The Washington Post, citing ‘league sources’, is reporting that LHP Erik Bedard has informed the Baltimore Orioles that he has no interest in signing an extension to stay in Baltimore beyond 2009.
…this is interesting because initially the orioles seemed to just be testing the market to see what was out there, and weren’t necessarily looking to move bedard unless they could land a huge bounty. but with him all but saying he’s leaving when he becomes a free-agent in ‘09 it could push the orioles to trade him now while the market is hot and his value is high…

come on omar…redeem yourself
I think I am the only one who would actually prefer to see our kids who are ready cut their teeth as our 5th starter.
This year, we have minimum 2 at the moment who are ready and possibly 3 if you include Mulvey.
All are essentially in the same boat as Bannister was. A guy who was ready to be a ML pitcher.
My preference is to trade one of the pitchers who are ready in a package to get Bedard and whoever is left should be the guy to be the 5th starter.
Say we lose Church or Gomez, Pelfrey, Mulvey and NAthan Vineyared for Bedard.
I’d like our rotation to be Pedro, Bedard, Maine, Perez and Humber. I’d also stash Sosa in AAA (assuming he has options) and move Duque to the pen while praying one of our other starters in AA ball from last year could be ready in a pinch if need be to fill in for a stretch.
I don’t mind giving one of the kids a shot, but they have to earn it. Have an unannounced competition between the kid and El Duque and if the kid does better then politely ask El Duque if he’ll pitch out of the bullpen. If not, then the kid starts the year in AAA and no harm done.
In that case, Church, Heilman, Humber, and another prospect should get it done…i agree with the rabbi, redeem yourself Omar, perfect opportunity right here
What the heck are you smoking?
That offer won’t even open the door..
Ryan Church blows people.. he’s a 4th OF who can’t hit lefties.. he is NOT the missing piece to a deal.. he’s the latest and great omar minaya mistake.
He will fit nicely next to Burgos, John Adkins, and Ben Johnson.
church is a far more accomplished ml ballplayer than any of the other disasters you mention. he would be a throw-in to a deal for an ace but a signifcant chip nonetheless.
Those other “disasters” are the returns we got for the other two future all stars Omar traded last season.. and Church is not siginifcant.
He’s 29 and can only hit from one side of the plate, there is no ceiling to reach, he’s there, and as replaceable as a pair of underwear
Gomez/Heilamn/Humber or Pelfrey if they insist.
this deal has Mets written all over it.
word is Santana will only accept Yanks or Sox not Mets.
i’m sure posters will still blame Omar.
don’t give up heilman. give collazo and muniz instead.
not a whole lot of value there.
…it’s not that simple. Heilman’s a proven ML pitcher, Collazo and Muniz are scrubs who have never proven anything. Both of them put together don’t come close to equally Heilman’s value, whatever that may be
I’d read somewhere that the Twinkies love Gomez, but the O’s favor F-Mart. How ’bout offering Gomez, Church, Pelfrey, & Mulvey?.
O’s may want both Gomez & Church, which should be no problem. O’s can use a CF now. Church allows them to give Carlos the non-MLB ABs he still needs. Omar can ink Guillen, Fukudome, or Ramirez for RF. Any of the three I’d prefer over Church
Balt. may insist on Mets’ taking on one of their unwanted contracts (Mora?) in the deal, which would not be good. Still, that foursome, frankly, may not be enough for Bedard.
huff would be a nice salary take on, he can play RF/1B, and hes certainly good enough to be a 6 or 7 hitter.
Poop or get off the pot Omar
Get on this one quick Omar. Santana wants his deal done soon and whoever loses out in that sweepstakes may look to the O’s. Reports are coming out that LAD/Cabrera trade talks have hit a bump in the road so their attention might be turned towards Bedard as well. Get the deal done now so we don’t miss out
Of course, you have to figure that Baltimore isn’t looking to do the Yankees or the Red Sox any favors and that if the offers are comparible in any way, that Bedard would be sent to a National League option instead.
