Buzz: Where is Omar
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 4, 2007 3:41 pm

by the way, from what i can gather, nobody has seen Mets GM Omar Minaya walking in the hotel lobby today…all assume, like every other general manager, that he is locked up in meetings, while scrambling for a front-line starting pitcher, again, like every other general manager

    maybe he’s gone AWOL

    • kevin2elster21 says:

locked himself in his room trying to figure out how he’s going to explain that, “we’re getting a frontline pitcher” line.

      • dannyb says:

On a hunger strike because the Mets he asked the Mets to extend his contract and they only extended the finger?

  2. therealsandman says:

i think omar just realized we need an ace

  3. MetFanInVegas says:

    lol that’s my bet

  4. rogasm says:

You guys sure he’s not talking with Theo about a Milledge for Mann…oh wait, that was two years ago. Sorry…no clue where he is now.

  5. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

he missed his wake up call this morning didnt he

  6. a817 says:

    3:34 p.m., from Buster Olney
    • The Blue Jays continue to talk with the Orioles about left-hander Erik Bedard. Toronto probably has the young pitching to anchor a deal.

    bedard is not gone yet…

  7. k-mets says:

that is good that he woke up..which might be the chance

  8. PereztoHeilmantoWagner says:

He is probably updating his resume for when he gets fired this year…

    He infuriates me right now.

Get ready for the Orlando/Livan Hernandez brother’s reuinted story…

This offseason is becoming nothing short of a NIGHTMARE.

    • Peter says:

      Step in from the ledge.

A nightmare is an injury to Wright or Reyes, a Pedro setback, arm trouble for Perez or Maine.

Not getting the big fish doesn’t kill us, we’re still looking at close to a 90 win team with just tinkering.

Sometimes the trade you don’t make is better than the one you do make, ya know?

      • Cactus says:

90 wins with this team? fat chance.

        • Peter says:

          With tinkering.

Pedro, Maine, Perez is still a solid base for a staff. Pelfrey, Colon, Silva, Livan, El Duque or a #3 with upside we haven’t heard of yet will keep us conpetitive.

          Reyes
          Castillo
          Wright
          BelTRON
          Alou
          Delgado
          Church
          Schnieder

That’s still a darn good lineup. The Red Sox? No, but nobody is.

      • kevin2elster21 says:

“Sometimes the trade you don’t make is better than the one you do make, ya know?”

Actually, we’re not choosing to stay pat, we’re being forced to. But same effect either way.

As for the rest of your post: agreed, it’s not like these aces are going to the Braves or Phillies.

We had 88 wins in a season where we didn’t look very good. What was our longest winning streak? 5 games, once.

Keeping Alou & Pedro healthy, with a bounce back by Delgado in his walk year, we should be okay.

Just tinker with the bullpen a little and hope our kids progress. One out of that pathetic group has got to be a decent contributing major leaguer right?

  9. cyclone says:

Omar has locked up the room in his suite and decided to watch whatever’s playing on the Spice channel…

  10. caitmo says:

Guys, you know. C’mon, you know, Omar has been speaking to Willie and you know, Willie’s gut has convinced Omar to just ride it out with their guys. So you know, we’re going to go into 2008 with our young guys and it’ll be exciting to watch them come into their own.

    • kevin2elster21 says:

I counted 4 ‘you knows’ is this Jose Reyes?

      • dannyb says:

I got sick of listening to Willie calmly say “…I have faith in my guys. These are my guys. My guys have always responded.”

I wanted to jump into the TV and clothesline him, press him over my head, give him the big splash, turn him over and pin him for the Intercontinental belt…all this, with face paint on and strings hanging from my arms.

The whole time thinking…is this guy nuts?!?!?!?!

  11. stoney says:

crying in his hotel room =(

  12. ravi3 says:

Apparently the Angels are deep in talks with Florida r ight now, as per Gammons…that would be one less competitor for Bedard…I’m not sure why Baltimore is talking to the Blue Jays right now…you wouldnt want to deal a guy like him within the division, right?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

You wouldn’t, unless you really, really like what you get back. I don’t think empowering a third division contender is a good idea, but hey, he pitches against the Red Sox and Yankees, too. Foster parity.

