Buzz: The Marlins may Keep Dontrelle

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 10:32 am

According to MLB.com, citing ‘multiple sources,’ the Marlins are ‘still’ leaning towards keeping LHP Dontrelle Willis through at least next season’s trade deadline.

willis will certainly earn at least $7 million next season, via arbitration, before being eligible to be a free agent one year from now…

…the buzz from miami continues to biggest that the Marlins are confident that dontrelle will return to his old form, now that they have brought back his old pitching coach…so, if they’re truly confident, it makes sense to keep him, especially if they intend to trade Miguel Cabrera sooner than later…i mean, if he does well from April through July, the Marlins may be able to get more in a few months than they can get now, since he had such a poor year last season

again, like with Erik Bedard, Dan Haren, and others, the Marlins do not have to move willis, so if a team is willing to overpay, i.e., give up at least two to three pitching prospects, i’m sure they’ll act on it…otherwise, why bother