Absolutely, though, like with the Santana deal, if either the Bosox or the Yanks want to put together a better package, they will be able to.
Boston is barely willing to put in Ellsbury for Johan Santana, and if he’s in there then Lester and Buchholz are unavailable. You’re telling me that a package of Gomez or F-Mart, Pelfrey or Mulvey, and maybe another chip or two to even things up couldn’t compete with an offer like that?
Sure, if Boston gets crazy and throws in multiple of their top prospects then we can’t compete with that. But that doesn’t really seem to be the case, no does it?
this is a deal I think I’d really like to see…
Pelfrey/Gomez/Mulvey and Smith to the O’s
Bedard and Bradford to the Mets
Helps them unload a contract, and we get a rich man’s Smith in the deal to replace our Smith.
We pick between El Duque and Humber for our #5. Humber should be fully recovered from TJ surgery by spring and throwing harder than ever.
would also consider taking Mora for our RF platoon (he has 2 years left at about $17.2mm total), and Bradford is owed 2 years at $3.5mm per.
and if it ices the deal, give them Church. We’ll figure something out in RF.
Are you kidding? Bradford’s is a good contract. In today’s market and considering what awful pitchers like Mota and Schoeneweis are getting, Bradford’s contract is a bargain or at least very reasonable.
there have been reports that the O’s want to get out of it. so no, i am not kidding.
Show me a link. I haven’t seen any reports of the such. What reports I’ve seen is that they may try to trade him. And that many other teams were interested. Which is a different matter than trying to dump a salary. Mota is a salary dump. As much as Omar screwed up signing him, he did good in fixing his mistake.
You’re going to have to give up additional value to get Bradford.
Bradford isn’t a bad contract.
Melvin Mora, Aubrey Huff, Jay Gibbons, Jay Payton may qualify as bad. Would you want either one?
Danys Baez ? The orioles got nothing out of him in 2007, won’t get a thing out of him in 2008, and can only hope for the best in 2009. If I had to gamble on a bad contract, this would be the one.
I would take any of those guys if it helped us get Bedard. Not a moment’s hesitation.
The price of Berdard is going to be set by the final Santana deal.. not one deal up there is semi-realisitic for Berdard.. and the chances of us getting him are slim, if not none.
Look what happened last week.. we all posted for months putting Miledge in deals.. and what did we get back?
And now here everyone goes again? Give me a break… it ain’t happening, stop kidding yourselves.
WHile I agree that the deal parameters will be set by Santana….I also feel you will be abel to equate value similarly with our players…
Lets assume that Melky and Hughes wins the day plus some low level guy though of decently like Horne.
If similar parameters are expected in the deal for Bedard….
1) Melky = Church. Actually from a power and OBP perspective, Church would be more valuable though only a little.
2) Hughes >Pelfrey
3) Horne < Mulvey
Since 2 of the 3 parts of our deal are better than what the Yanks are giving up for Santana who is better and more durable than Bedard….I think it should get it done. But if they prefer Gomez to Church…do it anyway. If they say still need more….toss them a reliever you like but are not sold on. Muniz, Collaza, Dylan Owen from A ball, etc
I think if the deal we have heard for Santana hits and goes down, the greater the likelihood a deal happens with us an Balt for a deal like the above
Maine, Church( or gomez), & Pelfrey,
for
Mora & Bedard.
Maine corrects a mistake Baltimore made,
Mora comes home to play RF, correcting a mistake we made 7 years ago.
O’s get an established starting Pitcher,
We get an Ace.
They get a CF and a guy they can slide into the 5 spot.
We can still go out and get Silva to replace Maine, and let El Duque & Humber fight it out for the 5 spot. We also hang on to Mulvey
I see the logic but you have to admit that would be way more expensive than the deal the yanks would be paying for Santana.
For all the potential that Hughes may have, he has done nothing yet and not worthy of equating him to Maine. Maine has about a k per inning avg, won 15 games in this league and also a sub 4 era. Hughes has potential that likely exceeds Maine in the long run but no one can predict his career arc.