My major fear here is that ownership panics and orders Omar to see what Reyes can fetch. I’m not saying it’s likely, but it’s not impossible, and that’s frightening. You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, etc.

  13. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Better be making a F*&*&(&*((*&(&*(&*(*&ing deal for Bedard.

  14. indigo394 says:

Talking to Isiah about Stephon Marbury.

  15. Number41 says:

He’s drinkin’ El Presiente’s in his room and dreaming of the Expos…

  16. ghobot says:

    this trade market is insane,

    • metsmygod says:

      you’re right, it is insane..

these teams are raping us for young players

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I say rape away if we get Erik Bedard and keep one of Martinez or Gomez.

        • kevin2elster21 says:

Again, market stinks, but I’m ok with these prospects leaving. I like FMart the best b/c he’s the only player I haven’t seen. hahahaha

  17. Number41 says:

    El Presidente’s

  18. gomets2008 says:

We should only hope Minaya is logged in here , and reading our words & opinions….maybe then he will get on the ball and try to get some solid pitching so we wont all be upset by friday when all the top 3 are traded and we are stuck with the unwanted young guns…Cmon Omar !!! Juuu know what Im saying!!!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

I hope he isn’t, because all of the racially charged insults and junior high humor would probably keep him away for good.

  19. Blue_n_Orange says:

Dude, didn’t you hear? We’re already a better team today than we were last year. Consider me satisfied!

    • kevin2elster21 says:

In a sense, we are. We will, knock on wood, have Pedro for a full season instead of Glavine. That not only gives us an extra 3-4 wins, but we will have a chance in an additional 6-10 games.

  20. reyes789 says:

    looking for more trade lube

  21. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

The Mutts, the laughingstock of baseball

    • gomets2008 says:

Its always gonna be like that…..Does any1 else notice on about 90% of the highlights for pitchers and players in trade talks or free agency..ESPN always shows them King a Met or hitting a shot over a Mets head?? waddup wit dat yo? lol

  22. JefJarrett says:

Having been to this facility for a conference of my own…….

The hotel is HUGE….its like a frigging biosphere…..it has a river w/ boats inside for crying out loud. It’s also a huge ripoff being in the middle of tourist trap Opryland away from civilization…but I digress…

He could just be on another side of the hotel and you would think he wasn’t ever at the meeting.

  23. PereztoHeilmantoWagner says:

He is focusing on the important things, like trying to get a 28 year old AA player for Estrada…

  24. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

if you have young talent and the best you can get is a .220 hitting catcher and a fourth outfielder than you don’t the make the trade

but you only do that if all you care about is putting out a medicore team that may give the appearance of being competitive but won’t make it to the dance

remember, all freddie coupon has ever said he wanted is “meaningful” games in september.. he never said anything about winning them, much less playing into october.

the mets only care about the real estate prospects generated by the new stadium and their awful tv channel

    • kevin2elster21 says:

if you have young talent and the best you can get is a .220 hitting catcher and a fourth outfielder than you don’t the make the trade

can we tattoo that on omar’s forehead?

  25. metsfanatic says:

    Crossdressing with Maine.

  26. gomets2008 says:

Can we skip this seasonand just give Boston the title ..and start going after the 09 Pitching free agents?? please ??

    1 down –
According to ESPN’s Peter Gammons, the Red Sox and Twins are close to finalizing a Johan Santana trade after Boston added Ryan Kalish to the mix.

Gammons says it’d be a 5-for-1, and with Kalish in the deal, it only makes sense that the Twins would be taking Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson. If Jacoby Ellsbury was involved, the Twins probably wouldn’t be asking for the additional center field prospect. Like Lowrie and Masterson, Kalish ranks comfortably among Boston’s top 10 prospects. He is much further away from the majors than the others. Dec. 4 – 3:47 pm et

  27. firemetmanagement says:

He is probably in the G**dd*mnn Dominican Republic

  28. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

    Wilpons Sell… Wilpons Sell

remember, if it wasn’t for Doubleday, piazza never would have been a Met

  29. caitmo says:

Trade Reyes for Bedard Melvin Mora and Tejada. Mora can play RF, Tejada SS until Tejada retires then move mora back to SS. SCREW REYES AND HIS REGGAETOWN CLOWN ASS.

