According to the Star-Tribune, Johan Santana and his agent are angry about, and denying a report that stated he will only accept a trade to the Yankees or Red Sox.
Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, as quoted by the Tribune…
“Johan told me to tell you that’s completely inaccurate…He’s upset about that. He’s put no limitations on (Twins GM Bill Smith) to do his job.”
…by the way, the word from seattle is that the Mariners are no longer in the bidding for santana…boy, that was quick…

Ha! I knew it. I said as much in the previous thread that brought this up. I still believe the Mets are on Santana’s YES list. Though, sadly, I don’t think the Mets have the chips to get him now.
Its a one in a million chance… Like the movie ‘Dumb and Dumber’ one character says “Yes… We still have a chance!!!”
Good Luck Omar…
This is all just a dance… The Yankees are going to get Santana for a song…
Yeah, my guess is he’ll be a Yankee unless Hank’s pissed off Smith so much that they won’t talk anymore.
Definitely going to be on the Sox or Yanks….
+1
Is it just me or is the Yankees offer not that enticing? I still don’t understand how the Yankees and Sox are the only tems with the chips to land Santana. Cabrera, Hughs and a mid-level prospect is so great? Cabrera is average, Hughs has proven nothing and a mid-level prospect can be found anywhere.
The Red Sox clearly have the better chips but seem reluctant to include what the Twins want.
I’m just confused and don’t see how Cabrera, Hughs and a prospect is THAT MUCH better than what the Mets could offer. Ryan Church has better number than Cabrera.
I agree. Milledge was a centerfielder in the minors and Is there anyone who doesnt think Milledge has a greater upside than Cabrera? Sure Hughes is better than any of our top pitching prospects but you have to think the Twins would also be interested in Heilimann. To my thinking, a package of Milledge, Heilimann, Pelfry or Humber (or both) and another prospect would have been on par
They want quality. Not quantity. The Mets don’t have anyone to equal Hughes or Ellesbury.
Exactly. Cabrera has two full years that can be called average…at best. I don’t see how a guy with his numbers could be a key part to getting this deal done. Church has much better numbers…just saying.
Ellsbury has 116 MLB at bats and he is a key cog to this deal also? What have Lester or Bucholz proven?
I think we are still in this and I’m not just being optimistic.
Bucholz pitched a no-hitter! Ellsbury has better minor league and major league stats than Gomez, Milledge or F-Mart.
That’s why the Twins insisted on Hughes. Because Cabrera is nothing special. But Hughes is still considered a big prospect, and better than anyone the Mets can offer the Twins right now. Same with Ellesbury. The Mets lack that elite prospect right now. Their only hope of getting Santana is if somehow the Yankes and Sox knocked each other out in which case either the Mets could slip in or the Twins decide not to trade him now. The Mets will have a much better chance at the trade deadline when his price drops OR if he becomes a free agent.
There are zero elite prospects in this bunch. The price for Santana is so much lower than I expected. Omar can go get him for Pelfrey, Humber, Gomez, and FMart. Do it.
None of those players you named is as highly regarded as Hughes. if you think so you must be smoking something.
They’re looking for quality. Not quantity.
I don’t think the Mets prospects are that far off from Hughes, but they just aren’t considered as valuable.
vcarver is right its not a quantity thing its a quality thing. we could throw 10 guys at the twins but not 1 of them is better than ellsbury or hughes so why would the twins care. its like saying would you rather have 1 jose reyes or 5 david ecksteins.
Yeah but Hughes minor league record is startlingly good. He’s the best prospect of anyone who’s been offered so far. Although the difference in Melky and Gomez is pretty large, a .500 record and 4.00ish ERA for Pelfrey in 2007 might not have even brought the Mets package up to par. It would be a heck of a lot closer though.
Cabrera is what 5-6 years younger then Church? I think Melky is more or less garbage.. but if you’re trading for someone at least get someone young..
Hughes is probably in the top 5 young pitchers in baseball converstaion…
I agree the Sox couold get him for a Lester and Ellbury pacakge.. I don’t think Lester is that good to not get 6 years of Johan for..
Either way.. we get the Nats left over crap.. and the Yanks get the best pitcher on the planet.
Welcome to life as a Mets fan
Go take a look around the internet and see what you can find out about Mike Pelfrey and Lastings Milledge or now Ryan Church(still hard to believe Omar did that). Take the same routes to find out about Melky Cabrera and Phil Hughes. Now compare a third prospect to a known commodity such as say Heilman. Then come up with a reasonable answer as to why the Twins are so sour on our deal as opposed to others like the Yankees.
reminds me of dumb and dumber
“what are my chances of us getting together like one in a hundred…….more like one in a million……so your telling me there’s a chance….YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
I knew that report had to be wrong! I don’t think the Mets are completely out of this yet. If the Yankees and Sox don’t up their offers we could still trump them with quantity.
sorry mets6986, you got it first
Isn’t just Yanks, Sox or bust for all of us? Why do we even have 28 other teams, other than to produce fodder for the only teams on earth htat matter? I mean FOX and ESPN say its so, so why not go along with it?
And hey, can someone tell Hanky boy that the world doesn’t revovle around him? Here’s the deal, the Twins have what you want, not the other way around. I don’t think they went into this with the primary objective of somehow prying Phil Hughes away from you. You’ve already proven your little ultimatums and deadlines aren’t worth the foul breath that accompanies them, so keep them to yourself.
Agree 110%. I’m sure that the Yanks aren’t just going to walk away from the table if the Sox are still in the hunt.
If for whatever reason they end up keeping their word then the Yanks better pray to their personal god that an NL team lands Santana b/c if he goes to the Sox you might as well call the ALCS for the next 4-5 years the “Boston Red Sox vs. the AL team that probably won’t make the World Series” Round.
With Santana in Boston, that means that the Yankees supposed ace would be at the very best the equivalent of Boston’s 3rd starter. And if Dice K makes rapid progress then that might put Wang down as low as their 4th.
Since it’s 99.99% likely that Santana is not coming here, he might as well go to the Sox so I can call out all the Yankees fans I know that love to belittle the wild card because after that deal is done that’s the only way for the Yankees to even dream of the playoffs.
I never understood why Santana would make such a declaration, even if he really only wanted the Yanks or Boston.
Biggest choke of the year deserves the biggest acquisition of the year. Remember that Omar.
