…while the Yankees and Red Sox keep going back and forth, trying to outdo one another in an effort to acquire Twins LHP Johan Santana, i sense that the Mets are now pushing harder for O’s LHP Erik Bedard than A’s RHP Dan Haren or Joe Blanton…
According to a previous report in the Baltimore Sun, the Mets offered Aaron Heilman, Phillip Humber and Carlos Gomez to the Orioles for Bedard, but it was rejected.
However, in today’s Daily News, Roger Rubin writes that it was Lastings Milledge whom the Mets offered, not Gomez.
Rubin quotes a baseball official as saying…
“You put Ryan Church or Gomez in place of Milledge in an offer and it might be a more attractive offer.”
…the buzz from baltimore, though, is that the O’s don’t really want to trade bedard, and so he may cost a team more than the Twins get for Johan Santana…they are debating whether to trade him for talent that can help next season or keep him, allow more time for an extension and if it can’t work out they can always trade him next off-season, after which he will still be under control by his new team for one full season…
As of now, Santana and C.C. Sabathia are eligible to be free agents after next season, while Brad Penny and Jake Peavy are eligible during the off-season after that, as is Bedard.
…so, the time to trade him could be now, since so few quality pitchers are on the open market…
…the Dodgers have long been referenced as bedard’s most aggressive suitor, from whom baltimore will likely request OF Matt Kemp, RHP Jonathan Broxton and RHP Clayton Kershaw, which is a package the Mets cannot compete with…of course, the Dodgers may need many, if not all, of those prospects to get Miguel Cabrera from the Marlins, assuming those talks are still occurring…
Speaking of Cabrera, the Marlins left him off of their marketing materials for next season, writes the Palm Beach Post.

I will be more than content with Bedard. I like him better than Haren anyways. He’s a lefty and a strikeout pitcher.
Well don’t intend on being content anytime soon. These posts are bordering on the point of ridiculousness..
We’re not getting Santna, despite the 50 something posts on this site. We’re not getting Berdard, and we’re not getting Haren.
We juts watched this team tade away one of our most talented young players for nothing which fills a team need other then “defenisve” catcher.
Wake up people, the more you believe this complete nonesense, that Ryan Church is the missing piece of the puzzle, the less disapointed you’ll be watching the press conference welcoming Livan Hernandez to Shea.
what a loser
Omar has frustrated me this season. A lot. But for me, he’s earned the benefit of the doubt during his tenure here. Please Omar, justify my hopes and tell me we aren’t done yet.
If there were any player i want right now that is realistically obtainable without mortgaging the future, who also has the intangibles i feel we are missing now, it is Dontrelle Willis.
Please Omar, buy low, and bring the D-Train to Queens!
The Marlins aren’t dumb enough to sell low on Willis. They will still treat him as a Cy Young winner and demand a Santana cost. That’s just the reality of it.
That is so true
Why do you people assume that Omar is finished? The winter meetings haven’t even begun yet! Let the man make a move before you kill him. Millege was and is a bust prospect. His value dropped because of his actions off the field and his ability on it. Let see what Omar can do this week. Please remember we didn’t get Carlos Beltran til the middle of January. There is alot of time left to mold this team. He has done all the right things thus far such as bringing back Anderson and Eisley and Endy and obtaining a catcher and a decent outfielder who I might add has as much if not more value in trade then Millege in Church.
Go get em Omar!!!!
Let’s just say hypothetically that the yankees acquire santana and phil hughes is part of that package. If we threw everything at the twins for hughes the twins walk away with twice as many prospects for the price of santana. just a thought.
Yes, because Hughes is the staff ace we want for next year.
Why would we through everything at the Twins for Hughes?
Are you kidding? A staff ace? Do you honestly believe that any of our prospects can net one? Wake up man. No Bedard. No Haren. And you better believe no Santana. That would be about the best we could hope to do (and even that is not what I would even call likely) with our chips.
Based on what exactly do you say this?
The Dodgers are going after Haren/Blanton or Kuroda.
They aren’t trading Billingsley, Kershaw, Broxton, Saito, Martin or Loney.
They aren’t going to put together a real offer for a Bedard, especially with the D’Backs having interest in Haren.
The O’s rejected, according to the Daily News and Yahoo! Sports, a deal with Milledge, Heilman and Humber.
