Buzz: Nationals may soon get Elijah Dukes
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 3, 2007 2:41 pm

According to the St. Petersburg Times, ‘the buzz at the winter meetings this afternoon’ is that the Rays will soon trade OF Elijah Dukes to the Nationals.

For what it’s worth, the Nationals and Rays have a press conference scheduled for 5 pm.

Additionally, MLB.com is writing that the Devil Rays have been shopping RHP Edwin Jackson, who is drawing interest from the the Mariners.

jackson is 24, a fallen prospect with a quick arm who arbitration eligible this off season…

In a report for the New York Post in early November, Mark Hale wrote that the Mets had talked to the Rays during the GM Meetings, but not about LHP Scott Kazmir.

Update3:40 pm

In a post to his blog for the Washington Post, Barry Svrluga says that Dukes will get sent to DC for essentially nothing, as the Rays are simply trying to clear a roster spot.

Update4:03 pm

At FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes that the deal is official, swapping Dukes for a minor-league player to be named later.

Watch out for the Nationals and Rays in a couple of years. They both seem to finally have gotten a good idea of where they’re headed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Rauch for Dukes

Wow…press conferences at 5PM for the Nats and Rays. Think I’ll be able to see that one on YouTube? Maybe they are announcing they are folding?

    I’d rather watch paint dry.

“…but not about LHP Scott Kazmir.”

    Why the heck not?

  8. ExileInLA says:

Maybe the Nats will sign Jose Guillen too… they can have the most out of control OF in MLB: Dukes - Milledge - Guillen.

    • the_other_matt says:

Fans in the outfield would have to be supplied with flack jackets.

      • metsdude13 says:

And we wonder why the number of african americans in this league is dwindling? This league is against blacks. If you’re black, and you act black, you get a bad reputation. It’s sickening. What exactly did Milledge ever do that was so bad?

      • kevin2elster21 says:

        flak jacket . . . hahahaha

  9. Alban says:

It would be awesome if Milledge and Dukes became the bash brothers of the Nationals.

I love my Mets, but I’m still bitter over losing Milledge. I’ve been cheering for him since I got to watch him play in Binghamton, and it’s going to be hard to let him go.

    • metsdude13 says:

Agree. I’m sick of tired of people complaining about guys attitudes. This league needs a little attitude.

Ty Cobb was an ***. So was Pete Rose.

      Who cares?

      • christian warrior says:

Rose and Cobb didn’t have attitudes. They were criminals.

Rose was betting on his own team, and Cobb was a rapist for God’s sake.

        And you ask “Who cares?”

        Milledge might, for one.

        Bad comparison on your part.

  10. the_other_matt says:

Maybe Milledge was traded because Peterson can fix catchers now too?

  11. ScottN says:

Milledge and Dukes do make sense for DC. Young, talented African American potential stars for a heavily African American city. May not work out for one or both, but if they do, it could be a great foundation for the Nats.

  12. Deaner says:

DC goin for the thugged outfield. Logan, Dukes, Milledge. Maybe a rap album can generate some extra money for the team.

And how does someone act black? That seems a bit ridiculous. Why not just act like a normal human athlete?

    • metsdude13 says:

Black baseball players who do things similar to their counterparts in the NFL and NBA get vilified for them. Having an attitude, making a rap album. African Americans choose not to play baseball because they can’t be themselves there. They’d rather go to the NBA or NFl where they are more accepted.

      • cyclone says:

No, they go the NFL and NBA where the quick money is. In baseball, you have to work your way up to make the big money. Why do that when you can get a mega contract out of college by putting a ball through a hoop?

      • the_other_matt says:

congratulations on the “Most Dumbest” post of the day.

  13. gomets2008 says:

What about Pena….he is awesome…..I wish we could get him.

    • ScottN says:

Logan is going to become their Endy Chavez. Pena, Dukes, Milledge. It’s a gamble, but with Zimmerman, Meat Hook/Nick Johnson, Belliard for the #2 hole, the Nats lineup goes from extremely suspect overall to having the potential to be a real surprise for folks in ‘08. They don’t have the pitching to keep up (and I’m sure they will fall apart completely without Schneider as catcher…not), but I have to say I’m pretty impressed with these moves by the Nats.

I would say it’s important to keep Dukes at arms length from the DC club scene–could be a volatile mix given his history.

  14. terpz06 says:

dukes has a longer rap sheet than milledge’s. they should make a nice tandem - too bad they missed out on delmon young. just kidding, of course. i miss milledge already and will for some time. and dukes has some talent too

  15. firemetmanagement says:

Mets can use Dukes. They need an offensive upgrade in RF. But Mets won’t touch bad character guys. Very stupid on the Wilpons fault…Last I checked, the ‘86 MEts were pretty good. mor*ns.

    • coldentoshea76 says:

Dukes’s issues aren’t simply “bad character” ones. It’s not like he just has an attitude in the clubhouse or something- he’s been arrested repeatedly for battery, domestic assault, drug possession, obstructing a police officer, etc. He’s a criminally violent guy who’s not legally permitted near his wife and kids. Who exactly on the ‘86 team are you comparing him to?

      • metsdude13 says:

the half of the team on coke?

        • coldentoshea76 says:

And exactly which one of those coke addicts was also arrested over half a dozen times for violent crimes by the age of 22?

        • metinDC23 says:

theres a difference between partying too much and domestic abuse

      • terpz06 says:

elijah dukes sounds like the next darryl strawberry. except he’s accomplished much more than straw at a younger age (off the field, that is)

  16. robmenna says:

It is rumored that the Devil Rays are interested in a veteran First Baseman. Oh how I would love to dump Delgado in that dump of a stadium in Tampa

  17. HeBeGB says:

I believe Dukes is up to 6 kids with 5 different women.

Washington should insist that Tampa Bay include a case of condoms.

  18. ScottN says:

Wow, I understand what the DRays are doing considering this kid’s horrible history, but this could end up being huge for the Nats if this kid gets his life together. Great potential story for the Nats, and likely the right thing to do for the DRays, who I am sure are tired of his antics.

But to get this kid for essentially nothing? Wow.
