Buzz: Yanks Out, Angels in on Santana
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 4, 2007 3:23 pm

According to Jayson Stark at ESPN.com, the Yankees and Twins have not talked about Johan Santana today, ‘amid increasing indications Santana is going to be dealt to Boston.’

Stark writes that the Twins have recently talked with the Angels.

In a report for the Providence Journal, Sean McAdam’s writes that the Twins and Angels have recently discussed Santana, who will be asked to part with at least Jared Weaver, and possibly Brandon Wood.

Update3:31 pm

Earlier today, in the Palm Beach Post, Joe Capozzi wrote that the Angels have backed off trying to acquire Miguel Cabrera, since they refuse to part with two of Howie Kendrick, Jeff Mathis and Nick Adenhart.

Of course, in an update to ESPN.com, Peter Gammons writes that the Angels remain ‘serious’ about acquiring Cabrera and expect to part with all three prospects, plus a fourth.

…nevertheless, if the Angels do not get cabrera, and if a deal for santana cannot be worked out, they’ll just take this same package to the O’s for Erik Bedard, assuming he is still available

Update3:35 pm

According to ESPN, the Red Sox have given the Twins a choice of two offers in exchange for Santana.

However, the Star-Ledger from New Jersey writes that the Twins have yet to respond to either of Boston’s proposal.

Update3:47 pm

The Twins and Red Sox are getting ‘closer’ to finalizing a trade for Santana, writes Peter Gammons at ESPN.com.

so what I’m hearing is, everybody has a shot at Santana except for the Mets! =(

  2. firemetmanagement says:

Fire Minaya, I am so sick of this sh***t. He has destroyed the farm system over the years, and killed the value of any real propects we had to begin with.

The collapse was only the beginning of the despair.

I’m done with this mickey mouse franchise

*phew* one less person wearing a Yankees cap at Shea next season.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

you know, it’s one thing to be disheartened by the collapse, but what’s going on now is not sport. This is just guys in suits making business decisions. We can be disappointed if one of our favorite players is traded, etc., but come on. . . .

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Yeah — TRADE WRIGHT FOR HAREN!!!

DO IT, OMAR!!! ENOUGH MICKEY MOUSE! I FEEL LEFT OUT!!! Wright, Reyes and Maine for Santana!!! DO IT!!!!

We. Have. No. One. To. Trade.

If we did, say, a young, phenom starter, we probably wouldn’t want to trade him.

    • darkstar73 says:

idle threats, thats all it is, you’re too weak to leave and not strong enough to stand by your team, pathetic.

    • Peter says:

Don’t fook with Mickey Mouse, they have a model organization!!!!

    • cyclone says:

      Get lost…

  3. firemetmanagement says:

If Bedard is truly gone, then the only way Minaya can save his job, in my opinion, is to somehow get Santana. Just give up the farm.

    • blevine77 says:

      I thought you were “done”?

      Back so soon?

    • chrisfrombklyn says:

No Santana, No Bedard, the A’s guys are goin to Ariz and LA and everywhere but the Mets……..great. We’ll get Livan Hernandez. Oh joy.
firemetmanagement is right. I’m this close to jumpin.

  4. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

minaya is not gonna trade for anyone good, and unfortunately this will lead to him panicing and overpaying for carlos silva (think 4 yrs 48) and hoping we can scratch and claw our way into the playoffs so he gets his extension.

  5. chrisfrombklyn says:

If nobody is knockin on Omar’s door for a deal, I guess the league is not as high on the Mets’ prospects as we are. Maybe they remember the hype surrounding David West and Alex Ochoa.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

      And that Wright guy sucked.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

youd think developing heilman wright reyes and even to an extent kazmir in the past couple of years would give our farm system credibility. guess not.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I’m sure it has a lot more to do with scouting of the specific players than the systems they come from. Obviously, Braves pitching prospects used to have a certain mystique (no longer), but otherwise, teams have their own scouts, and trust them. Or guys just aren’t ready, and those that might be were set back by injuries (Humber) or spotty performance (Pelfrey). Either way, we win or lose with these guys. Give Gomez all year in AAA. Give F-Mart another year in AA. Give Pelfrey and Humber a chance in ST. Then, next year, we either have something to deal or something to hold onto. In the meantime, do whatever you can to improve the farm system. Hire successful coaches, special instructors, etc. Double the US scouting budget. $1M spent there probably goes much further than $1M to a middle-range starter with a weight problem.

I’m just saying, maybe the other gm’s don’t love our young prospects. How many times have we been given a Butch Huskey and been promised a JoseReyes?

      • kevin2elster21 says:

Wright was real deal from day one. No retahd can deny that. Wait, Omar tried to trade him right?

  6. franco45 says:

To me, Weaver and Wood is at least twice as good as what the Red Sox are offering.

  7. Giaco says:

guys relax… imagine being a Twins fan right now… or even worse.. an oriole fan… yikes… we have it made compared to them

  8. Tidewater says:

Doesn’t this all just tell us that we need to pick smart with our three pre-second round draft picks this summer. Screw “slot.” Get the best damn amateurs we can, sign them and build back that farm!!!

  9. gowrightgo says:

CAn there be any value in the pieces all falling and seeing what is left….

I mean take a look at it this way….the main players for pitching (acquiring it that is) are the Yankees, Sox, Dodgers and Angels plus us.

There are a few big time pitchers being shopped.

    1) Santana
    2) Bedard
    3) Haren
and a few lesser guys being shopped
    4) Blanton
    5) AJ Burnett
    6) Cliff Lee
    7) Lowry
    8) possibly Lincecum
    9) Vasquez

My guess is that it would not be all bad to lose out on the big fish and simply make some hay with less suitors around on the lesser talent. Its not an ace but getting Burnett or Lowry or Vasquez certainly helps to secure the bottom or the rotation and possibly a bit more than that.

I find it strange that the new offer from Bosox to sweeten the pot includes Kalish, who is just in low A-ball, as such a great deal…
Lowrie is not what he’s hyped to be and Crisp is a joke, only real pieces being offered are Lester and Mathison…
