News: Santana says Yanks, Red Sox, or bust
By Chris Mazzone - Dec 3, 2007 2:02 am

Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal is reporting that LHP Johan Santana will only accept a deal to the Yankees or Red Sox.

…santana, like the rest of us, seems to be growing impatient with how long this is dragging on. let’s see if this ultimatum, combined with the one the yankees laid down earlier, will help move this thing along…

McAdam also writes that the Red Sox are considering RHP Dan Haren and have been in discussions with the Brewers regarding RHP Ben Sheets, in case they don’t land Santana.

…the brewers may not be actively looking to trade sheets, but they’re listening to offers…i’d expect the mets to at least inquire as sheets is a legit front-of-the-rotation starter, when healthy…

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Mets play second fiddle again. Santana wont accept the Mets? Then the hell with him.

Get Bedard, get Haren, get someone Omar, otherwise enjoy 2nd or 3rd place

      Here comes Livan!

      • jdon says:

How about this: sign Livan,Bartolo, David Wellsand next year,Sabbathia. We wil;l have the heaviest laundry of anyteam in baseball.

        • kevin2elster21 says:

When Sabathia becomes available, Mets will drop the ball on him as well. Besides, I’m not too keen on the idea of young fat pitchers. They only get fatter.

  2. Two-By-Four says:

Jon Heyman on “Mic’d Up” (Franscesa’s show on NBC) said he spoke to a Sox executive in the hallway who said , and I’m not quoting exactly, let the Yankees win December….we’ll win October….Heyman took this to mean Johann is going to the Yankees.

This seems pretty outrageous to me. By allowing this information to leak to the public, Santana has done a BIG number on the Twins by eliminating all the mystery about who the bidding teams are. The Twins are pretty much screwed now, and will probably just give him whatever he wants. What a surprise. This type of disloyal, greedy behavior shown by superstar players nowadays always seems to be rewarded. They have half the league whipped. If I were the Twins, I would punish him for this by keeping him until his contract expires. Even if he despises playing for them, we all know he’ll have to do well next year since the next 5-10 years of his income would depend on it. Too bad nothing else seems to matter. Good riddance; let’s get someone whose passionate about our team and not the pitching version of A-Rod.

disloyal to the team that is trying to trade him? Wha?? Who won’t pay him what he’s worth? Who gets rid of all of their players? keeping him til his contract expires punishes the Twins, not Santana… they get nothing for him. I say good for him, at least he controls his own destiny. This is exactly why he has a no trade clause.

    • VCarver says:

Huh? Santana earned the right to write his own ticket. That’s just what he’s doing now. Plenty of players do the same with their veto rights. Happens every day. But Santana somehow has relinquished that right? I don’t get it.

    • adropofvenom says:

Why would someone be looking to do their soon-to-be former team any favors? And he really didn’t do too much damage in that he left the 2 biggest bidders in there to bid amongst themselves for him. It’s not like he said the Yankees or the Royals. lol

    Are ya readin’ MetsBlog, Omar?
    Let’s get this thing rollin’.
Third place is not somewhere I want to go without winnin’ nothin’.*

*Could be 4th if the Marlins trade good.

I’m not too sure if the Mets had already been actively involved in the bidding war for his services that Santana wouldn’t have included them in his list. But they were told early that they didn’t have the chips to get him, so it’s a moot point. There were rumors that other teams outside the AL East such as the Mariners had gotten involved in the bidding so perhaps Santana’s remarks were directed more at them.

Regardless, what Omar’s scramble for elite starting pitching underscores is the Mets need to do a much better job of drafting and developing their own. Maybe they need to improve both the scouting department and their development philosophy. And stop drafting so many relievers. It’s easier to get relievers through free agency and trades than it is top notch starters. If you overpay for relievers it’s only to the tune of 2-4M a year. But overpaying for starters is more costly.

    • Gland says:

Excellent point. I doubt he wouldn’t come to the Mets, I think that when the Twins have told him who are serious players the Mets are not on the list.

What happened to all those sources saying he wanted to come to NL to bat?

  9. tomterif says:

Why is Santana suddenly saying he wouldn’t come to the Mets? I thought it wanted NY, the National League where he could hit, be with his friend Luis Castillo, etc? And if the Yankees are now only offering Hughes, Melky and a mid-level prospect, how can we not at least match that? Is Pelfry so inferior to Hughes that with Gomez (more upside than Melky) and perhaps Mulvey, our package wouldn’t be better? It would seem there’s an opening for the Mets in this.

omar i lost all trust in you. tradeing mills for 2 players that are worth nothing really to the mets fans. you really needed to make a big trade here bringing back big names in the game. But the mets organization has proven 1s again its a second class organization. I am long life mets fan so it will be to the day i die, I wont jump ship on my teams. .But my support you wont get. If you are going to bring back players that are not big names and or least very good players………………