  30. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

the anger that’s been building the past few weeks from the fan base is a bit frightening. if the mets get off to an ugly start, and i think they will, they may want to start tearing shea down during the all-star break

  31. a817 says:

    REGGAETOWN… lol

  32. caitmo says:

Lol Reggaetown, Reggaeton, Reggaetone, it’s all the same crap. Reyes is more concerned partying and hitting on young white chicks with Castillo than he is in winning the pennant, get rid of em!!

  33. MrBotch says:

I just hope hes doing somethin… even if he dont get the big ace, that bullpen needs some work……

  34. a817 says:

mahay and hawkins are available… sign em

    • dannyb says:

Mahay and Hawkins obviously want to be Yankees. Wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t anyone in their right mind?

That’s what a Yanks fan would tell you anyway.

(Figured I would throw a little Yankee bashing out there to foster a bit of solidarity)

  35. eddiekrules says:

what is intriguing to me is that when he has pulled a deal this offseason, we haven’t heard about it until after it has happened. So just maybe he is working on something we don’t know about. Either way, it looks like you need to empty the cupboard for a true #1 so maybe a couple of #3’s and another big bat could still win the NL. Score enough runs to make the playoffs and then anything can happen.

  36. gowrightgo says:

The Rabbit is on his way.

    2 things…

    1) Omar knows trading away Humber or Pelfrey and not getting back an ace is disastrous for us. Not because of what they are right now but because of the possibility that the light goes on and they develop into additional Kazmirs. HE WONT REPEAT THAT MISTAKE. He trades them only for a top quality guy or no one.

    2) Omar knows the competition at the high end of the trade for pitching market is really hot right now. I think he is already moving into the next tier of guy. Think reclamation project with power arm type (Daniel Cabrera…Ervin Santana type)

I think we should expect something unexpected because of the reality our best pitching prospects are not good enough to get us an ace and we can not repeat the mistake of trading out or best pitching prospects for guys who are not aces and run the risk that our traded prospects develop into stars (low probability but huge problem if it happens)

  37. Philnym31 says:

“One of the recurring themes of this offseason has been teams’ floating the names of all kinds of pitchers you’d never think they’d trade, just to see what sort of response they get. Well, here’s another one: Pittsburgh’s Ian Snell. Teams that have talked to the Pirates say they’re in the midst of a monstrous internal debate about whether they’d be willing to at least dangle Snell, a major 26-year-old talent who had more quality starts this year (22) than Santana or Roy Oswalt and a better strikeout rate (7.66 per 9 innings) than Carlos Zambrano or Ben Sheets.” – Jayson Stark on November 21, 2007

    Make it happen Omar.

    • huge_mets_fan11 says:

I think our last chance to get an ace is Sheets or Snell, if not then do not give up the farm for anyone else.

  38. Cactus says:

Omar is hiding away, preparing how best to say, “we are happy with the team as it is constructed.” Just like last year when he failed to get a pitcher.

And isn’t last year’s failure to get a starter really the bigger problem here? Besides being something that would have got them into the playoffs in ‘07, they’d already have that guy to go for next season, whether it be Zito, Matsuzaka, Lilly, Meche, whoever.

Three years now with a pitching staff with holes that couldn’t be patched. Forget his other mistakes, for that alone Omar should be fired.

    • NYMBosco says:

Agreed. Omar has failed miserably……Starting pitching has been a constant problem with patch work over the last few years………

    • hyperion4 says:

Then so should Brian Cashman and John Schuerholz.

  39. ugbmets21 says:

hey can we get an update on what and where the hell omar is?

our biggest transaction will not be signing castillo back…Trust me!

THE METS FRONT OFFICE ARE IN A MEETING RIGHT NOW MAKING UP A NEW PLAN.

i can see them getting a # 3 starting pitcher via trade or free agents and getting a RP, Possibly CHAD CORDERO in a trade!

would that be such a bad thing???
i like Omar, but ur not the expos and we sure as hell are not there fans. he cant possibly think he can mind warp us into believing this team is better??????? CAN HE?????

  40. genius says:

are you kidding? of course he is taking his annual siesta!

  41. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

I’d keep an eye out for a Nady/Ian Snell trade for Mets’ prospects.

  42. stickguy says:

Man, this is an ugly crowd.

