News: O’s to Meet the Mets about Bedard

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Orioles COO Andy MacPhail says he expects to meet with Mets GM Omar Minaya about LHP Erik Bedard while in Nashville, reports Andrew Marchand of ESPN 1050 in New York.

Talking to reporters while in Nashville earlier today, McPhail said he is open to exploring offers for Bedard.

Last night, in the Washington Post, citing ‘league sources,’ Barry Svrluga wrote that Bedard has said he has no interest in signing a contract extension to stay with the O’s beyond 2009, which could provide additional motivation for his team to move him in a trade during this off-season.

…as i wrote earlier today, the early buzz from nashville suggests that to get bedard or Dan Haren, it may end up costing more than the Twins will get for santana, since, technically, the A’s and O’s do not have to make a trade

…for instance, to get haren, the Mets may be asked to part with Carlos Gomez or Ryan Church plus Fernando Martinez, along with two pitchers, ranging from John Maine to Aaron Heilman to Phil Humber…for what it’s worth, i don’t believe the A’s have much interest in Mike Pelfrey…it will take a similarly large package to land bedard, who may cost more than haren at this point…

Meanwhile, ESPN.com writes that Bedard is drawing ‘massive interest’ from the Dodgers, Mariners, Mets, Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies, among others, though he writes that the Orioles think they could have a ‘potential match’ with the Dodgers.

Buzz: Nationals may soon get Elijah Dukes

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 2:41 pm

According to the St. Petersburg Times, ‘the buzz at the winter meetings this afternoon’ is that the Rays will soon trade OF Elijah Dukes to the Nationals.

For what it’s worth, the Nationals and Rays have a press conference scheduled for 5 pm.

Additionally, MLB.com is writing that the Devil Rays have been shopping RHP Edwin Jackson, who is drawing interest from the the Mariners.

jackson is 24, a fallen prospect with a quick arm who arbitration eligible this off season…

In a report for the New York Post in early November, Mark Hale wrote that the Mets had talked to the Rays during the GM Meetings, but not about LHP Scott Kazmir.

Update3:40 pm

In a post to his blog for the Washington Post, Barry Svrluga says that Dukes will get sent to DC for essentially nothing, as the Rays are simply trying to clear a roster spot.

Update4:03 pm

At FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes that the deal is official, swapping Dukes for a minor-league player to be named later.

Buzz: Twins Still not Sold on Trading Johan

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 2:25 pm

…i don’t know if it’s the ping-pong one-upping going on between the Yankees and Red Sox, or the Yankees threat to call off negotiations after today, but there is more and more buzz coming from Nashville suggesting that the Twins may just sit on Johan Santana, take more time to work out an extension, and have him for opening day next season…

…of course, this could just be a retaliatory threat from the Twins through the media, in hopes of motivating the Yankees and Twins to pull the trigger

Buzz: The Marlins want a lot for Cabrera

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 1:59 pm

At the MLB Experts Blog for Yahoo!, reporting from Nashville, Steve Henson explains that talks between the Dodgers and Marlins regarding 3B Miguel Cabrera, just as they have with the Angels.

According to Henson, the Marlins want OF Matt Kemp, 1B James Loney and LHP Clayton Kershaw.

…what has gotten in to the Marlins…it reminds me of the Chuck Lamar days in Tampa Bay…i mean, why not ask for Tommy Lasorda while they’re at it

Henson also provides info on the relief-pitching market, and whether the Rangers may trade 3B Hank Blalock.

Buzz: A’s Don’t like Mets Prospects

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 1:24 pm

According to Peter Gammons, in a post to his blog for ESPN.com, A’s GM Billy Beane has let the Mets know that they ‘don’t seem to have the talent’ needed in a trade for RHP Dan Haren or Joe Blanton.

Gammons also says that trading Lastings Milledge probably ended the Omar Minaya’s chances of acquiring Indians LHP Cliff Lee, who the Indians will listen to proposals for, ‘but won’t trade him unless they get overwhelmed.’

News: Johan did NOT say Yanks, Sox or Bust

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 12:56 pm

According to the Star-Tribune, Johan Santana and his agent are angry about, and denying a report that stated he will only accept a trade to the Yankees or Red Sox.

Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, as quoted by the Tribune…

“Johan told me to tell you that’s completely inaccurate…He’s upset about that.  He’s put no limitations on (Twins GM Bill Smith) to do his job.”

by the way, the word from seattle is that the Mariners are no longer in the bidding for santana…boy, that was quick…

News: MetsBlog and SNY agree to Partnership

by Matthew Cerrone on December 3rd, 2007 at 12:49 pm

Roughly one year ago, I approached SportsNet New York (SNY) to talk about how they could potentially benefit from the success of MetsBlog.com, and how MetsBlog could benefit from being associated with them.

SNY is New York’s newest sports and entertainment television network, and ‘home of the Mets, Jets and all things New York sports.’

Last week, following several month’s worth of phone calls and meetings, MetsBlog.com and SNY officially agreed to a partnership.

For the most part, according to our agreement, very little will change, in that SNY will have no editorial control – nor will they be able to directly alter how the site looks and feels.  Without that assurance, I never would have entered into this arrangement.

At the same time, I intend to write MetsBlog.com as it has always been written.  I will continue to appear on SNY programming – giving my opinion on the team and also promoting MetsBlog – and we will work together to create original online-video content that will appear on both of our sites.  Additionally, I will help SNY develop new team-specific blogs for their website.

Furthermore, MetsBlog.com will have better access to the team, players, and information, which will make for far more original content then ever before.

Like you, my biggest concern had been that SNY will try to alter the site’s voice.  However, and I cannot reiterate this point enough, it is still Matthew Cerrone’s MetsBlog.com – in every way, shape and form.  From this point forward, though, in addition to writing MetsBlog in the exact same way you have come to trust, I now have better access to the team; better access to video content, and top-of-the-line equipment and producers to help create it; and, most important, you will get better and more original material to read and watch throughout the day.
