News: The Winter Meetings are Here

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 8:26 am

The 2007 MLB Winter Meetings will begin this morning in Nashville, TN, and will run through Thursday afternoon.

The Meetings bring together every corner of Major League Baseball’s universe, from GMs, to reporters, to agents, to job seekers, to the occasional player.

from what i understand, for most of the day, teams collect in their individual suites, which are complete with wipe boards, computers, charts, food and plenty of caffeine, while reporters huddle in the lobby searching and writing for something to write about…occasionally, an agent or team official will slide by them, stop, chat and give a quote or two, while other writes scurry for the latest insight and rumor in to what teams are doing upstairs

…usually, trades get done on Wednesday, as they need a few days to develop, while a free agent signing or two could get out of the way earlier than later

The meetings will run non-stop through Thursday, December 7.

the word from Nashville is that the hotel’s lobby is beginning to fill up, as media await the trickling down of general managers and agents, hopefully with news to report

like last year, Joel Lipsky, a well-connected, loyal reader of MetsBlog, will be combing the lobby, talking with reporters, gm’s, etc., so to give us a sense of what it’s like to be at the meetings, while relaying some news and the occasional rumor, or two, as well