Why pay more for Bedard than the Yanks wil pay for santana?
…and then we’re out a quality starter (15 game winner!) we need. we’re not really getting that much better.
no no no. we shouldn’t trade perez or maine. we need to be adding strong arms to our starting rotation, not swapping pieces. i think we can get bedard with our chips, time will tell i suppose. we can only hope
and carlos silva is absolutely NOT an adequate replacement for john maine.
You can’t trade Maine and his 15 wins to get pitching help/Bedard. That makes the trade a virtual wash. You need to keep Ollie and Maine. They are the core of the staff for the next few years..
Millegde for Bedard…oops. for got we traded LM for NOTHING.
Gomez. Pelf, +1 for Bedard.
You have to give to get. If I’m an O’s fan, I wouldn’t want to deal with the Mets. Is there a Bird-blog? They’re probably screaming about dealing with Omar. Omar may be their version of “Billy Beane”
True, but you don’t want to give from your strength to get back similar value. If Maine repeats his 07 in 08 as a NYM and Berdard has a good year as a Met, you have 30-36 wins. Give up Maine for Bedard and replace Maine with Livan or Silva and you have 25-30 wins.
Unless you saw something that would think Maine can not or will not repeat his numbers next year…..you can not give him up.
But if you think Maine had a career year above his level (like Jae Seo), then strike hot.
Omar does not get enough credit for that trade. I realize with Sanchez being hurt now for 1.5 seasons, it is not a slam dunk. However, Seo is out of the league and Sanchez for the 1 full year he pitched for us was amongst the best 8th inning men in the game.
As an aside, I think the Bannister trade return value can not yet be deemed a total bust. Burgos’s injury clearly makes it impossible to judge. Obviously Bannister had a great season last year and Burgos got hurt and did not make it through more than a month and half of last year
But obviously since he pitched so little at AAA before getting hurt, his injury occured up here and was progressively making it harder for him to pitch.
I still hold out hope for Burgos. Not in 2008 but beyond. I also wish Bannister well. I hope he continues his success. Nice guy who is a ML pitcher and deserved a chance. A chance he would not have gotten with us which is stupid I know but true.
omar i lost all trust in you. tradeing mills for 2 players that are worth nothing really to the mets fans. you really needed to make a big trade here bringing back big names in the game. But the mets organization has proven 1s again its a second class organization. I am long life mets fan so it will be to the day i die, I wont jump ship on my teams. .But my support you wont get. If you are going to bring back players that are not big names and or least very good players………………
Boys
You are all freaking crazy..
I’m so tired of everyone bagging on Omar for this trade….You people have no idea what it takes to put together a good team if you think Millz is going to be a player. You all think this “fire” that he supposedly had was something to rave about..While I agree Omar waited too long, he was hoping that Millz would learn how to hit a breaking ball..and learn how to shut his yap once in a while. Neither happened and this is what came of it. Millz is the #7 hitter on the Nats…Lets remember that and see what happens
Secondly Bedard will not cost nearly as much as Santana and we will be dealing with different competition.
The O’s will not trade him in division and he has had a few good seasons…he by no means is a two time cy young winner who consistenly throws a lot of innings.
Gomez, Humber, Mulvey , Vineyard & Heilmann …can get us Bedard & Huff ….I dont care what any of you say.
Huff is a waste of space. Bring Bradford back. Two years back at his contract is a good deal. I’d rather deal F-Mart than Gomez honestly.
OMAR NEEDS TO LAND BEDARD. Gomez, Mulvey, and Pelfrey or Heilman{there choice) plus whatever else they would want.
He needs to do this and do this fast. Before the yanks or sox forget about Johan.
Omar please land Bedard!!!!!!!!
Bedars is the obvious choice since Baltimore won’t trade him within the division.
It will happen ONLY if they decide to move him.
Offer Gomez/Pelfey/Heilman and Humber.
No if Fmart has to be included
Bedard may cost more than Santana, if the Orioles get their way
