
if he takes up a 40 man spot and more than 4-5 mil he becomes an excuse to use him and blocks other cheaper, better options
I’ll take Colon for a year. Maybe a better deal comes deadline time?
this is NOT the Bartolo Colon from 2005.
he has been abysmal for the past two years..
he’s obese and will be 35 in May of 08.
he gave up 132 hits in only 99 innings last year.
thats what happens with pitchers over 30. they can fall off a cliff faster then Evil Kenievel (RIP).
when they do they’re useless.
move on Omar
not to beat a dead horse, but if we had kazmier, we wouldn’t need to aquire a frontline starter and could focus on the bullpen..don’t trade the young arms!
let our farm system work its way into the major league roster, and if they’re not good enough to win, then WE DON’T WIN. I think pelfry could turn into a top 3 starter..he’s only 23 and has a high 90s fastball..
I think pedro is gonna to have a monster year..
During the season, if I remember correctly, Bowden wanted either Gomez or Milledge to pry Cordero or Rauch away from him. It seems to me that Minaya should have revisited those talks if he felt he needed to move Milledge right now. Coming away from that trade without getting a pitcher – starter or reliever – was simply a waste of a prospect chip, and one of our better ones.
Personally, I don’t have a problem trading away a prospect within our division no matter how good that player is supposed to be. But I do expect to get decent value back at positions of need. We did not NEED another catcher when we already had Estrada to go along with Castro. Granted, neither catcher is as good defensively as Schneider seems to be, but so what ? We have lived with poor defensive catchers before, we could have lived another season or two with poor-to-average defense from the catcher’s position until Tony Pena, Jr. was ready to take over.
I don’t know about you guys, but a 7th and 8th slot batting order of Milledge and Castro/Estrada looks alot better from a production point of view than Church and Schneider does. Yuck.
We did not NEED to trade for Schneider. What we could have used was either Cordero or Rauch, or even Ayala for that matter. Acquiring one of those Nationals relief pitchers would have allowed us to more easily part with Heilman in a future trade. Cordero, Rauch or Ayala would have been a very capable replacement for Heilman, and a much better return for parting with Milledge. Minaya let himself get snookered by Bowden, no two ways about this.
As a side note, I totally agree with others that neither Schneider or Church were the kind of players that other teams like the A’s or Orioles would demand for their Ace starter. Yes, they both have MLB experience, but that experience from where I am standing has been nothing to brag about. They are REPLACEMENT LEVEL PLAYERS. If in fact these guys had greater value than that, we should have seen rumors to the effect that the A’s or Orioles were demanding Schneider and Church along with multiple prospects.
I monitor all sorts of baseball rumors, and I have not seen one that involved Bowden talking with the Twins, A’s or Orioles to acquire their top starter that involved what we ended up getting in trade for Milledge. How this Milledge trade sets us up for a future trade for a quality starter is beyond my ability right now to see clearly.
By the way, if any of you are now somewhat expecting to grab a pitcher from Oakland or Baltimore, you should temper your expectations downward significantly. It did not hit me until after the Milledge trade that Beane will use our loss of Milledge as additional leverage against us in negotiations for any of his starting pitchers. And as for dealing with the Orioles, Andy Macphail is a fair man to deal with, but it is Peter Angelos who kills any deal that is offered to the team. So that means you can kiss an opportunity to acquire Bedard good-bye as well. With Santana going to the Yanks or Red Sox, that leaves very few “Aces” left on the market.
I guess that means a Colon signing becomes more a reality at this point. I’d rather that do that than trust we’ll get any significant value our of trading away Carlos Gomez at this point.
**Warning: sarcastic comment** —–>>>> Just imagine, the Marlins are refusing to trade Dontrelle Willis because they want to build up his value to them. Wow. What a concept. We should have taken a page from their playbook in regards to Milledge, you think ? I am no great fan of Milledge, but we should have gotten better value for him than we did. To not get any sort of pitching for trading him was just plain dumb.
You “follow” trade rumors…
Did you hear about this one? That’s what I thought.
No one on the outside, fans, media what have you “really” knows what’s going on in baseball, save a select few. But even they are wrong most of the time as it’s just buzz and speculation.
