Buzz: Santana and Sox are Close
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 4, 2007 5:48 pm

In an update to The Mill for Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll writes that Red Sox attempts to acquire Johan Santana are ‘all but done,’ and will include a package of Jon Lester, ‘a center fielder,’ Justin Masterson and Ryan Kalish.

well, will’s missing center fielder has been the crux of this entire story, in that the Twins want Jacoby Ellsbury plus lester, and the Sox would prefer to trade Coco Crisp, instead, assuming lester is involved…

At any rate, citing ‘a source familiar with the negotiations,’ the Boston Herald writes the Twins have told the Red Sox they want to complete a deal by the end of today.

Additionally, ESPN’s Peter Gammons says that Santana is ‘on the verge’ of being traded, though Kalish is not involved.

RIP My dream of Santana as a Met.

i’d actually prefer someone like blanton just because i feel like we wouldnt have to give up nearly as much

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

blanton = gomez and heilman atleast
bedard/santana/haren = heilman, gomez, church, pelfrey, mulvey ,etc.
the thing is that blanton is a good #3, the other ones are aces or great #2’s

      • jsh2000 says:

the thing is that you don’t necessarily need an ace on the pitching staff

having 4 starters who can be at least decent #2s should be able to get something done

        • wynton says:

I disagree. I think a real ace is important in the playoffs.

On the other hand, having a bunch of number twos is great for the regular season. And I don’t discount the possibility that one so-called number 2 could develop into a number 1.

After all, Maine had 15 wins, despite a pretty big second half slump. Would it really be so shocking to see him win 18-19 games, which is all you really can expect from an “ace.”

        • General Millz says:

In another post I wrote about not needing an “ace,” so to speak, and having a strong rotation overall. I definitely ignored the importance of a Beckett-type when the playoffs come around, but after 2007, I’d like the Mets to make sure they get to that point.

I still think several above average starters is the way to go, rather than an ace followed by four less and less talented pitchers. The Josh Becketts in this world are rare, and even Johan the Great hasn’t been lights out in the post-season.

I’m not completely content with the Mets rotation, but I’d be okay if they added just one starter who’s capable of being a #4 in the bigs. I’d let Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey, El Duque fight for the 5th spot in the rotation, but I have no desire to see Jose Brian Ho Park Lima Lawrence appear in a Mets uniform ever again.

Beane will more likely ask for the moon or the galaxy for Blanton

  3. RespectDaBestRM says:

if its really lester, crisp and 2 prospects, i have a real hard time understanding how the mets couldnt atleast match that offer.

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

tell the twins to choose 2 of these 3 – gomez, church or fmart and then choose 3 of the following – heilman, pelfrey, humber, mulvey, gotay.

thats definately atleast equal to lester crisp and 2 prospects.

  4. therealsandman says:

everyone who is tired of the name Johan Santana reply with an agree

  5. stoney says:

Because we don’t even have a guy that’s as regarded as Lester; and that just sorta sucks. But its the reality of our situation right now

  6. Felix the Cat says:

I’d love to see the Angels snag Santana because then the Dodgers would lose their main competition for Cabrera which could take them out of the Bedard race. Okay, a little wishful thinking maybe……

    • therealsandman says:

id love to see the angels snag santana also because i would not love to see santana/beckett

  7. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

angels use their chips on santana, yankees use their chips on haren, dodgers now alone in cabrera talks get cabrera for slightly less, leaving the door wide open for us to swoop in and get bedard….a guy can dream

  8. Felix the Cat says:

FWIW, wouldn’t a Mets package of Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey, Gomez and Martinez top the Sox package? Not sure I’d want to do it but………….

I’d rather have Bedard anyway because of his contract status.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

id take either one but at this point would you send that package to baltimore for bedard? i dont think i would only bc if ANYONE on the pitching staff gets hurt we’re completely effed.

  9. k-mets says:

I just want Santana deal to be done already so other deals moves fast. I think most pitching trade is on hold to see what Santana gets….

  10. the clap says:

Let’s stick to the ongoing Mets offseason choke.

Boy, let’s hope Omar gets Xavier Nady back. A Nady/Church platoon would be heaven on earth. And why hasn’t Omar signed Antonio Alfonseca yet? He’d fit into the bullpen and clubhouse and AARP meetings like beans on rice.

  11. jgreet says:

Look, I’m disappointed in Omar. Just put Reyes in and add Pelfrey, and you have a deal. Reyes trumps all! He is unanimously the MOST EXCITING player in the game! But when its all said and done, you are a better team with Santana and say Eckstein, rather that Reyes and Pelfrey! I could care less about the whole HOME GROWN thing! I care about one (1) thing…WIN DAMN IT!

  12. mets17 says:

I really like the sound of the Nady/Church Platoon.

  13. stellar says:

And everyone else is waiting for you to stop littering the site with this crap. Keep it between you and him… nobody else cares.
