Buzz: Nats Shop Kearns, Lopez, like Pelfrey
By D.J. Short - Dec 4, 2007 12:21 am

In a report for MLB.com, citing ‘a baseball source with knowledge of the situation,’ Bill Ladson writes that the Nationals are shopping OF Austin Kearns and infielder Felipe Lopez for starting pitching.

According to Ladson, the Nationals have interest in Mets RHP Mike Pelfrey as well as Twins RHP Kevin Slowey.

In 161 games with the Nationals last season, Kearns hit .266 with 16 HR and 74 RBI.

…come to think of it, the Mets could do far worse than kearns as a hypothetical righty-platoon partner for Ryan Church, as he hit lefties at a .292 clip last season, but you’d think pelfrey could garner more of a return…then again, it would be pretty odd, not to mention frustrating, to see pelfrey, Jesus Flores and Lastings Milledge all playing for Manny Acta with curly w’s on their hats…

Austin Kearns’s ears are too big, I’ll pass on that.

In other news, the Nationals also just picked up Tyler Clippard from the Yankees.

For crissakes, are we down to trading Pelfrey for Kearns? Please no. If Pelfrey isn’t going to develop into a #3 or better starter, fine. But, we need to see more of him before we trade him for that piece of garbage Kearns. The mere suggestion is ridiculous and frightening. Has it come to this?

Exactly, I’d rather gamble on Pelfrey to see if he can become a major league pitcher. If he crashes, then so be it. But I’m not giving that opportunity away for an Austin Kearns.

      Ditto for Millledge and Church/Schneider.

this would really steam my clams.

Other teams pitchers are going for a fortune, but the Mets are supposed to trade their best P prospect, who still has great stuff and plus mechanics (and is big), that really has very little pro experience, for a stiff like Kearns?

Can we not talk to the nationals about anything for like a year or two? That would make me feel better.

  6. Al Kykyoras says:

Pelfrey is the Mets best pitching prospect? Damn they’re in trouble. Many Mets fans want to defend Pelfrey and talk about stuff, but based on what I’ve seen he doesn’t compare to many other “top pitching prospects” that are around baseball.

I’m not crazy about Kearns so I would rather the Mets move Pelfrey for someone else if the opportunity comes along.

If Omar goes for this, he’s a punk.

Are the Mets trying to become the Washington Nationals? Omar Minaya does realize he doesn’t have to do his former team any favors, right?

    • RandomNatsFan says:

Before we were the Nationals, we were Minaya’s Expos. He wrecked our franchise.

Actually, though, Kearns is not bad. Take a peek at his home/away splits. He’s a pretty decent hitter everywhere but RFK, where he hit .250 and he slugs a bunch too.

  9. cver says:

Don’t make me puke. The Nats are gonna have Pelfrey and Milledge and we’re gonna have Schneider, Church and Kearns?!

  10. cver says:

The stupid thing is that if Milledge was on another team and could have gotten him for a bag of balls or even a little more, he would have jumped all over it, but instead it’s in reverse. But then again, there is the factor of Omar so far focusing on who the Mets don’t want (Mota/Lo Duca/Green/Milledge) as opposed to who they do or I should say SHOULD want. Lately it doesn’t seem like he has a clue and I’m so expecting to Hernandez Brothers in Flushing. Very sad.
