Buzz: Dodgers Like, Like Andruw Jones
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 3, 2007 11:45 am

According to MLB.com, citing a ‘club official,’ the Dodgers have ‘stepped up talks’ with free-agent OF Andruw Jones, who is believed to be seeking a five-year, $90 million deal.

i keep getting e-mails referencing a report that suggested the Mets could go offer jones if Lastings Milledge got traded…the thing is, the Mets got Ryan Church for milledge, and, according to Omar Minaya, he sees church as his every-day, starting right fielder…i do not believe the Mets have much interest in jones, unless, maybe, he’d consider a one-year deal

…by the way, the early buzz from Nashville suggests that Aaron Rowand will likely sign a deal this week, as he continues to seek a five-year contract…once he is off the board, most people believe that jones may eventually sign for a deal between what rowand gets and what Torii Hunter got from the Angels, though i’ll believe that when i see it

Not sure I’d touch Jones, but obviously when Ryan Church is your starting RF, you have to consider that… But even if us Mets fans wanted Jones (or any other high priced player)…Freddie Coupons would not be interested. He wants to keep the payroll right where it is- an embarassing 95 million…which will end up being 35% of the NYY Payroll and a little more than half of Boston’s. Act like a big market team Freddie Coupons..for once in your life.

Coupon buying out Doubleday was bad news for Mets fans.

      • BaltimoreMets says:

You guys are absolutely amazing – the Mets had the third highest payroll in the league last year. Wilpon has spent millions upon millions of dollars on this team over the last few seasons. Don’t you remember when he gave Pedro his 4th year, or gave Beltran a monster contract, or took on Delgado’s 16 mil per for 3 years, or Wagner’s 40+ mil, etc. etc.

I mean, just going out and spending money for the sake of spending money is simply outrageous. Do you really want to give Jones 18 mil a year for 5 years after he came off an absolutely awful season? Is that going to take us over the top? Furthermore, do you think that the Mets wouldn’t be at the top of the list if Santana/Haren/Bedard were actually free agents?

The idea of the Fred Wilpon acting like some small market owner is laughable at best.

        • kevin2elster21 says:

Well, just off the top of my head, Coupon chose not to go after Vlad, so we had to overpay to get Beltran.

His past mistakes cause him to pay more than he should later. Not saying, he doesn’t spend money. Just not enough and not at the right moments.

        • VCarver says:

They spend roughly the same as the Red Sox. What more do you want? If they spent like the Yankees they’d be just another NY disgrace.

        • rd says:

Pretty disgraceful if you ask me that the team with the third highest payroll in baseball didn’t even make the playoffs…….

    • VCarver says:

LOL, the Mets payroll was roughly $115 million in 2007 but their Luxury Tax payroll was roughly $143 million (with benefits) which was not too far off the Red Sox.

What’s embarrassing — or rather I should say sad — is how you continue to insist on posting made up incorrect numbers for the Mets spending even after other fans keep correcting you. You did it when you called yourself Mr. Met and you continue to do so.

      Keep up the lies.

  2. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

even though the phillies will get some nice draft compensation for rowand ill be happy when he signs elsewhere. assuming rollins doesnt have another career year + rowands absence means their offense (their greatest strength) could take a step back. anything to help our chances.

  3. kevin2elster21 says:

Why is Torii worth more than Andruw?

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i guess bc torii hunter doesnt have a severe weight issue and will hopefully bat over 220.

      • kevin2elster21 says:

Ehh, that 220 was an anomaly. Andruw has more power potential and though he strikes out a ton, Torri’s not too far behind.

btw, I don’t want to sign Andruw, I’m just saying he should get at least as much as Torii.

  4. Two-By-Four says:

Let’s not forget that an inspection of Church’s splits reveals he has great difficulty hitting left hand pitching and at his age you have to wonder just how much improvement you can expect from him. By mid-season we may be crying for someone to platoon with him and if the Mets trade Gomez for a starting pitcher I wonder who the platoon player will be.

  5. firemetmanagement says:

3rd highest payroll is still embarrassing when it is 150 million less than the NYY and 80 million less than the Red Sox. Even when Freddie Coupons addes Martinez, Beltran, Wagner, etc.- they shed a lot of other payroll to make it a wash. This team’s payroll has not significantly increased over the past 4-5 years. Last year, it was only 110 million…and after shedding Green, LoDuca, Glavine ,etc…it’s down around 95 million.

Unacceptable. This team has limitless revenue streams w/ the new tv network, Citifield, naming rights, 3.5 million in gates, etc., increased ticket prices (through the roof).

No reason this payroll can’t be in the 140-160 million range.

But Freddie Coupons will always be Freddie Coupons.

And yes it’s too bad Doubleday didn’t get the team. WE’d have ARod, Guerrero, etc….and a payroll that rivaled the NYY and Boston…it definitely would not be the pathetic 95 million that it is now. That’s barely more than Atlanta, who has theirs around 85-90. Embarrassing. I hate Freddie Coupons.

