Buzz: Santana, Back up for Grabs
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 3, 2007 9:55 pm

the word from Nashville, from a few different corners, suggests that the Twins are once again contacting teams, other than the Yankees and Red Sox, to discuss offers for Johan Santana

…it is sounding to me like a trade with either boston or the bronx may have been close, and ready to be announced tonight, but now it temporarily is off the table…

…additionally, from what i can gather, santana would rather play for the Red Sox, followed by the Mets, then the Yankees, but, still, the Mets may lack the necessary talent to pull off a deal…that being said, if the Twins are moving beyond the Red Sox and Yankees, who knows, maybe the Mets can find a way to squeak back in to this

Interestingly, according to Amy Nelson from ESPN.com, Santana’s agent, Yankees GM Brian Cashman and Mets GM Omar Minaya were all on the same flight from New York to Nashville today.

Update10:47 pm

According to Pete Abraham from the Journal News, the Yankees and Twins are meeting tonight.

Abraham writes, “It could be a long night. I’ll keep you posted once something happens.”

Update11:20 pm

The Yankees are once again ‘making noise’ that they might pull out of talks regarding Santana, writes Jayson Stark at ESPN.com.

Appearing on ESPN’s Winter Meetings Special, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney made a similar statement to Stark’s.

based on what i initially wrote in this post, coupled with stark’s report, among other new insight, i am getting the sense that the Twins, Red Sox and Yankees are all getting cold feet…and, frankly, if the Mets are not a player in this, i would love to see the Twins hang on to the guy, which could be a far more realistic option right now than we realize

Matt-What gives you the impression it’s Sox, Mets, then Yanks? I’m a little surprised at that.

      Priceless!

My grifriend’s hot friends don’t tease me this much!

      • bonatom says:

        Hilarious comment.. ibleedblueandorange…
Thourghly teased….. Matt Cerrone… stop teaseing us… Santana.. is still up for grabs…stop….stop it

  3. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Hey. Who wouldnt take Santana? However if we need to start thinking about Reyes then forget it. I am optimistic we may get Bedard who may be a better choice only because we dont have to include Reyes. If Maine or Perez are involved in any discussions I would be hesitant if I were Omar but for Santana or Bedard you have to seriously consider dealing them.

  4. firemetmanagement says:

Well this would seem to corroborate the Bedard report, because maybe other teams are now re-focusing on Santana and that is taking some focus away from Bedard and thus maybe (hopefully) MInaya acted swiftly? So hard to say..so much rumor and innuendo out there

  5. taestee says:

THE ENDLESS SPECULATIOn!!! Make it STOP!!!

  6. domosnacks5 says:

all i want for christmas is Erik Bedard.

  7. landyg21 says:

It’s funny how all the small market teams complain about the Yankees, but continue to send them their best players year after year.

  8. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

    Sqweak away, Omar!

  9. throatneedle says:

three words matt : LET IT GO

  10. landyg21 says:

People, don’t go crazy for Bedard, remember all the Mets fans who wanted to trade the farm for Buerhle last year. Great 9-10 season he had this year

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I was anti-Buerhle and and am pro-Bedard, just so you know.

And by the way Buerhle did pretty well.

  11. itsmetsforme says:

can i get a three way?

  12. firemetmanagement says:

Buehrle is not in Bedard’s class. Buehrle averages about 4.5 K/9 and Bedard averages about 10.5 K/9. Buehrle is not in the same league. Don’t compare him to Bedard.

    • landyg21 says:

Look I’m not comparing, just certain people are making him to be better then Sandy Koufax. The kid had 2 good seasons and 2 bad ones. Just look at Ollie to see how things can change from one year to another.

    • pifman says:

Bedard had one season where he had more Ks than innings, I believe you are jumping the gun a bit. Besides the fact that strikeout don’t make you an ace. Look at Ed Walsh for example, career ERA of 1.82, nearly 3,000 IP and around 1750 Ks. They are a flashy stat, but a pitcher doesn’t need to have them to be good.

      • gomets6091 says:

WHOA WHOA WHOA….let’s not start comparing modern pitchers to deadball pitchers here. NOBODY struck out a lot of batters during the deadball era: Walter Johnson, who was BY FAR the best strikeout pitcher of the time, struck out 3509 batters in 5914 innings, or 5.3K/9IP. By comparison, Greg Maddux, who has never been considered a strikeout pitcher, has 3273 in 4814 innings, or 6.1K/9IP, a significantly better ratio when you consider that Greg Maddux has one of the worst K rates of any post-World War II hall-of-famers (or future HOFers)

The fact is, in modern baseball, strikeouts ARE important. True, pitchers CAN be successful without them, but it is usually only for a short period of time, or if they have otherworldly control like Maddux. Strikeouts don’t make an ace, but almost every ace has a lot of strikeouts.

