According to the Associated Press, Jake Peavy has officially agreed to a three-year, $52 million contract extension with the Padres.
…in other words, peavy will earn roughly $90 million over the next six seasons, which is right on par with his contemporaries…
…at this rate, i will not be shocked if the Mets ask me to pitch for them next season, as i could end up being their best bet…
In a recent update to ESPN.com, citing ‘officials with two clubs,’ Jayson Stark describes the Mets as ‘in trouble,’ with regards to their effort to deal for a starting pitcher.
According to Stark, it is ‘believed’ that the Mets have yet to talk with the A’s or Orioles while in Nashville, adding…
“And there are indications that they aren’t as interested in free agents Livan Hernandez or Carlos Silva as they’ve been portrayed to be, either.”
Earlier today, also at ESPN.com, Amy Nelson wrote that the Orioles and Dodgers ‘may be close on a deal’ that will send LHP Erik Bedard to Los Angeles in exchange for OF Matt Kemp and RHP Jonathan Broxton.
However, Los Angeles beat-reporter Tony Jackson writes to his blog, for the Daily News, “I find that hard to believe, mostly that the Dodgers would part with Broxton at a time when they are about to enter the season with a 38-year-old closer, but I’m running it down anyway.”
Additionally, at his blog for MLB.com, Jim Molony says, “Though the Dodgers are interested in Bedard, it is unlikely they would create holes at two important slots - starting right fielder and setup man - to get him.”
Lastly, during a recent on-air spot for ESPN News, Peter Gammons also mentioned that talks between the Dodgers and O’s regarding Bedard are untrue, which is awkward, because his own colleague is the one who started this.
Gammons also said that the Tigers will be unwilling to trade both Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller in a deal for Bedard.
According to MLB.com, the Tigers and Marlins are ‘hammering out the final details’ on an eight-player trade that will send 3B Miguel Cabrera and LHP Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for a LHP Andrew Miller, OF Cameron Maybin and four other prospects.
ESPN’s Buster Olney and Peter Gammons are reporting the same information on ESPN News.
…Update…6:25 pm…
Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports is reporting that the two sides have reached ‘a preliminary agreement.’
…Update…6:43 pm…
According to Peter Gammons at ESPN, the deal is official and will send Cabrera and Willis to Detrit for Maybin, Miller, C Mike Rabelo and three other prospects.
…Update…7:14 pm…
The Marlins will also get Burke Badenhop, Eulogio de la Cruz, and Dallas Trahern, writes the Detroit Free Press.
Tagged Miguel Cabrera |…from what i can gather, Mets GM Omar Minaya will speak to the New York media around 7:30 pm EDT…as i said yesterday, this is not to say he will have news, though it would be nice if he did…instead, this will probably just be another mid-day briefing…
Tagged Omar Minaya |In an update to The Mill for Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll writes that Red Sox attempts to acquire Johan Santana are ‘all but done,’ and will include a package of Jon Lester, ‘a center fielder,’ Justin Masterson and Ryan Kalish.
…well, will’s missing center fielder has been the crux of this entire story, in that the Twins want Jacoby Ellsbury plus lester, and the Sox would prefer to trade Coco Crisp, instead, assuming lester is involved…
At any rate, citing ‘a source familiar with the negotiations,’ the Boston Herald writes the Twins have told the Red Sox they want to complete a deal by the end of today.
Additionally, ESPN’s Peter Gammons says that Santana is ‘on the verge’ of being traded, though Kalish is not involved.
…there is more and more buzz coming from Nashville suggesting that the Mets are seriously considering Livan Hernandez…
Earlier today, citing ‘a source,’ MLB.com reported that the Nationals may be willing to give Hernandez a two-year deal.
…if you recall, multiple reports over the last week had suggested the Mets were debating whether to sign hernandez…in fact, ESPN.com made another reference to this today…i dig hernandez, but not at more than two years…no way, no how…
Hernandez, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux are the only major-league pitchers to make 30 or more starts in each of the past 10 seasons. However, Hernandez’s total innings-pitched has dropped during each of the last four years.
…as i have mentioned before, the buzz in baseball, for a while now, has been that livan and his brother, Orlando Hernandez, would like to be on the same team, hoping to reunite before one or both of them retires…
For what it’s worth, Orlando is a free agent after next season.
During a recent on-air spot for ESPN News, Peter Gammons said that reports of a
fifth player being offered by Boston to the Twins for Johan Sanatan are ‘untrue.’
The thing is, an hour earlier, in a post to ESPN.com, Gammons wrote that the Red Sox have ‘sweetened their offer’ for Santana, by ‘adding a fifth player to the trade proposal.’
…buckle in, folks, it’s that time of year…
…thanks to gene m for the link…
During his spot with WFAN, SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the O’s have requested at least Matt Kemp, James Loney or Andy LaRoche plus
Jonathan Broxton, in exchange for Erik Bedard.
According to Heyman, though, O’s VP Andy MacPhail is, ‘methodical,’ and ‘will not jump in to things quickly.’
Nevertheless, Heyman says the Mets have told MacPhail they will do whatever is necessary to acquire Bedard, short of trading David Wright and Jose Reyes.
The problem, as Heyman sees it, is that the Mets, as well as other teams, are unable to compete with the Dodgers, who have the best collection of prospects in baseball. Especially since the Mets are shopping minor leaguers, notes Heyman, while other teams are shopping young players who have proven themselves at the major-league level, such as Kemp, who most people believe could be another Dave Winfield.
To listen to Heyman’s entire interview, during which he also discusses Anaheim’s pursuit of Miguel Cabrera; the state of Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, who he believes are untouchable; talks between the Red Sox, Yankees and Twins regarding Johan Santana; and the market for Dan Haren, who could get moved in ‘two days, two weeks or two months,’ go to WFAN.com.
According to MLB.com, free-agent Japanese RHP Hiroki Kuroda could sign with the first team to offer him a four-year deal.
Street writes that the Mariners, Mets, Dodgers and D’Backs are all offering him three years and $30 million.
According to a recent report from Yahoo! Japan, Kuroda is believed to be seeking a four-year, $45 million contract.
Earlier today, in an article for the New York Post, citing ‘one person with knowledge of the team’s thinking,’ Mark Hale reported that the Mets have ‘legitimate interest’ Kuroda, who is drawing interest from eight to 10 teams.
According to Hale’s report, the Mets advanced to Round 2 of the bidding process.’

…by the way, from what i can gather, nobody has seen Mets GM Omar Minaya walking in the hotel lobby today…all assume, like every other general manager, that he is locked up in meetings, while scrambling for a front-line starting pitcher, again, like every other general manager…
