Buster Olney, of ESPN.com, is reporting that the Red Sox and Twins are coming closer to a deal that would send ace left hander Johan Santana to Boston.
…it’s unclear whether it’s boston or minnesota that has stepped down
from their demands, i.e., is boston including both Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester, or is minnesota settling for just lester plus prospects…either way, maybe this will finally end, and we can all move on…or, not…
…Update…2:40 am…
The Boston Globe’s blog, Extra Bases, writes:
“There had been talk the Red Sox were looking at Santana’s medicals, but that could not be confirmed early this morning when efforts to reach Theo Epstein were unsuccessful.”
…maybe he’s gone undercover in that gorilla suit, again…
…Update…2:57 am…
Ken Rosenthal, at FoxSports.com, says that the Sox continue to refuse to include both Ellsbury and Lester in the same package, but if the Yankees, who remain in negotiations despite their threatened deadline, refuse to include Ian Kennedy or another top prospect along with Philip Hughes and Melky Cabrera, the Twins could decide to settle on Boston’s offer.
…given that they have asked for lester’s medical records, one would assume Coco Crisp will be in this deal, along with minor-league shortstop Jed Lowrie, and a fourth player, perhaps pitching prospect Justin Masterson, whom the Twins are said to covet…
…Update…3:15 am…
From Jayson Stark and Buster Olney:
“If the Twins were satisfied with Lester’s medicals, it’s believed they would accept a swap of him, Coco Crisp, shortstop prospect Jed Lowrie and either highly regarded pitching prospect Justin Masterson or another player. Or if the Twins reversed field and decided they wanted center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury instead, it’s believed that would be a 3-for-1 trade – with only Ellsbury, Masterson and Lowrie going to Minnesota.”
Olney writes that a deal could go down ‘sometime during the early morning hours.’
…so, basically, keep the coffee brewing…
…Update…3:29 am…
Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe writes that the Sox and Twins have called it a night, but with given the medical information swap, a deal ‘appears close,’ and could be done in the morning.
Edes and the Globe believe Boston’s final offer may be Lester, Crisp, Lowrie and Masterson.

Am I the only one still up refreshing this page? haha
na danny im here! waiting for omars nice move!
I think all we can hope for right now is Bedard, and if we can get him and keep one of gomez or fmart thatd be prime
can we stop calling him fmart its really started to sound like some kind of a wholesale discount store and please dont give up heilman
We should just call him F-art
I’ll be up for another hour refreshing this page, to me it’s the best site out giving up-to-the-minute news…for us Mets fans I’d love to see us get at least Bedard. If Santana ends up going to the Red Sox it’ll make me as a Met fan satisfied, I’d hate to see him go to the Yankees n have them get all the attention although if they don’t get Santana I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to get Haren.
In reality, the best thing that could happen for us would be that this santana deal takes at least a few days longer, because once this deal is done the losing team, be it the sox or the yanks, are gonna come swooping down to take whatever pitcher were going after i.e. haren bedard or blanton. And that will make the situation much worse for us to say the least
Danny
I totally agree we have to move quick & perhaps overpay once Johan goed to sox yanks become very desperate but I do not think O’s will deal with yanks unless its an unbelievable deal..
The Orioles won’t trade Bedard to the Yankees period. They’re a division opponent so we have an opportunity…
Haren is the 2nd best option, the Yankees will go after him assuming they still want a #1 pitcher and I wouldn’t be upset with the Red Sox getting Santana, Yankees Haren, and Mets Bedard or Blanton
Now, if the Yankees get Haren & the Mets get nobody but Livan Hernandez I’ll have a problem
True, thats what it seems like will eventually happen. Let’s hope something works out while still having some farm to work with next season (but i doubt we can have both)
The Red Sox are going to be deadly. Or should I say deadlier.
They’re run the right way where they use their money wisely in the market and maintain a farm system where they can go out and bring in top talent when it hits the trade market.
If they somehow hold onto Bucholz and Ellsbury in this deal, that will be some incredible craftsmanship. I thought the money they gave Matsuzaka and the whole Ramirez-Beckett trade were pretty reckless, but I guess it’s hard to argue with the results.
I’d hate to be a team in the American League that’s for sure.
Ellsbury will be an All-Star. Hopefully the BoSox wont have to part with him.
Wow… is that really it for Santana?
If that holds up that is total heist for the red sox… the star has come off Lester quite a bit.. crisp is crisp.. and the other two have lots left to prove…
Not hard to see why Boston is on top if that’s the deal that actually does down.. wow.