In Yahoo! Sports they said they’d take the deal if Milledge were replaced with Church or Gomez.
that is one of more ridiculous trade proposals i’ve heard yet. Throwing ALL of our prospects at another prospect. Do you honestly think Hughes is the answer to our pitching problems? That he could pitch over 200 innings next year? Ha.
you’re right. livan it is. good work. who needs good young pitchers with incredible upside when you have pelfrey, humber and a collection of young replaceable outfielders who don’t hit for power yet.
Ok, so we won’t win next year because we wont have the pitching, and then in 2-3 years when we start losing all of our veterans, we won’t have anything in the farm to supplement any of it, meaning we’ll sign more overaged veterans, meaning we won’t win then either. Great plan.
I didn’t realize we would stop drafting, signing free agents and trading with other teams for next 3 years after this deal. come back to earth. i really don’t think any of the players previously mentioned are really going drastically change the complexion of this team. ask the yankees who have signed free agents and trading their prospects for years and never seemed to keep them out of the playoffs. this is a big market team with a tremendous revenue stream. what you’re proposing will never happen in my opinion.
you’re the one who needs to come back to earth. Do you honestly believe trading away our farm for Phil Hughes is a good idea? You can’t put all your chips into one pot man, especially one that hasn’t even proven much of anything.
I’m interested if hes promoting Aaron Heilman the starter or Aaron Heilman the reliever.
The O’s had the worst relief pitching in baseball last year.
And the Mets also offered a young starter in Humber.
According to Yahoo! Sports the Mets offered Milledge, Heilman and Humber and that the O’s would do it if it had Gomez, Heilman and Humber.
I’d let the Mets offer Gomez, Heilman, Mulvey/Pelfrey/Guerra/Humber and Estrada for Bedard.
The O’s and Bedard aren’t agreeing on anything.
I’d also make a bet that Kershaw, who is better than Joba, goes nowhere. I think Kemp, Abreu and Elbert could be the ones available for trade, but that’s about it.
gomez, heilman, pelfrey guerra and estrada may get it done, but thats A LOT
“…Talk about a market collapse. The New York Daily News reported the New York Mets offered the now traded Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman and Phillip Humber to the Baltimore Orioles and that deal was rejected. The Daily News reported a baseball source said had the Mets offered either Carlos Gomez or Ryan Church it might have been accepted. The deal was most likely for Erik Bedard…”
Y! Sports.
Forgive me if I’m missing something, but if the deal for Bedard could have been done by replacing Milledge with Gomez, why didn’t Omar just replace Milledge with Gomez? Are we to believe that Gomez is so untouchable that he had to trade Milledge to get Church just to avoid trading Gomez?
But he also landed a defensive catcher in Schneider, in addition to flexibility in offering the O’s an outfielder.
Not to mention Omar said he wouldn’t make his power play until 12/3/07 at the earliest.
where’d you hear that?
He said he wouldn’t make a big splash before Winter Meetings.
I agree, I don’t think the report is at all accurate.
I’m assuming the name all these teams want a package centered around is martinez and I’m fine letting the kid go if we get back a pitcher or Bedard’s talent.
No one in the Mets minor league system should be untouchable.
The way they played in September, no one on the major league roster should be untouchable–including Reyes and Wright, if the deal is good. But that’s unlikely.
did you see the way wright played in september?
It’s a Twilight Zone winter concerning Lastings Milledge. He’s getting slammed by all these writers and anonymous baseball insiders as universally overhyped and valueless, as if he’s already been given a full couple years and 1000 major league plate appearances to prove his limited skills.
When a guy says Gomez in place of Milledge would be more atttractive, I just roll my eyes in bewilderment. But when the guy says Church in place of Milledge would be more attractive, then that’s just flat-out bizarro world unintelligent.
Church is the picture perfect definition of a formerly overhyped prospect who’s been given several years to prove his limited skills on the major league level. He’s been a handy platoon player who could mostly shift between leftfield and centerfield, and hit only against righties. He has limited baserunning skills and will strike out 100 times if given 450 plate appearances. He was a 25 year old major league rookie who’s approaching 30 now. He tops out at Xavier Nady production. How the hell is a 4th outfielder type (on a decent team) like Church considered to be a better trading chip than Milledge? That’s exactly the same kind of reasoning in saying that Zambrano was preferable to Kazmir. Just dumb dumb dumb dumb.
