Buzz: Mariners, O’s to Meet on Bedard
By Jordan Zakarin - Dec 4, 2007 1:01 am

According to the Seattle Post Intelligencer, the Mariners have all but removed themselves from the Johan Santana sweepstakes, and are now concentrating on signing Japanese RHP Hiroki Kuroda, offering a four-year deal worth $44 million.

More pertinent to the Mets, the Post Intelligencer also reports that the Mariners have interest in Baltimore LHP Erik Bedard, and will meet with the Orioles on Tuesday.

The Mariners could offer a competitive package of prospects, including OF Adam Jones, RHP Brandon Morrow and C Jeff Clement.

…so, really, who knows where bedard negotiations are at this point…the O’s seem to be pulled in a lot of different directions…

    great coverage, metsblog!

more I look at Bedard, the less I want to give up the farm for him. I see a guy who’s never thrown 200, had a spike last year…is it real? I’m not saying he isn’t, just…wary.

My proposal for Mets getting Bedard is a 3-way with the Angels. The Mets have more money than prospects; they need to take $ back in swaps. I posted this on an earlier Bedard thread, but it got buried…

LAA gives: Brandon Wood (SS/3B), Jeff Mathis (C), Erwin Santana (P), Kelvim Escobar (P)

LAA gets: Miguel Tejada (SS-Bal); John Maine (P-Mets)

BAL gives: Miguel Tejada (SS); Eric Bedard (P)

BAL gets: Brandon Wood (SS/3B – LAA), Jeff Mathis (C – LAA), Erwin Santana (P – LAA), Fernando Martinez (OF-NYM), Mike Pelfrey (P-NYM) plus relief from big salaries

NYM gives: John Maine (P), Fernando Martinez (OF), Mike Pelfrey (P), lots of $ to LAA via swapping Maine for Escobar

NYM gets: Kelvim Escobar (P-LAA), Eric Bedard (P-BAL).

Angels give up 1 ML pitcher, and 2 top prospects, for Tejada, balancing the added $ in the field by cutting salary & getting young in the rotation by taking Maine for Escobar. With a lineup of Figgins, Kendrick, Tejada, Vlad, Anderson, Hunter, Kotchman, Matthews & a catcher (anyone!), and a rotation of Lackey, Weaver, Maine, Garland & Saunders, they’d be tough to beat.

Baltimore gets 1 proven young pitcher, plus Pelfrey, plus Tejada’s replacement, plus a catcher that allows them to dump Ramon and a player for the future in F-Mart. Cabrera, Santana, Loewen, Guthrie & Pelfrey isn’t a bad young rotation, and Wood & Mathis are building block players. Roberts & Mora should be around when F-Mart hits his stride in 2010, so the O’s are close to competing with the big dogs of the AL East when the Yankees fall apart with age.

Mets give up a huge upside in F-Mart, get older & pricier at the back end of the rotation, all in order to get a #1 in Bedard. Bedard, Pedro, Perez, Escobar and a FA pickup for #5, with Humber & Duque in reserve, all without touching the starting lineup. Bedard is cheap for 2 years, by when you can replace the FA pickup with Mulvey or Guerra, probably. 2 tough lefty starters, as a bonus…

      wow… very inventive.

I think I would rather keep Maine for Escobar and instead pay a significant part of Tejada’s deal.

But not bad at all, well thought out and seemingly fair for all involved. I would guess the Angels would balk at the Mets seemingly buying thier prospects when they actually end up paying Tejada insead of Escobar.

The way the market seems to be valuing young pitchers under control Maine may have more value than we are thinking. His numbers arent much less than Bedard and he is under control for two years more than Bedard. I’d hate to see him leave though.

Not bad, but i doubt O’s would have major interest in mathis. Though he is well regarded, they just spent their #1 on Mark Weiters from Ga Tech and he could be contributing by the end of the year.