Trying for the glass half full…

This is still a good team, one of the better ones in the league. It took a ridiculous set of circumstances (not likely repeatable) for them to miss 90 wins in the division.

ANd they aren’t any worse, maybe better.

Pedro, assuming Sept. proved he was OK, is better than Glavine. And Pelfrey is better than last April’s model.

Maine and Perez have another year under their belts, and are at the age where SPs usually make the next leap. Se Bedard at the same point!

Duque is Duque, hopefully they fixed some problems.

So, the rotation is not a disaster, and not worthy of a 70 win team.

The offense should be OK. Of course, # games for ALou and which Delgado you get are important.

Church + (Nady?) will be better than Green.
Castillo over Valentin is a +
Schneider + more Castro s/b better than Loduca

THe Pen? Well, Mota and Sele are gone, so it has to be better!

So yes, this is a 90 +/- win team.

The phils did not get better, unless Lidge becomes dominant again. Even then, they have holes.

The rotation? Myers and Hamels are good to very good. Then what? Eaton, Moyer and a rookie (forget that kids name. Not great stuff, but looked poised).

That is a big drop off from 2-3.,

    THe Mets might have 2 2s and 2 3s. They have 2 2s, 2 5s and a 9.

The Braves? Not really sure what the heck they are doing, but again, 1-2 are good (although aged and injury risks). 3 is Glavine, and we couldn’t wait to dump him. So again, 2 2s, 3 5s?

The teams on the field are differnt, but probably compatible to each other.

Not sure if any of the pens are any good.

so any one of these teams could win 85 of 95, depending on how things break.

  43. dannyb says:

I gotta say, the racial stuff is a little much right now fellas. Time to cool it with that. I know everyone is just having fun, but no need to say ignorant ish like that.

If you don’t like Omar, there are better ways to say it. I’m a supporter, but whatever. He is doing the best with the hand we’ve been dealt. If it was upto him, our chips would be blue chips right now. The rest of the league doesn’t see them that way, so what do you do? You keep those guys in the bigs next year and say eff you to every other gm and scout next year when they succeed. Like he should have done with Milledge, but we’ll save that argument for another day.

  44. hyperion4 says:

It’s kind of a drag that guys like Jim Duquette and Dave Littlefield don’t hold GMs anymore. There aren’t that many fools left who will be suckered into deals that are good for us.

  45. hsimms says:

I hope Omar is missing because he’s working out a deal with Kuroda’s agent. An inning eater to replace Glavine. Just what the doctor ordered. We keep the farm. Hopefully pick well with 3 picks before the second round next June. Deal from strength next year.

  46. Soma. says:

    Soma….

Soma cube. Tempra soma. Soma without prescription. Soma. Watson soma. Drug soma cause any sexual side effects. Soma online….

  47. Buy rohypnol….

Buy rohypnol. Where to buy rohypnol….

  48. gomets2008 says:

Lmao…all jokes aside…cmon guys ..we are all di hard Mets fans I assume..so we know that some trade for a pitcher ..maybe not a #1 or #2 , but some decnt arm is going to take place tonight or tomorrow..Omar will not just sit still …so no one panic just this second…..I am sure we will be acquiring an arm or 2 by this Friday (fingers crossed)

  49. mkochka says:

hahahaha! unfortunately this is more likely than “meeting with O’s officials ironing out the details on a trade for bedard”

  50. liman73 says:

Or trading “Ryan Church” straight up for “Ryan’ Iglesia”

  51. gomets2008 says:

    *die hard Met’s fans

  52. Blue_n_Orange says:

Yeah, I think the Mets might be able to land AJ Burnett, Ian Snell or someone like that. I wouldn’t mind that.

  53. Joebaby says:

    *die hard Mets’ fans.

  54. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

you’re right, sny is better than Yes

  55. Number41 says:

my only issue is the Jeter commercials; what is that, a cake on his head?

  56. kevin2elster21 says:

    NOT EVEN CLOSE

sny does stories on mets fans

yes does stories on how legendary the yankees players are. oh, and do they lobotomize all the people there?

  57. kevin2elster21 says:

I guess arriba arriba is out too then?

  58. caitmo says:

I’ll gladly cut the jokes when Omar stops being the rascist demon that he is.
