Buzz: Mid-Day Update from Pitcher’s Market
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 4, 2007 1:27 pm

According to Jon Heyman from SI.com, the Mets and Dodgers are at the ‘forefront of talks’ involving Orioles LHP Erik Bedard.

well, this is interesting, because the Dodgers are also interested in Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera, who will likely cost a similar package as needed to get bedard…damn, this is all connected

In a post to ESPN.com, Amy Nelson writes that Bedard will cost a ‘superior package of prospects,’ while adding that the O’s are telling clubs they already have four teams with ‘very promising packages.’

…thanks to birkhead for the tip

…as i noted earlier, the word from Nashville is that Mets GM Omar Minaya and a few of his assistants either met with, or are set to meet with, representatives from the Orioles in baltimore’s hotel suite following this morning’s State of the GMs get-together

the buzz from baltimore, not Nashville, but from baltimore, continues to suggest that the O’s still don’t really want to trade Erik Bedard, and so he may cost a team more than the Twins get for Johan Santana…they are debating whether to trade him for talent that can help next season or keep him, allow more time for an extension and if it can’t work out they can always trade him next off-season, after which he will still be under control by his new team through the following season…however, it’s quite clear that they’re working hard to determine his value, and will not hesitate to pull the trigger if the right deal comes along

frankly, i keep sensing that, while they’re totally focused on bedard right now, as they should be, the Mets also have interest in A’s RHP Joe Blanton, more than they do in his teammate, Dan Harenalso, there is some indication that the Mets could have interest in LHP Noah Lowry, should he be available

In 26 starts this past season for the Giants, the 27–year-old, left-handed Lowry was 14–8 with a 3.92 ERA, during which opponents hit .265 against him.

However, he had been 9–6 with a 3.33 ERA at the All-Star break. He missed all of September with a sore elbow, on which an MRI revealed a mild strain and no structural damage.

Lowry will earn $2.25 million in 2008, and $4.5 million in 2009, after which he can be a free agent.

…while in Nashville, our on-site eyes and ears, Joel Lipsky, talked with Susan Slusser, who covers the A’s for the San Francisco Chronicle, who said that, from what she understands, A’s GM Billy Beane is very prepared to move Dan Haren and Joe Blanton, but that the Mets fit better for blanton…however, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney told joel that the Mets do not fit well for blanton, or haren, because beane is not impressed by Mike Pelfrey and Phil Humber, and he must bring back two, young starting pitchers in a trade

Beane, as recently quoted by USA Today, when asked about Haren and Blanton…

“If somebody offers you everything west of the Mississippi, you have to listen. If Thomas Jefferson didn’t listen to offers, half of the U.S. would be French. Some people thought it was a bad deal at the time, but I think he proved to be right.”

Meanwhile, in his post to SI, Heyman also reports that the Mets are among teams who are pursuing free-agent RHP Freddy Garcia, who will not be able to pitch until June, ‘at the earliest.’

…to be honest, i recall hearing yesterday that the Mets may be the front runners for garcia, but are holding back until they know how best to proceed in the trade market

Lastly, according to MLB.com, citing ‘a source,’ the Nationals may be willing to give Livan Hernandez a two-year deal.

…if you recall, multiple reports over the last week had suggested the Mets were debating whether to sign hernandez…in fact, ESPN.com made another reference to this today…i dig hernandez, but not at more than two years…no way, no how

For the sake of argument, so to try and gauge our collective expectations, if the Mets end up acquiring Blanton or Lowry, while also signing, say, Freddie Garcia or Bartolo Colon to a one-year deal, will you be satisfied with Omar Minaya’s efforts to upgrade his team’s starting rotation?

Should the Mets bring Delgado back on a one-year, incentive-laden deal?

If you sign one of these fatso’s to a one year contract, they’ll make 3 good starts and begin whining about an extension.

  2. genius says:

3rd place. with or without bedard. worse with any of these other schlubs

  3. metsfanspleasestopbeingnegative says:

We should overwhelm Baltimore for Bedard and keep as much of our prospects as possible

would love for our rotation to be

    Bedard
    Pedro
    Maine
    Perez
    +1 to be signed

and move El Duque to the pen

would the Orioles take Pelfrey, Humber, Gotay, Church, Joe Smith & Heilman for Bedard & Bradford (who was crap for them last year) ?

    that would work for me

we’d keep Gomez & F. Martinez that way too

    • Steal Home Jose! says:

Old Saying, they want Quality not Quantity. O’s like Gomez, he will be included in any deal.