And if indeed the rest of the baseball world is bizarro and suddenly takes a blue chip like Milledge and treats him like a worthless penny stock. Then, for godsakes, you don’t sell low like that when he was a very necessary fulltime player for the team. There’s a reason why some organizations stay relatively consistently competitive, while others cluelessly fluctuate from buying frenzies to mock youth movements to some joke in between status and bounce up and down the standings each year.
All this talk about Santana. I’ve always liked Carlos, but I think Clapton and Jeff Beck are better guitarists.
just some comic relief–Emily Litella-like; for those who recall vintage SNL.
That song with Chad Kroeger was terrible.
If it took Hanley Ramirez to get Beckett and Ramirez is better than anyone on the Mets (majors and minors) and the Yankees are OFFERING Hughes and Cabrera for Santana, I see no way we get an ace.
I think if Santana goes to the Yanks you’ll see the Sox grab Bedard or Haren. Then the team that doesn’t trade a pitcher O’s or A’s holds their guy until the trading deadline.
What we’ve got is a “win now team” with 4 #3 pitchers and a hole at the back of the rotation.
I’ve calmed down a bit after the Milledge trade. I really liked Milledge. He seems like a bit of a bonehead but he had charisma and passion. I know the Mets seem to view passion as the 8th deadly sin and that may have doomed him. But I’ll just hope that trade becomes Omar’s Roberto Kelly for Paul O’Neil.
I think we have to prepare for a 4 year run here of limping in and out of the playoffs and then Omar getting fired.
The dynamic in baseball has changed over the past 6 years where you can no longer go out and sign huge free agents a la cart each year. Now you must develop players to use as trade chips and build in house pitching. The Mets haven’t shown the ability to do that and that has to change for them to compete at the elite level.
I doubt the Orioles would trade within their own division.
The Mets could give all of their top prospects. I would be in favor of doing that. The Mets overvalue and rush them. Might as well sell them high now and get Santana than stick with them only to have them burn out. NONE of the will EVER be the player like Santana is.
We’ve got another “win yesterday” team. The time to win it all was 2006. The 2007 team wasn’t a playoff team. Now it’s a mess. All the old expensive guys are just older and the brittle guys are still brittle and the manager’s the same bored guy and the pitching coach is the same hands in pocket guy and the GM has been further damaging the team with each new tweak for over 12 months now.
bedard for gomez/f mart, heilman, and humber would be a steal. just imagine his strikeout total switching over to the national league.
also, if we could somehow get daniel cabrera from the o’s and let peterson work his magic on him i think it would be perfect for the mets. he’s an early 90’s randy johnson in disguise..electric stuff but with no control i.e. the perfect minaya reclamation project.
I’d sooner include Guerra in a deal than Pelfrey or FMart — not that you mentioned Pelfrey.
of course..i would too, but if that’s what it takes to get a young left handed flamethrower who was top 5 in the al cy young award voting last year i’ll take it
Oakland’s willing to deal Hudson Street. He’d be nice in the pen.
At what cost?
No idea.
or Huston Street :)
I think Snell and Nady would be a nice haul for the Mets, an ideal fit actually. Snell certainly has the goods to breakout on a better team and is still only 26 years old. Nady rakes against lefties and would compliment Church well (if Church is still around), and also could spell Delgado and Alou when needed. As much as I like Snell, I’d be a bit concerned if he could handle the big stage of playing in NY. That’s why I think D-Train has the perfect makeup to flourish here, if the Mets can bring him aboard on a reasonable trade.
Omar will be judeged by what the product looks like on the field and it’s record next year.
I’m fine with most of his moves. He acquired Maine and Perez in deals. That’s not bad. He was not responsible for the Kazmir deal. The Milledge deal can be judged in hindsight not now.
Since it’s on Dec 2 i prefer to see if he can pull out something for our propects. However, it was crystal clear that Milledge was not that highly regarded. Gomez has some value but it ’s also clear the FMart has more and they should not deal him. He can be replacing Alou and be here for a very long time.
Gomez/Pelfrey/Humber/Carp for Haren or Bedard.