Funny thing about the future…it never gets here.
See: Isringhausen, Pulsipher, Jefferies, Hurdle
The two the Mets held on to: Straw and Doc — ultimately, sad wastes of talent.
Well, you also have to include Reyes, Wright and Heilman as talent the Mets held onto as well.
Todd Hundley, Bobby Jones. Sure, not world beaters, but useful players nonetheless.
Straw and Doc were two of the most exciting players the Mets have ever developed. Sure, they wasted a lot of their potential, but they also had good solid successful years for the Mets too. Just as importantly, both played integral roles in the Mets resurgence and ownership of NY in the mid-80’s. Why do you think King George then went after them way after their primes? So I would not have traded either for anything. I’m glad Cashen held on to them.
after which we lose another guy like flores off our 40 man. and for what? 3 or 4 disgusting starts by Fatass?
I see it this way: Glavine had 13 wins in 200 innings; Colon had 6 wins in 99 innings, most late in the season.
If he stays healthy, he may essentially replace Glavine’s innings and production. He’s fairly young (34) and would likely come cheap…and most probably slot in as a fifth starter.
IF they go out and get a Haren or Bedard, the staff looks pretty decent, but still probably no 17-20 game winner. Pencil in, for example:
Pedro (15 wins)
Haren/Bedard/Blanton (15 wins)
Maine (15 wins)
Perez (15 wins)
Colon (11 wins)
That’s 71 wins and in a typical season the bullpen gets you 25. Does 96 wins get them to the playoffs? Maybe.
If they don’t trade for Haren, etc. Pelfry gets the nod, and maybe he’s good for 10-12 wins. Does 91-93 wins get it done? Does Pelfry excel and overachieve?
Damned if I know. But it’s all a numbers game.
Also, they did let a nice chip go last season too cheaply–Brian Bannister. So I think they will be more careful this time around.
34 is NOT failrly young..
a 35 year old man who has elbow problems and is morbidly obese is NOT a good risk … The man is a physical wreck.. he’s breaking down..
he should be playing softball in a park somewhere huffing around second.
Glavine – while over 40, at least kept himself in some semblance of shape. this guy looks like he never passed by a burrito stand.
It’s all about the arm. See: David Wells
so if its all about the arm would you like to address his rotator cuff tear or his “sore” elbow?
All I can say is, they would need to know it’s sound–and not overpay.
we are not getting HAREN or Bedard
I actually think we have a good shot at Bedard.
Think about it. The Yanks and Sox are perennial contenders. The Blue Jays look solid this season and the Rays have upgraded their rotation and have an exciting young lineup.
The Orioles… uh… Bueller? They’re a mess. Now is the time for them to sell off their tradeable assets and try to rebuild. Bedard will land them the biggest score.
agree squad.. that may be the saving grace from this mess.
when the yanks or sox land johan the O’s might fold up their tents and start selling.
I think this would be a good pickup he will come cheap… and I would not count on him as an opening day rotation, but he could come out a be decent, especially moving back to the NL…. For a short term deal, that does not require any young talent in return, this is a good deal
instead of Colon why dont we look at Mark Prior. He wants a better deal then what the cubs are offering and the cubs are unwilling to do so. The Cubs would rather trade him then non tender him, but either way the Mets could get him. He is a young pitcher and will come cheap because of his history. All Prior needs is a little petterson magic.
Amateur….
Amateur….
Hey, at least we don’t have to get rid of Lee, Phillips and Sizemore for him.
Exactly–he lucked out on those deals, He was going after a couple of stiffs at the time. If he brings that pile of garbage colon in here, I am going to watch lacrosse games all summer. high reward from this bum? you have tobe kidding. lets start a pool and guess his weight coming in. I start at 290.
yeah.. maybe Omar will stay away so that the press doesn’t rehash that nightmare trade.
one can only hope./
I need to see more imagination from Omar at this point in his tenure. Basically reuniting the Montreal Expos and running them out there in Mets Uniforms just isn’t going to cut it. Not very inventive to resign all the guys you drafted or traded for YEARS ago.
I wondered how long it would be before someone threw out the la_tino card. So how do you rationalize Schneider and Young?