  6. firemetmanagement says:

The real Mets fans know that they always have been and always will be cheap. The ones who don’t think so are either drinking the Koolaid or part of the Wilpon family.

    • kevin2elster21 says:

      Seriously.

If you’re not miserable or pessimistic, you’re not an informed Mets fan.

Remember Piazza? Coupon wanted no part in signing him. Doubleday had to force the issue.

  7. metsrbest says:

I’d love to see the Mets make a play for Rowand. I think in many ways he was the true MVP of the Phillies, not Rollins. And Met…i’m a real Met fan and they are not cheap. Stupid maybe…but not cheap.

    • kevin2elster21 says:

They’re stupid and cheap. Rowand? Hmmm, not much of a hitter, but he can bring the grit that the Mets sorely lack.

Even Pedro? What happened to him? He used to be intimidating on the mound. Now he’s this love-able nice guy.

  8. TG1 says:

i agree. its not so much minayas fault. teams always follow the ownership on down. if we could have a higher payrool we would have signed a-rod and could have traded reyes for santana. now i no most do not want to trade reyes but NO ONE on this forum can tell me they would rather have reyes than a-rod and santana.

  9. firemetmanagement says:

3rd highest payroll is not enough when #1 is approaching 250 million (NYY), #2 is approaching $200 million (Boston)…and the Mets is 95 million. Actually it’s not true that they have the 3rd highest payroll anymore. In ‘07 the MEts had a payroll around 115 million, which was 3rd highest…since then they’ve cut the payroll to around 95 million..and thus now it’s probably about the ~10th highest in MLB. How embarassing. I hate Freddie Coupons. Sell the team to Mark Cuban or Donald Trump, I beg you. Hell let Jim Dolan buy it- he’s a mor*n but at least he’s not afraid to spend.

By the way I think it’s a joke that the word “Lat*n” gets filtered out and your post gets deleted for typing that. You should be embarassed/ashamed of yourself Cerrone. Grow up.

That is bush league and shameful.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

So you would rather that the current Mets be MORE LIKE the current Knicks? THAT is bush league and shameful!

      • kevin2elster21 says:

what he leaves out of his argument is spend more and spend wisely. spending tons covers up a lot of mistakes (yanks).

The knicks/baseketball is another beast altogether. with their contract structure and the fact that there are only a handful of impact players, you can’t really compare the nba with mlb.

  10. firemetmanagement says:

Sure I’d love Rowand too- would be an upgrade of our lousy 500,000 dollar outfielder we have out there…But the Wilpons want to go cheap at that position, because they are cheapskates. 12-14 million for Rowand would be too rich for them…even though that would only bring the payroll up to like 110 million! So cheap.

  11. firemetmanagement says:

By lousy 500,000 dollar OFer I mean Church. What a joke.

  12. firemetmanagement says:

What’s been more painful/embarassing/frustrating than the collapse is what’s happened since (or lack thereof). Nobody was fired or held accountable for collapse (Randolph should have been gone)..and now Minaya sits around and twiddles his thumbs…just “talks” about wanting big players, but gets none. Trades milledge for cr*p…downgrades RF as well as Catcher..attempts to sign Torrealba..the list goes on. Fire him, Fire Randolph, fire the Wilpons.

    • kevin2elster21 says:

      fmm,

your posts are a bit too caustic, esp for the frail minded here. but you make some pretty good points.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

except regarding downgrading at the catcher position, unless the only qualities you judge by are batting average and abiltiy to get thrown out of games for arguing.

        • metsrule7 says:

Everyone always looks at the offensive side of a catcher but how many starting catchers in this league hit 300? Anything you get out of your catcher offensively is a bonus, Schneider is a great defensive catcher so if he’s able to keep runners from stealing bases so teams have to get 2 hits to score a run instead on just 1 than he is saving more runs than any catcher we get could hit in. How many times did someone get a base hit steal second because Lo Duca couldn’t throw him out and then the next batter got a hit to score him?

  13. robmenna says:

After this week I see Omar making a deal for Kevin Millwood and not any of the big names (Bedard Haren Santana).

  14. VCarver says:

In case anyone is buying into the fictitious numbers of “firemetmanagement” (aka Mr. Met), the Mets payroll in 2007 was roughly $117M but their LT Payroll was roughly $143M which was roughly the same as Boston’s. .

Mr. Met would have you believe all sorts of fantasy numbers … I think it’s clear he flunked math.

The Wilpons may not be the smartest businesspeople. But they are not cheap and spend a lot.

  15. firemetmanagement says:

    Freddie Coupons

  16. firemetmanagement says:

143 million my behind!! And CURRENTLY the MEts payroll is ~95 million…maybe 100 tops…after all the salary they shed this offseason.

  17. VCarver says:

Yes. Their LT payroll for 2007 is roughly $143 million. Their regular payroll was $117M.

Their current (as of today) LT payroll is roughly around $117M (including considerations for arb-eligible players). But the signings and arb settlements aren’t even over. For anyone to use off-season numbers BEFORE the team is even set is totally illogical. But I don’t expect anything different from you.