    • plummetdown says:

they say you need more of a better package for bedard. so….

i’m sure orioles knows gomez and f.martinez are good. so no trade without them.

everyone else has no trade value.

  4. TheLiability says:

I would love to end up with a Blanton or Lowry and a Cabrera… One inning eater and another Bmore project we can take advantage of….

  5. SurferD says:

How bout we trade for Blanton or Lowry and sign Livan?

  6. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

why has there never been a poll on the milledge trade?

    • JR. says:

I think everyone knows the results of that poll already…

unless church is involved in a deal for santana out of the middle of nowhere…(daydreaming)

  7. whynot says:

If it’s us and the Dodgers, I like our chances a little better. Their prospects are much better than ours, but they seem reluctant to give up a whole lot. They already have a near 1 in Penney, Lowe at 2, and Billingsley as an ace in waiting. Plus, they don’t want to eat any money. Hopefully something,m anything can work to our advantage.

  8. christian warrior says:

I wasn’t always of this position, but I now think that the Mets are best served if they can work a deal for Bedard, (or whomever), without giving up Heilman. At this point, it might be an easier task to finally give Heilman his shot at the rotation and find someone to replace him in the bullpen.

That way we don’t have to stomach watching Colon, Livan, or Carlos Silva.

    Bedard
    Pedro
    Maine
    Perez
    Heilman

That looks pretty strong to me…

    • wannabegm says:

eddie coleman mentioned on the wfan about an hour ago that he thinks Heilman if traded can win near 15 games next year.
I would not be surprised in the least if he does.

    • 1-18-31-7 says:

      heilman should be a SP.

      • wannabegm says:

I don’t think Blanton has anything on Heilman, except poundage. We need to hold our cards. I think there is a significant upside to Pelfrey and I think it is premature to trade him. See John Maine and the Orioles.

  9. TheLiability says:

Please lets not forget Mr. Minaya aquired maine and OPerez for next to nothing. Where would this team be without them?

    • gomets2008 says:

Well said….I also really lke Ryan Church….I bet everyone will be praising Minaya by mid season when Church is killing the ball.

  10. throatneedle says:

what…..no santana 3% chance coming to the mets updates from matt? he must be turning a new leaf!

of the 3 fatsos i’d rather have livan believe it or not. blanton to me is WAY overrated and freddy is crap. bartolo colon is not the answer

  11. metzor says:

I would be satisfied if the Mets got a Joe Blanton + Silva/Colon/Livan. That will mean that maybe we didn’t get an ace, but we’ll have a more solid rotation and most likely didn’t have to leave our farm system a barren wasteland, which is what will happen in order to get Santana/haren/bedard.

    Pedro
    Maine
    Blanton
    Perez
    Silva/Livan/Colon/El Duque

I can live with that if it means we keep most of our prospects, and heilman. Of course we’d love an ace, but so would every other team.

  12. gowrightgo says:

I think we could do alot worse than simply upgrading our back end.

I could actually live with 2 Free Agent pick ups…

    Colon and Silva.

    rotation would be
    Pedro
    Maine
    Perez
    Silva
    Colon

    Duque to the pen
Pelfrey to the pen or in AAA
Humber and Mulvey get a year in AAA

Then in 2008 offseason we are far better off with all our chips (hopefully one of them pan out of the 3 in AAA, Pelf, Humb, Mulv)
plus another good year of Maine and OP

Our starting pitching problem this year was no ace and an injured Duque plus a revolving and terrible 5th starter spot

Well we should have an ace or something close in Pedro.
Moving Duque to the pen eliminates the issues of his durability from a starting pitching perspective and getting Colon and Silva certainly helps for depth and solid back end potential

    • wannabegm says:

I’m more amenable to your plan than trading our prospects.
      Good points.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

im fine wth trading the prospects. the draft this year is supposed to be pretty decent and we have those two picks from atlanta. if omar and crew through around some cash on draft day we couple probably replace those guys we traded.

  13. 1-18-31-7 says:

    church for lowry?

  14. terlis says:

Considering the Giants have interest in Tejada at short, it might be possible that they are trying to work out a three-way deal with them right now:

    Mets get: Bedard, Lowry
O’s get: Gomez, Humber, Pelfry, + player(s) to be named
    Giants get: Tejada, Mulvey, Church

O’s clear some salary, Met’s pick up a portion of Tejada’s salary.

    Thoughts?

    • therealsince86 says:

Obviously I love that but it would take that package just to get Bedard.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

the giants might have to include a prospect to give to the orioles as well + we would probably have to give up more but its an interesting idea.