  13. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

    SQWEAK SQWEAK SQWEAK SQWEAK SQWEAK!

  14. rolson2386 says:

we’re in the nl east, not the al east, fix the bullpen

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

If we get Bedard and keep Pelf we could move El Duque to the Pen. Even if it costs Heilman, he isn’t going to be a Met after 2008 anyway.

Hernandez, Sosa, Smith, Sanchez, Feliciano, Schoeneweis Wagner.

I’d even take Dotel if Bob Barker says so.

  15. pifman says:

And here we go again… honestly I am Santana’d out at this point. If we get him great, if we don’t that’s nothing new, or is it?

    • domosnacks5 says:

I’m over Johan, I’ve moved on and have pitched a tent in Bedard’s direction. You figure it out

  16. whoamar says:

yeah, well, duh, the twins saw everyone backing off santan the elder statemen of the group and wanted to see who would up the ante. these minnows are not the dumb dumbs you think..

while the twins give everyone else the teaser-call….
omar needs to finalize a bedard deal, with roberts, without giving up ollie or maine. the Ofs can go if need be except for martinez,

  17. BSMITTYFDNY says:

We are not getting him. There is no way at this point unless we deal Reyes and we wont. Might turn out to be a blessing anyway. He is 29 and decling every year the past few years. We would have to give him a ton of cash, and give them our franchise SS. Then who knows he may blow out his arm and where are we then? I love the idea of getting Bedard who we would control for 2 more years and is a great K pitcher. He also wont cost Reyes.

  18. landyg21 says:

Can we start a new rumor, like Lackey to the Mets for Gomez, Gotay, and Mulvey. I agree with being Santana’d out already along with Bedard.

  19. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Well we should find out the status of everything at 11 be cause ESPN2 they will have a Winter Meetings Special.

    • landyg21 says:

where the hell is Kevin Burkhardt when you need him.

      • whoamar says:

today at 7pm…Pedro Martinez spends 30 minutes talking to Kevin Burkhardt while in the Dominican Republic

The flight should be landing in nashville soon. maybe he is on the plane with pedro who is going to talk with johan

    • therealsandman says:

should be interesting, if they bring up that bedard rumor and confirm it i will be a very happy met fan going 2 sleep

  20. innaword says:

Hey…how did Jose Lima do in the Mexican League last season?

  21. VCarver says:

Interesting. I’ve always gotten the sense Santana was extremely receptive to playing for the Mets because:

    1) He gets to pitch to easier NL lineups in a pitchers park
    2) He knows the Wilpons and Omar are committed to winning (even if they make questionable moves) and are willing to spend a lot (yes, that’s right, Mr. Met).
    3) He is friendly with both Reyes and Castillo, and Castillo having re-signed with the Mets is a big draw (and perhaps Castillo has made calls to his friend trying to sell him on the Mets … AFAIK, it’s not tampering for players to speak with other players)
    4) His agent enjoys a long and good relationship with the Mets and I’m sure he’s also tried to sell Santana on the idea of playing for them
    5) He has told people he would like to play in NY
    6) He is building a home in Florida and would probably like to stay close to it on the east coast
    7) Maybe pitching on a staff with Pedro is a big lure too. Maybe Pedro can teach him some things from his bag of tricks that will help Santana extend his elite status longer into his career.
    8) Rick Peterson has a good rep for a pitching coach

Maybe ultimately the Mets don’t have the pieces to get it done. If so I can only hope neither of the other teams do either, leaving Santana available later on next year in a scaled down deal or as a free agent next November.

That flight to TN must have been fascinating. I wonder if the two teams’ staffs were falling over themselves trying to get face time with Peter Greenberg, or maybe he just wanted to take a nap, lol.

    • pifman says:

But you know if Santana really does want to go to the Mets, he has a full no-trade clause right? He tells the Twins either trade me to the Mets or not at all. Then the Mets just have to decide do they try and convince the Twins to take a poor deal for Santana or even a good one or do they wait it out for him to be a free agent and lose the draft picks. However, I don’t think Santana wants to play on the Mets quite to that extreme so it seems unlikely such circumstances would occur.

