According to Jim Molony, at his blog for MLB.com, the Mets, Phillies, Dodgers, Angels and Cardinals are among the teams interested in O’s LHP Erik Bedard.
…by the way, i am now convinced that the Mets acquired Ryan Church to trade him in a package for a pitcher, or, at least make it easier to trade Carlos Gomez, or trade both for that matter, because they so badly want to keep Fernando Martinez…of course, if it doesn’t happen, Omar Minaya will be more than comfortable starting church at Shea Stadium next season…
…i keep getting e-mails from fans and insiders suggesting that the Mets may offer Ryan Church, Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman and one of Mike Pelfrey or Phil Humber for Erik Bedard, for whom i have also heard Joe Smith occasionally mentioned, as well, which all seems like a lot to me…then again, it’s becoming more and more clear that for the Mets to acquire an ace, it’s going to take a lot, and a lot on top of that…
Earlier today, during an appearance on WFAN, beat-reporter Sweeny Murti said, “There is news floating around that the Mets are close on Bedard.”
…i still don’t know what ‘close’ is supposed to mean in that statement, though…are the Mets ‘close’ to completing a deal, ‘close’ to what baltimore is asking for, were they standing ‘close’ to him in the hallway…i don’t know…logically, i just find it hard to believe that, with as many as seven teams interested in bedard, magically the Mets now have the best collection of prospects to get him…this is not to say they can’t eventually get him, i just find it hard to believe that baltimore will pull the trigger so quickly…

Never trusted Sweeni Murti that Yankee backer
as much as we would give up for him…id be comfortable doing it….as long as we keep either gomez or fmart…bedard has the potential to be a star in new york…the type of ace we need
As long as we keep Mulvey, Gomez or FMart.
as i’ve always said, our prospects will be mediocre at best. get rid of all of them for an ace.
The Mets prospects are better than we keep hearing IMO. I think the Mets will land an ‘ace”
But, if we dont, I dont think we will be in such dire straits that alot of bad Mets fan seem to think we would be.
I really hope that the rumor of Tejada being thrown in for money reasons is the truth. I think we could spin him to the Angels for maybe Saunders or another pitcher.
Bedard is right there with Santana. Clearly both are better than Haren. Blanton is a big step down. This idea that he is an “ace” is hogwash. He’s a good 3/bad 2.
the reason why you hear Joe Smith is cuz Ray and Baez are OUT FOR THE SEASON already. No one on this blog seems to realize this. Our package for Bedard won’t only be DIFFERENT, it may be more ENTICING, because we have a great set up guy in Heilman, and some good young bullpen arms with upside. U add in a young starter and a Gomez OR Church, and suddenly you have a very nice package for the O’s. Gomez, Heilman, Smith, and Mulvey/Humber/Pelfrey SHOULD get it done.
Then you try and re-acquire Nady and suddenly you have a nice OF of Alou, Beltran, Church, Nady, Endy.
Finalize THOSE moves with a FA signing of a reliever and suddenly the mets are in good shape, adding Bedard, Nady, Church. Duque in the pen, Dirty Sanchez returning, and let’s say Ron Mahay, or Affeldt.
i used the word SUDDENLY a lot in that last post. I’m gonna SUDDENLY go to sleep now. I hope i suddenly wake up and see we’re the front runners for Mr. Bedard
you mean wake up and find we have Bedard
but dealing for Laredo Joe means that Bal would have TWO sidearmers (Bradford, and hypothetically, Smith). Doesn’t seem to make much sense from the O’s standpoint
Not interested in Nady. Been there, done that. He is a .260 hitter who swings out of his shoetops and never gets a hit w/ RISP. He is also a bit of a slug in the OFer.
Pass.
the dude hit like .320 with RISP last year. i’ve seen that myth elsewhere as well and i have no clue where it comes from. .320 is better than any of our guys did last year
How about a package of Reyes, Pelfrey, and Gomez to the Orioles for Tejada, Bedard, and Bradford??
Any takers?
Please lay off the crack, thank you.
nope
maybe if they throw in adam loewen and #5 overall pick C Mark Weiters… and that’s MAYBE
insane mets fan is right
Bedard is going to come with Aubrey Huff or Kevin Millar. Orioiles want to dump as much salary on the Mets as possible.
The Mets won’t add salary, not with Freddie Coupons adn the Discount Family owning this team.
Yes, the Mets are soooo cheap that only have the third highest payroll in MLB…..
