Buzz: Marlins and Tigers talk Cabrera and Willis
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 4, 2007 11:46 am

In a recent update for FoxSports.com, citing ‘major-league sources,’ Ken Rosenthal writes that the Tigers and Marlins are in ‘preliminary talks’ about a deal that could send Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for a package of young players, such as OF Cameron Maybin and LHP Andrew Miller.

honestly, i’m starting to worry about the Tigers and D’Backs, who, from what i understand, are throwing their weight around the trade market, while looking for a starting pitcher

the buzz from Nashville has been that the Tigers have interest in O’s LHP Erik Bedard, A’s RHP Danny Haren and RHP Joe Blanton, and apparently willis, and are dropping miller and maybin in talks, as rosenthal suggests….

additionally, the D’Backs are rumored to have interest in the same set of pitchers, as do the Mets, but can dangle OF Conor Jackson, OF Carlos Gonzalez, and newly acquired Chris Carter, among others, during their efforts

This is NEVER gonna happen. I don’t think there’s a GM out there who would trade 2 top stars in one deal. They could each net a lot more if dealt separately. The Marlins could get 8 good players out of these guys…Who does Detroit have? This is a wild goose chase, Matt, drop it…

Huh? Who are those guys? Willis and Cabrera straight up for them and we can’t get anything going? I just don’t understand.

OK, start putting together nonsensical packages so the Mets can get them. Let me start:

Gotay, Smith, Humber, Church and Estrada

Come on guys, don’t let me down!

How about Wright, Pelfrey, Gomez, and Estrada for Willis, Cabrera, and Cody Ross.

Yeah, cuz Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller aren’t two of the best young players/prospects in baseball.

Minaya should be fired not just for all of the bad trades/moves he’s made in the last 2 years (Bell, Bannister, Milledge, Owens, Lindstrom, losing Flores, signing Mota/Franco)…but more importantly now for destroying our farm system. 1-2 years ago, The Mets’ system was considered a top 5 farm system. Now it’s garbage in part because he has drafted poorly and in part because he destroyed the value of Milledge, Gomez, Pelfrey, etc., with the way he handled them. Fire him now.

I think it takes a lot longer to build or destroy a farm system than you think. I’m not sure how much turnover there was when he took over, or how to evaluate the new system (if there was one) this early in Omar’s tenure. And, yes, it’s early. It seems like he’s been around forever, but guys drafted in June, ‘05 could be 21 right now.

difficult to build, easy to destroy

It was never considered top 5. And when it was ranked higher, it was because Wright/Reyes/Milledge/Kazmir/Peterson/Huber were in the system. It was considered to be very top heavy, and once those guys graduated to the bigs, or were moved in trades, the farm was empty.

Omar has begun to replenish the system through international free agency (the method he used to get FMart, Guerra, AND Reyes), which doesn’t recieve as much hype as the draft. He brings these guys in at age 16, and they take time to develop. Consider the fact that FMart, the first guy he brought about is just 19, and not yet ripe…we can go beyond that–Reyes was signed in 1999…but it took him till ‘02 to even get noticed by scouts, and he only got to the show in June of ‘03….Patience, guys.

haha, where do people get this stuff? Our farm system was NEVER considered to be top 5, where you’re getting this info (your imagination) is beyond me. It’s just straight up lies, all of it.

1. Cant judge the Millege Trade a week later!!!!
2. Ownes and Lidstrom yielded crap in return but they would barely crack our bullpen rotation last yr
3. Flores? Cmon seriously - hes not better than Vance Wilson
4. Bell / Banister - Bad deals - it happens
5. We have no farm to destroy
6. Let the man do his job - its December!!!

why is it that everytime a trade from another team is offered we all say “theyre trading garbage”. isnt it possible these prospects are good we just dont know who they are. honestly, do you think a team is saying “yea the mets can offer more but we’d rather get these bums”, no. teams get the most they can get for guys they are trading. ill admit i cant keep up with other teams’ prospects so maybe its just me but when i dont know who a guy is i dont automatically assume hes some scrub.

Comment by zer09
2007-12-04 12:01:56

It’s not the point of whether they’re scrubs or not. Think back to the package the halos offered for Cabrera and the Marlins said no. You throw Dontrelle in there and you need to net at least a comparable package to Blanton…which puts this at 7-8 top flight guys. There is no team that can meet that price alone, it’s as simple as that…

If other teams won’t accept the boatload of our prospects, it’s time to shut down the warroom and just play the hand we’re dealt and hope for the best.

For those of you who dont know, Maybin and Miller are regarded as 2 of the best prospects in the game…..Cerrone didnt say Maybin and Miller for DTrain and Cabrera, he said a package of young players such as….

I highly doubt the Marlins want to trade either of their best players to another NL East team

why don’t we trade johnny estrada and carlos delgado for a top catcher prospect, then trade the catcher prospect and four of our top prospects (except fernando martinez) for miguel cabrera and dontrelle willis

Yet ANOTHER reason (or two) the Mets can’t get an ace without parting with Reyes (which is a NO GO, flip them off, Omar, sort of demand.)

I find it weird that the Mets might include Church in a deal for a pitcher for one reason. They’ve done the conference calls and the SNY interviews with the guy talking about his how excited he is to be on his new team. They didn’t do that with Estrada, and as soon as I saw Church and Schneider doing the media rounds something in my mind told me these guys wouldn’t be moved. It certainly would be awkward if Church was moved after all of that, but I guess anything is possible.

It wouldn’t be awkward. It’s all business.

However, I get the exact same feeling that neither will be moved. I think Omar’s in love with Church’s doubles potential and thinks Schneider ca
