Buzz: Nats want Weeks for Chad Cordero
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 3, 2007 11:07 am

The Nationals continue to request 2B Rickie Weeks from the Brewers in talks involving RHP Chad Cordero, ‘but the Brewers keep saying no,’ writes Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com.

…which may explain why cordero could not be part of the Lastings Milledge to deal

…if you recall, during last year’s trade deadline, the word from d.c. had been that the Mets offered Philip Humber to the Nationals in exchange for cordero, who literally had his bags packed, but the Mets would not part with either OF Carlos Gomez, OF Fernando Martinez or RHP Mike Pelfrey to get a deal done

When asked during last August whether the Mets should have traded Humber plus Gomez, Milledge or Martinez to get Cordero, 90 percent of respondents said, ‘No.’

    This is hilarious

  2. pezao says:

I’d rather have Rauch than Cordero any day anyway….

  3. poonjabee says:

here’s an idea…and it certainly won’t cost the farm…call the pirates and see what they want for nady (won’t be non-tendered) & either Duke or Snell? We clearly don’t have the bullets to get the established ace we all crave…but we do however have the ability to try to obtain a young controllable arm w/ potential that we can groom…it is clear that our team is not in terrible shape like all you “sinking ship” people, but seriously, aim for the stars and accept the lesser deals that can work out long term…we have to be responsible to our team’s future as well as its present…too bad milledge is gone (yes I hated that deal), but a package of church, heilman and humber should possibly get that done…thoughts?

    • napes22 says:

We don’t want Duke. He is not that good of a pitcher. Snell is another story. Why not push for Gorzellany or Snell? Go after a team that has a young controllable pitcher but isn’t a contender. Why not go for Lowry on SF – someone that will give us innings.

We aren’t going to get our Ace this offseason and we need to face that fact.

  4. napes22 says:

That’s because Cordero isn’t all that good.

Rauch is of much more value.

  5. extrawhitemeat says:

Bowden always asks for the moon.. this is the same guy that let Soriano walk for a draft pick…

To bad only Omar actually gives it too him.

    • landyg21 says:

That was the best offer he got without having to pay any of his salary. Hey, David Wright was picked because of Mike Hampton going to Colorado. Draft picks are a good thing to get.

    • extrawhitemeat says:

One draft pick vs 3 or 4 good young players?

That was a big gaffe.. come on now.

      • landyg21 says:

3 or 4 young players that he wasn’t going to get. No one was taking the money and going to give you four prospects. I never knew prospects were a sure thing. I guess Kevin Mass was a superstar for the Yankees after one month.

  6. landyg21 says:

Can these small market teams stop asking for a ridiculus amount of prospects already. It’s almost impossible to get anything done with Tampa, Oakland, and the Orioles. They just want a steal. Pay some money and keep your stars, you might contend and have fans in your stadiums.

  7. gregf1106 says:

poon, i agree we need to be more responsible but how responsible will omar be knowing he doesnt have a new deal in place with the team???? I hope he keeps his head screwed on stright and the “team” doesnt allow any really really stupid deals to occur. I think the Milledge trade gives them a starting catcher and a outfielder who has the same production but is more polished and will be more of a teamate. I think Church falls into the category of a balls to the wall player.

  8. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i hope omar is focusing on other things other than santana bedard and haren bc like it was mentioned above a guy like ian snell would be an upgrade if added to our current rotation. marte and snell both fill needs and i think they can be had for what we have as opposed to the pipedreams of these “aces” being shopped around.

    • kevin2elster21 says:

Omar goes through all the available pitchers and filters out any pitchers w/o the letter Z in their last name.

  9. Steinhardt says:

Why do you think Pittsburgh would give up on guys like that.
They have control of them for years to come and they’re cheap…

I’m all for improving our team but we shouldnt expect a steal

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

im not saying trade some low A ball prospects for them. im saying our chips wont net an ace but they can certainly net us a guy like snell who is a 2/3 guy. and snell is just an example im not saying you must get him but someone in that realm. lowry is another example. guys liek that wont be josh beckett-esque but adding someone like that to the current rotation certainly is a big upgrade it gives you 4 solid guys who will give you a chance to win then you can sign the silva/colon/livans of the world to pitch in the 5 hole and simply do better than the 3 or so wins we got from that spot last year.

  10. terpz06 says:

i saw several nats games at rfk when i went to school in maryland (go terps) and i don’t think cordero had an easy, shutdown save in any of them

    • kevin2elster21 says:

      Sounds like every closer.

      • Mister Koo says:

But it’s different with Cordero. He struggles because his stuff just isn’t any good anymore. Watching him pitch against the Mets last season, his fastball was 90-91 and was straight as an arrow. He relies on luck more than anything else.

