I find it strange that the new offer from Bosox to sweeten the pot includes Kalish, who is just in low A-ball, as such a great deal...
Lowrie is not what he's hyped to be and Crisp is a joke, only real pieces being offered are Lester and Mathison...

CAn there be any value in the pieces all falling and seeing what is left....

I mean take a look at it this way....the main players for pitching (acquiring it that is) are the Yankees, Sox, Dodgers and Angels plus us.

There are a few big time pitchers being shopped.

1) Santana
2) Bedard
3) Haren
and a few lesser guys being shopped
4) Blanton
5) AJ Burnett
6) Cliff Lee
7) Lowry
8) possibly Lincecum
9) Vasquez

My guess is that it would not be all bad to lose out on the big fish and simply make some hay with less suitors around on the lesser talent. Its not an ace but getting Burnett or Lowry or Vasquez certainly helps to secure the bottom or the rotation and possibly a bit more than that.

Doesn't this all just tell us that we need to pick smart with our three pre-second round draft picks this summer. Screw "slot." Get the best damn amateurs we can, sign them and build back that farm!!!

I'm sure it has a lot more to do with scouting of the specific players than the systems they come from. Obviously, Braves pitching prospects used to have a certain mystique (no longer), but otherwise, teams have their own scouts, and trust them. Or guys just aren't ready, and those that might be were set back by injuries (Humber) or spotty performance (Pelfrey). Either way, we win or lose with these guys. Give Gomez all year in AAA. Give F-Mart another year in AA. Give Pelfrey and Humber a chance in ST. Then, next year, we either have something to deal or something to hold onto. In the meantime, do whatever you can to improve the farm system. Hire successful coaches, special instructors, etc. Double the US scouting budget. $1M spent there probably goes much further than $1M to a middle-range starter with a weight problem.

I'm just saying, maybe the other gm's don't love our young prospects. How many times have we been given a Butch Huskey and been promised a JoseReyes?