        • terlis says:

Well, I’m assuming the “player(s) to be named” would include a Giants guy or two.

        • gowrightgo says:

seriously, the giants make out great here. Give up Lowry to get church Mulvey and Tejada. Thats quite a haul for muddling lefty who reminds guys of todays version of tom Glavine

      • will says:

Gomez, Church and the Mets’ top three pitching prospects for Bedard? That’s too much.

Humber and Pelfrey are not that young. One or both of them could pan out for the Mets as soon as this season. If they are really so lightly regarded then I would keep them. With Maine, Pedro and Perez I dont see why the Mets cant try one of them as the fifth starter and and still have the chips to add a good starter.

        • terlis says:

But for Bedard and Lowry? i think that might be enough. Maybe put Collazo in place of Mulvey?

        • will says:

Bedard and Lowry would be sweet and worth a big package. If healthy then the mets would have four young and good pitchers for the next few years. And they will have kept Martinez.

  15. therealsince86 says:

How about a trade with the Angels that increases their chances of landing Cabrerra. I am sure the Marlins would love to have Gomez. So Gomez for E. Santana? Maybe even expand the trade. Mets get Garrett Anderson or Figgins, Kendry Morales and Santana. Angels get Gomez, Delgado and cash.

  16. therealsince86 says:

I am also back to my original thought of salary dumps.
Millwood and Otsuka for Pelfrey and a prospect.

    • christian warrior says:

      That’s a steal.

I would personally pay for the plane tickets if this deal could be struck.

  17. vinluvr says:

I’ve heard that our prospects aren’t worth a sack of cheese doodles, but now I am hearing that we’ve offered gomez, heilman, humber and more for a batard?

this is ridiculous. i would expect that package to net us a nice sourdough round, and perhaps a pound or two of soft-ripened brie. a few olives, a nice bottle of wine, and you can have a pretty good little cocktail party back up in your nashville hotel suite.

  18. stickguy says:

Forget all these convoluted 3 way deals.

These GMs seem incapable of making a simple trade (or even deciding if a guy is available), so how the heck cold they process a 13 player, 3 way extravaganza?

Just get somebody to fill in the open spot. At this point, grab Silva, and work on the pen.

    pedro
    Maine
    Perez
    Duque

They are pretty much set, and if Pedro pitches like he did in December, should be solid to pretty darned good (and better than a lot of teams have, including the Phils)

So, they need 1 guy. Choices are:

    -Ace (bedard? Johan?
-solid 2/3 with upside (Snell type) – Haren, to me, is here. Blanton too
    - mediocre 5 starter (aka “innings eater”) – SIlva being the best FA, or can trade
    - The cheap way, just run out Pelfrey and see what happens.

    So that is adding a 1, 2, 3 or 5.

Even adding Silva, while not giving the rotation of the ages, will be potentially just fine, and should keep the bullpen from falling apart.

Pelfrey would be the understudy for Duque’s vacation.

If 2 guys go down, then you scramble a bit, but everyone would have that problem

If the 2/3 guy costs as much as the #1, it seems kind of pointless.

And the best thing about a silva is, it preserves the prospects for other uses (on the Mets, or future trades), and it creates depth, with Pelfrey as #5.

Oh, even better than SIlva (even though it makes a hole in the pen) is Heilman. Heilman is a much better pitcher than Silva, and I would bet a lot that if you stuck them both in the rotation, that Heilman would significantly out perform Silva.

    Free Aaron Heilman!

    • gowrightgo says:

I like it. Heilman to the rotation , sign Dotel as insurance for the injured Dirty Sanchez, Sign Silva and Move Duque to the pen and you are done.

Rotation of Pedro, Maine OP Heilman and Silva,
Pen of Wagner, Dotel Sanchez Feliciano Smith, Shoe and Duque

Plus all the chips around to mature into either roses or manure (Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey, Guerra, Fmart, Gomez, etc)

Plus 3 picks in the top 36 this year!

  19. k-mets says:

I just read this from rotoworld:

WFAN is reporting on a possible trade of Erik Bedard to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp and Jonathan Broxton.

ESPN is reporting that the two sides are close. It’s a fair return, though we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Orioles hold out for a fairly valuable third piece. Broxton would close in Baltimore, while Kemp would be an option both in center and left.

    http://rotoworld.com/content/home_MLB.aspx

If that is true. Well forgot Ace pitcher. I guess Omar is going to Plan F. Poor moves, then again what did we expect. Others teams haVE BETTER Talents (Prospects)