  11. poonjabee says:

ah yes, Marte…we could offer something else too…Gorzellany is going nowhere I am sure but Snell should be able to be had…all this talk of the Pirates geeling like they were getting fleeced by us for Ollie is crazy…they have a new GM and they sent him to the minors 1st, we just tried to ask for him after he fell out of favor w/ the pirates altogether…I am all for Snell or Duke (see Ollie), Marte and Nady for Church, Humber, Heliman and maybe Carp?

  12. nyfh1234 says:

    ahhhh the scott kazmir effect

  13. christian warrior says:

    Kudos to the Brewers.

No way I give up Weeks for Cordero. The Nats must think that just because Cordero’s weight keeps going up, so does his trade value.

  14. Metsrmylife says:

Bottom line we arent getting an ace. What could be absolutely intrigueing would be a package of F-Mart, Heilman, Church and/or Mulvey/Humber (not both) for Gorzelanny, Snell, Nady, Marte and since there are reports that they want to unload Bay’s contract for a position prospect (That’s F-Mart) and pitching prospect (That’s Mulvey or Humber) you could net bay whose wrapped up for a couple more years who can work this season at either first or the corner outfielder spots. If you can’t not a problem, but now you have; a) a familiar fan favorite veteran in right with Nady (who will give you the similar offensive numbers as Church but with more pop, but less defense) and can platoon with the budding Carlos Gomez if you’d like, b) bullpen help in Marte, who is regarded as a hot commodity by the Yankees and other teams, adds a solid arm in the pen which would replace the whole by Heilman who in the last couple months of the season started earning the nick name “Homerun Heilman” (plus he’ll wind up being used as a stsrter anyway for Pittsburgh. And of course c) the pick up of two young guns in Ian Snell and Tom Gorzellany who are two young pitchers in the simmilar form Maine and Perez were early on. With the tutelage of Peterson and the better offensive numbers the Mets put up than Pittsburgh you can almost gaurantee that each will at least one or two more wins (Making Gorzy have a projected win outcome of at least 16 and Snell at least 11). Our new rotation Now Consists of as follows:

    Pedro
    Maine
    Ollie
    Gorzy
    Snell
*El Duque (if they decide to go witha six man rotation)

The beauty of this is the shear fact that if Snell does not pan out as a starter, you could easily switch to a reliable veteran in El Duque, or give Pelfrey another shot in the rotation. All in all you got a nice young rotation under the tutelage of Rick Peterson and a helping hand of Pedro Martinez. Meanwhile our starting lineup is now as follows:

    Reyes
    Castillo
    Wright
    Beltran
    Delgado/Bay
    Alou/Bay
    Nady/Gomez
    Schneider/Castro

Pittsburgh will be able to trade Bay who granted had a very bad year in Pittsburgh yesterday and can now be only traded for a cheaper price, which they don’t want to do, for he gets lost with the big prospect name of F-Mart and Humber/Mulvey. On the days both Delgado and Moises start he will just add depth to our already stellar bench. So in all the Trade looks as follows:

    PIRATES GET:
    OF Fernando Martinez
    OF Ryan Church
    RHP Aaron Heilman
RHP Kevin Mulvey and/or RHP Phillip Humber

    METS GET:
    LHP Tom Gorzelanny
    RHP Ian Snell
    OF Xavier Nady
    LHP Demaso Marte
    OF Jason Bay

And don’t even try to say they won’t do it because of the money we’d have to eat. Money is not an issue with this team. No ace, but promising youngsters and some pop. What do you think of that?

    • PDubs says:

Bay, Gorzelanny AND Snell for that Mets crap-bouquette you just threw together???

The Pirates wouldn’t trade one of those guys for those Mets players, nevermind three!

      • Metsrmylife says:

Lol, i don’t think its a “crap-bouquette” I mean they want to get rid of Bay and Nady, thats a fact, they need good prospects in return, that’s F-Mart and Mulvey/Humber, they’ll need a played to play this season in the outfield who is some-what proven that’s Church, and Heilman is regarded nicely by the A’s, Twins, and Orioles and gives them the RP They are losing in Marte or to fill the whole left from the loss of Gorzelanny and Snell. It’s not too bad and really not a “crap-bouquette”, but to each his own.

  15. landyg21 says:

Fernando Martinez is not going anywhere, get it through your heads people. The kid is 18 in AA ball and performing. He’ll play AAA this year at 19. Expect a move to first base for him soon and when Citifield opens up expect him on the roster. The kid is a superstar in the making.

  16. cver says:

If Bowden was so over the moon for Lastings that he gave up two of his “star players” for him, why wouldn’t throwing him in with Humber have brought back Cordero? I’m actually wondering about this, as I’m stewing at the thought of how bad things have gone as part of “Om*r’s plan”.