I just read a post that said Tejada might be part of the deal. Does anyone think we could then send him to the Angels??
Sure, but what would the Mets get for him?? The Angels would know they Mets can’t keep him because of Reyes.
But again, FORGET ABOUT THE METS TAKING ON SALARY. The WIlpons own this team, they want profits not wins. The budget is 120 million…END OF STORY!
I think if we could some how pull off a trade for Bedard and Tejada, then sending Tejada to the Angels for E. Santana or Saunders the Wilpons wont mind bucking up and paying Tejadas contract. Everyone wins there. The fans get our Ace and a #5 starter the Os get younger and save cap room and The Halos get a SS for almost nothing
the whole point of the tejada thing is that we’re not going to get those prospects. the O’s will, which beefs up our offer. then we pay a chunk of tejada’s salary for wherever he goes next
everyone listen…the wilpons put a ton of money in the new ball park, it is there BABY. Wilpons prize…he doesnt care about money right now. he needs the best pr for his new stadium as much as possible, believe me $ is not the issue.
isnt heilman a free agent soon this year or next? so y would he be the deal breaker? i realy do love gomez. but is he really a corner outfielder? and if htey are high on martinez and want him when hes ready, gomez has to b expandable!
ugbmets21, you are completely delusional. IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY WITH THE WILPONS. ALWAYS.
The run this team for profits not for wins,. If you want an example, just remember the 2006 post-season, the Wilpons had the luxury of 6 home post=season games, all sell outs. The team netted at least $75 million in two week alone probably more. Did the Wilpons take that mone and reinvest it into the team last off season??? No, they didn’t they stuffed it in their pockets, unless you count Alou, Mota, and Schowenweis as reinvesting in the team.
If the Wilpons don’t care about money, they would have given us Zito last year.
So spend money just because you have it? You would be happy sitting on Barry Zitos contract right now?
give me a break. get lost. Im not saying the Wilpons will spend at any cost but if the move makes sense they will spend the money.
No point in spending money on players that dont desereve it. Otherwise we would be hearing from people liek you…”how dumb are the mets for paying zito, x, x this amount” “now we are stuck and cant go after any fa”!,,,,,maybe they should buy you a clue?
Zito who the hell wanted Zito thank god we did not get him he would have been booed out of NY by now…
InsaneMetsFan, you suggested that the Mets swap Jose Reyes with Miguel Tejada. you’re credibility is severely diminished.
What’s up with this old post being reposted?
Please, get it done Omar!!
I agree get Bedard!!!!!!
It’s a lot of players, but to be honest, none of these players that were mentioned as being offered by the Mets have shown a consistent longterm high talent on a ML level – I mean, maybe Heilman, but he even is a bit rough around the edges. Gomez is young and has potential, Smith had an amazing first 2 months and then fell off, Church had one decent season, Pelfrey and Humber haven’t even figured out how to be major leaguers yet. So, it’s not a lot at all for a guy who especially when you look at his ERA and K/BB ratio has already been consistently been on a premier ML starter, if not ace level for 4 years.
Murti has no idea of what he’s talking about. He did like 5-6 interviews on WFAN throughout the day starting with Joe Boningo and continuing through MATMD. Each time he was being pressed for hot rumors. If there was ANY truth to that it would have been widespread and at least verified by one legitimate sports news site like ESPN, FOX, etc.
This is the time of year that rumors and speculation are dished out like turkey on Thanksgiving. Every little murmur is magnified and then it spreads like wildfire in the blogosphere as it morphs into a larger than life story that never had any truth as it’s basis to begin with.
This entire Bedard rumor was weak and had no legs and was ignited more because of wishful thinking than anything else in my opinion..
Sorry, Matt, I don’t buy the fatc that teams are dying to have Ryan Church. The Nats made him available last year, and there were no takers. Now, all of a sudden, he’s a hot property?
not a hot property, but he was value, because he drove in 72 runs and showed himself to be a quality gap hitter this year. his value is obviously higher
When is everyone going to realize that these talking heads at the meetings have to justify there existence and have to say something in order to get on the air. If Sweeney called and said I’ve got nothing to report then why bother even going to him for a report, but if he says that he hears (from the bellhop or the coffee shop waitress) that the Mets are close to Tom Seaver then bingo he gets air time. Half the time he gets on the air with Chubby and the 48 year old Virgin they lambaste his reports so it is grain of salt time again.
the mets will doing nothing, solidifying their 3rd place finish in 2008