      • VCarver says:

I don’t think Santana has the Mets solely on his wishlist and I never said he did. I feel he has maybe 3-4 teams max that he would sign with right away, and I think the Mets are one of them. So he wouldn’t exclude other teams. But that’s also why he and his agent were angry that some reports this morning incorrectly said that he would ONLY go to the Red Sox and Yankees. From his perspective that isn’t so.

      • VCarver says:

BTW, I also read that Santana is very friendly with David Ortiz. Combined with the Red Sox recent success, this makes sense that the Red Sox may be #1 on his list as Matt suggested.

  22. metfan24 says:

how about this trade no one has suggested: a top ace for carlos delgado and philip humber and deolis guerra, trade bengie molina for a decent catcher prospect, then for first base miguel cabrera for mike pelfrey, fernanado martinez, carlos gomez, and the catcher prospect

  23. innaword says:

Interesting article here about possible Yankees’ tampering. Maybe Hank shot himself in the foot:

    http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/12/03/does-hank-steinbrenner-understand-the-concept-of-tampering/

  24. VCarver says:

And forget about asking Matt to give it up. Why should he? Do any of you realize how much traffic has come to this site today? As of right now, he’s had 140,783 visits just today. That’s almost three times the amount for an average day. Matt’s bread is buttered by mouse clicks. And he’s giving out legit buzz/rumors. Doesn’t matter if some don’t pan out. As long as he’s not making things up. Matt has excellent sources so I trust his site.

  25. whoamar says:

If we picked up burnetts salary and he is healthy, would the Jays dump him for a minor league P…say, humber or mulvey.

It would be one hurt P for another. And if AJ is heatlthy again, well, he was a horse with Penny 5 yrs ago.

  26. [...] MetsBlog’s Matt Cerrone reports than Smith is talking to other teams despite Santana’s proclamation that he will go only to the Yanks or the Red Sox. Cerrone also [...]

  27. stickguy says:

You are all missing the big picture.

Santana can pick which team he wants to play with. The only question is, does he join them in 2008 or 2009?

If he really wants the Mets say, and they don’t have enough to satisfy the Twins, he can pitch this year for Minn. and hea dto FA.

Or tell Minn that the only team he wil extend with is the Mets, or waive his no trade to. Even if he does them a favor and doesn’t make it public, it will still get him what he wants (without screwing the Twins)

ALthough to look at is selfishly, it is better for him if the team he goes to gives up little to get him! That way, he joins a better team.

Why go someplace that just unloaded all their talent for him> If he wants they, stay in Minn.

  28. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Matt, I think you need to start looking more into the Bedard situation and stop looking so much into Santana. It seems like the Mets are focused on Bedard and they know that they have no shot at Johan.

    • whoamar says:

      unless the comment ends with
“hank says to take a one-way hike to flushing”,

then the johan updates can keep coming.

  29. mjkru says:

I truly believe there is no chance Santana ends up on the Red Sox. They have Beckett and Matsuzaka already. Lester and Buchholz seem to be absolute studs. With Epstein’s devotion to building from within and the team having won a World Series on the backs of great young players, he’s going to be extremely reluctant to give up legitimate prospects in addition to someone such as Ellsbury. Besides, they should save those prospects to acquire offense. Who’s going to protect Ortiz in a couple of years? Manny and Lowell are getting up in years.

The Yankees need a legitimate ace in the worst way to counter Beckett and the rest of the Sox staff. If they are playing hardball, which it seems big bad Hank is, then it’s conceivable the Mets sneak in and nab Santana. I don’t understand the attractiveness of a Melky Cabrera/ Phil Hughes package. Cabrera has no more and probably less upside than either Carlos Gomez or Fernando Martinez. Hughes has great stuff, but shouldn’t there be some injury and durability concerns after he popped a hamstring last year,

Santana obviously sees the attractiveness of moving to the National League and seems to want to play for the Mets. Omar should say Reyes and Wright are untouchable, but the farm can be had. Omar knows he has to make a splash.

  30. landyg21 says:

It’s funny how the Yankees make these big stands and then come back like crazy ex girlfriends, lol. I guess when George left the Yankees lost their balls.