If they say no then you are done and I’m willing to give Pelfrey the 5 spot. He fails try Mulvey.
I think the Mets should trade Benny Agbayani, Dennis Cook, and Desi Relaford for Erik Bedard.
That’s quite a spider sense you’ve got their Matt. Let’s see, Mets have no chance to get Santana, so your sense is they will go after the other legite starters supposedly available.
These posts just get more and more redundant and inane.
Just make one post in the morning that says “Mets need pitching and Omar is running around like a chicken without a head desperately trying to unload second rate prospects for a stud.”
Lol. This website is great for information and links to other sites, but as far as “analysis” goes it’s pretty much irrelevant.
time for you guys to read the metsblog mission statement. matt never pretended to state he would be giving his analysis. if you’d like to try to do better, go ahead and start your own blog.
otherwise, read and let the grownups speak.
Ellsbury will be in a package per ESPN.
Says they won’t put in lester or Bucholz.
that will NOT get it done..
Clearly Boston is in a no lose situation. Their pitching is already way better than the Yanks.
Santan would end discussion about who plays the NL
Word is that the Marlins are only going to trade Cabrera, and not Dontrelle. I’m not as keen as I used to be on Dontrelle. I know the rationale that he’s been beaten down by the losing, but I’m not convinced that it’s the sole reason anymore. His stock has gone down I that should be reflected in any offers to the Marlins for him.
I still would prefer to make a strong “pitch” for Haren or Bedard before jumping on the “D-Train” sweepstakes.
All eyes on the man behind the curtain
The winter meeting mayhem officially underway, and with Minaya’s promise of a big move, its make or break time for the Mets and their GM.If he is unable to land an impact pitcher that would signal the beginning of the end of the IN OMAR WE TRUST era, and possibly his career with the Mets. Confidence in his abilities has now, more than ever, been brought into question with the Milledge deal and a very poor handling of catcher situation. The words amateur and desperate spring to mind regarding this offseason’s moves.
Of course the ultimate goal is a ring, the acquisition of an ace could very well bring the mets back to the NLCS and perhaps that coveted ring. Santana is a pipe dream, Haren has more teams interested than Santana which will drive his price up toward the outer atmos, and unless Jim Duquette become GM of the O’s I can’t see them trading Bedard, before Cabrera. Turn the tables, If Bedard were a Met, and the O’s had interest him we’d be asking for Roberts, Guthrie, Bradfford, and Cabrera and some first born sons at the least. Where has all the Carlos Silva chatter gone? With the big three out , Willis never really in, we’re left with Silva and a collection of Methuselahs. IN OMAR I STILL TRUST, however sentiments very well may not be similar this time next week
as much as i do love reyes and would hate to see him go i think a package headlined by reyes and gomez could bring back bedard and tejada…which def makes us a better team for the short term…tejada isnt what he used to be so its unrealistic for the orioles to think they can get a ton for him so i think you figure reyes and bedard cancel eachother out and then you could maybe do a gomez heilman and humber for tejada which come out to a reyes, gomez, heilman, humber for bedard and tejada…unrealistic, yes but you cant deny that this would put us in a better position to win now…and ofcourse heilman and humber can be interchangle among the other pitching prospects that we have.
it’s obvious that teams are down on milledge if the orioles rejected that trade. sure he’s got talent but a lot of baggage to go along with it as well.
i personally think that minaya made a good deal by getting church and schneider. teams are really high on church and hopefully minaya will trade him in a package for an ace pitcher (peavy?) who they haven’t really been linked to.
remember how we almost got oswalt 2 years ago? i’m thinking more along those lines
i think you’re being really unfair about omar. look at where we were before he got here and where we are now (last years collapse not withstanding). all this team needs is an ace or a really good #2 and we’ll be back in the playoffs.
trading away milledge and not resigning lo duca does not mean that our whole 2008 season is down the tubes. they are both really overrated and part of the reason why our clubhouse was crap last year.
think you’re being really unfair about omar. look at where we were before he got here and where we are now (last years collapse not withstanding)
I’m not sure why you decide to discount the collapse- the team played garbage baseball for 4 months prior to the “collapse”
Where were we before Omar got here? A laughingstock that hadn’t won jack,
Where are we now with Omar? A laughingstock that hasn’t won jack.
Fire Omar
Better!