    • gomets6091 says:

does anyone else get the feeling that Hank Steinbrenner is gonna bring back the glory days of the 1980’s, when the Yankees sucked but his daddy was in the news all the time? I mean, over the past few years, Cashman has gotten more and more of a say, and has really re-built the farm system and has the team relying on young players from within rather than the high priced free agents. Then, out of nowhere, Hank comes along and starts running his mouth to the media, fires a hall of fame manager, spends MILLIONS of dollars just to re-sign last years players, tampers with players from other teams, and seemingly has locked Brian Cashman in a closet.

Needless to say, I’m really excited about the Hank Steinbrenner era.

      • millsy says:

I was having the same conversation with a friend who is a Yankee fan and fears that Hank Steinbrenner is the 2nd coming of the dumb George Steinbrenner era. It would be fun to watch again. Will Brian Cashman be relegated to the Murray Cook role of GM in name only?

If I were running the Yankees, I wouldn’t trade either Hughes or Chamberlain. Period! I hate the Yankees and it pains me to say it but these guys are going to be fine pitchers for many years assuming both stay healthy. I wish the Mets had arms like these guys.

  31. robmenna says:

If the package of Humber, Heilman, Gomez, and Mulvey is true for Bedard than why not also try Pelfrey, F Mart, Gotay and Guerra for Santana?

    Haha

    • whoamar says:

youre trading 3 top prospects and a ML for a 30 yr old albeit great, pitcher. If it takes that much dont make it. I would keep F-mart off limits. And Pelphrey was a CBB stud just last yr and they have invested far more in his mindset than the other guys at the ML level.

plus, bedard is 5 yrs younger. with your 2 deals I make the one for bedard. gomez is a basestealer right now, and Martinez is already hitting HRs at 18.

  32. icedrake523 says:

I hope nothing happens with the Yankees tonight. If I woke up and saw that on ESPN or whatever when I woke up, I would get sick to my stomach. I really would. I couldn’t go to school.

  33. ugbmets21 says:

it might make omar get bedard? im sure omar is not thinking ohh god only if the yanks get him i will make a splash! let the yanks get santana. can you imagine if they dont get to the world series with all they players and money they have!

i posted earlyer saying this could be the year maine and perez and pedro turn out to be #1s or 2s. i think maine and perez both have it. they have already proven themselfs in big games and the playoffs. so why not sign a silva and keep the farm.

the only thing that concerns me is how do you fill all the holes after 08…bc they will have a lot to fill

  34. landyg21 says:

Elijah Dukes and Lastings Milledge in the same outfield, lol. Who gets arrested first. Talk about Dwight Gooden and Strawberry 2008 version. Good luck Manny Acta.

    • landyg21 says:

Since 1998, he has been arrested 6 times on charges including possession of marijuana, assault, and resisting an officer. On May 23, 2007 it was reported that his wife filed a restraining order after he threatened to kill her.[2] On June 12, 2007, a 17 year-old foster child, who was living in the care of a relative of Dukes, accused him of impregnating her. Police say the sex was apparently consensual, and no crime was committed, but they are investigating. When the girl confronted Dukes, he allegedly got angry and threw a bottle of Gatorade at her.[3]

  35. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Either ESPN doesn’t know yet or the rumor is false because if ESPN knew, they would of already said that the Mets are close to getting Bedard.

  36. huge_mets_fan11 says:

The GM won’t give any clues because if it is close he won’t say it. He’ll probably say something like: ‘We have talked to the Mets but we have also talked with other teams as well.”

  37. mjkru says:

I wonder if the success of players like Scott Kazmir, Brian Bannister, Heath Bell, and Matt Lindstrom makes the Mets prospects any more attractive to other teams. That has to be a consideraton. By the way, how much better would the bullpen look with two hard throwers like Lindstrom and Bell who were never given the shot Guillermo Mota was given.

    Brilliant!

  45. huge_mets_fan11 says:

true but no matter who is interested in Santana, they’re going to talk about him first because he is the best pitcher in baseball.

  47. huge_mets_fan11 says:

That would be sweet, here we go they are talking now.

  48. darkstar73 says:

why? just because they’re the yankees? I would prefer he go to the yankees, the red sox would simply be too good at that point, even if we made it to the series, is anyone really going to beable to beat the Red Sox if they can line up Becket, Santana, Dice-K ( a better version most likely) and Buckholz (who’s already pitched a no-hitter and frankly looks nasty). It would be insane. I’m tired of this Yankees crap, us comparing ourselves to them. We’re our own team, NY is big enough for both of us. We don’t need to win to “take over NY.” We already have plenty of fans, who needs the backpages and Mike and the Maddog’s love?
