Blog: Level of Interest in Santana
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 5, 2007 7:45 pm

In a quick update to his blog for the Star-Tribune, Minnesota columnist La Velle E. Neal III categorizes the following teams, with regards to their level of involvement with the Twins over Johan Santana:

  • Mets: Interested
  • Yankees: Still interested
  • Angels: Not Interested, but have talked to Twins about other players. Twins keep hearing that the Angels MIGHT change their minds on Santana.
  • Boston: Still interested
  • Texas: Interested, but would Santana go there?
  • Seattle: Interested, but would Santana go there?

…by the way, La Velle E. Neal III has got to be one of the greatest names in baseball…well done, ma and pa neil

what’s the difference between the mets’ “interested” and the yanks and sox “still interested”. when were we not interested?

  2. PeterDragon says:

The twins will also talk “Perez” instead of JOSE~!!!!!

  3. skip says:

You guys should read the comments from the Twin fans on Neal’s blog. Their fans are more frustrated than we are.

  4. skip says:

How about this? If we have to give up Perez to get Santana, then get on the phone to Detroit and talk about the Dontrelle/Pudge package that has been mentioned. Front Four of Santana, Pedro, Maine, Dontrelle and whomever is left standing. Pretty darn good…

I wouldn’t miss OP for a second. It’s an absolutely no brainer.

Omar would truly redeem himself. Picked up OP off the trash heep and turned him into the best pitcher of a generation.

    • Hellbelly says:

……there’s every reason to believe that Dontrelle may be shot…..and Pudge (he of the .294 on-base-percentage and 9 walks and steroid relationship) is worse than shot.

      Get Santana.

Santana, Pedro and Maine and there’s little reason to pray for rain.

  5. Achilles400 says:

Hankenstein says they neve close the door on anything. Ian Kennedy, pack your bags, you’ll be taking a ride with Hughes and Melky.

  6. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I still think that this is a ploy for Bedard.

  7. TenTonHammer says:

“I’d much rather have D-train than Santana.”

    Nice.

  8. Number41 says:

    bartender, I’ll have a double…

Boy, January is going to be a painful month around here. Baseball junkies are like any other junkies. Just need the fix.

Brother can you spare a rumor?

  9. tres says:

I think all Dontrelle needs is a change of scenery to regain his Cy Young-calibre mojo. He’s gonna be a beats here or in Detroit. And we all know how much he loves to pitch (and hit) at Shea.

    • Number41 says:

there will be a big statue of him patting a kid on the head, out front of citifield
there won’t be a dry eye in the house.

  11. blow me says:

i didnt see my name on homey’s list…

blow me: still interested in johanus maximus

  12. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Can we focus on Bedard, please?

I think we have no shot at Santana without Perez or Reyes. I will never give up either.

We are still in the realm of possibility for Bedard. Considering the brilliant year he had coupled with injury risks and the fact that he won’t be an Oriole for the long term.

The Mariners are our competition? So be it.

Let them offer Clement and Morrow. They don’t have the outfield guys to offer Jones, and certainly not the lineup. Even if they do, we can certainly compete.

With the O’s, they don’t have to build for 2008. They already have a losing team setup for that. Right now, it’s about the talent involved in a deal. Our talks with Santana are pressuring MacPhail. He’s going to make a deal with Bedard’s value at its possible peak. I’m sure he knows that he is building this team for 2009, not 2008.

If the M’s don’t get a right fielder, well then consider them out of it.

We need to offer Martinez/Gomez, Heilman, Pelfrey, Humber & Gotay when everyone is focus on Santana.

I pray to God that Minaya doesn’t go back on his word…

  13. MetsFan21 says:

If the Twins want to start with Oliver Perez as the center piece for Santana… I’d do it!! I wouldn’t think twice!

  14. skip says:

Perez, Gomez, Heilman and Gotay for Santana, then Schneider and Pelfrey for Dontrelle and Pudge.

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

How in the world does Schneider and Pelfrey get Willis and Rodriguez?

And why trade Perez, Heilman and Gotay for Santana?

Perez could easily be just as good as Santana. He was in 2004, and was certainly great this year, aside from fielding and reacting off of 2 out errors…

  15. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

    Matt:

Do you know how set the Mariners are to trade Clement?

He definitely has more value to them than any other team…

    And compare these offers:

Fernando Martinez, Aaron Heilman, Mike Pelfrey for Erik Bedard
Jeff Clement, Brandon Morrow, Adam Jones for Erik Bedard.

    Background info:

Jeff Clement would be an interesting acquisition for the O’s. An MLB ready catcher who hits for power. #47 on Baseball American’s top prospect list, hit 20 HRs with a .275 average last year. However, they already have a catcher about a year away in Matt Wieters. Someone who has more value to them than any other team.

Brandon Morrow was a college pitcher who moved up the system in a year to become a reliever. Many consider him anywhere from Kevin Mulvey to Ian Kennedy. Worked entirely from the Mariners bullpen and posted a 4.12 ERA in 63 innings, striking out 66 batters and walking 50.

Adam Jones could be the best of the Mariners’ bunch. He has been nothing short of amazing in his 4 years in the Mariners system. A guy who hits for pop and average in the minors, but has shown less promising major league stints than Carlos Gomez or Lastings Milledge in their first years. 21 years old and on their roster as a starter.

Fernando Martinez seems to only get more hyped no matter how his performance is. The youngest by 1 year in AA, and with Clayton Kershaw probably moving on, Martinez may still be the youngest guy in AA. He didn’t do bad or well in AA, posting .271/.336/.377. Although very young, he has posted the same average and OBP in single-A and double-A, and is #17 on Baseball America’s top prospect list. Is expected to be like Matt Kemp without all the stolen bags. His inclusion may be key. While the O’s have no problems with catching prospects, they may want a good power hitting corner outfield to couple with Nick Markakis.

Aaron Heilman is a great setup man, who still has the potential to be a starter. It’s a long shot, however. He throws low to mid 90s, has great movement and an amazing changeup. He had a slider in college. He has consistantly been good from the bullpen and will probably continue on this path. Like a successful Brandon Morrow, if you will.

Mike Pelfrey is the most intriguing of all of the prospects here. His fastball ranges from 90-97 MPH with spectacular movement. He has a lethal, 83 MPH breaking ball, a nasty slider, and a beautiful sinking slider in the mid 80s. He had success this September, but that’s about it. His control needs work, and he still allows more hits than the average pitcher, but nonetheless his stuff is great, the guy is big and many believe that this could be his year.

    • stickguy says:

need to take pelfrey out of your deal.

    • Achilles400 says:

What version of Heilman and Pelfrey have you been watching? best set up man? Pelfrey has a lethal breaking ball and nasty slider. Dude, get a grip, his breaking stuff may be the worst in the league.

I need to put a block on Metsblog as my IQ steadily drops every time I come in here.

  16. skip says:

We get Pudge and Dontrelle and Pudge’s contract because the Tigers want to dump his salary. So we give them back a pitcher and catcher for a pitcher and a catcher.

  17. skip says:

And Perez COULD be as good as Santana…

  18. billypicasso says:

    when will it end!!! ————————————

  19. skip says:

    When pitchers and catchers report!

  20. pezao says:

I’m probably the only reader on this site who knows that La Velle is a cool name because that was the first name of the coach for the BYU football team for years and years…..

  21. metsfan420 says:

As usual, los mets are the pawns. Damn you Yankees!

  22. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Can we be doing this to get Bedard?

  24. gomets6091 says:

so you’d rather have a pitcher who is 22-27 with a 4.49 ERA with 306 K’s over the past 2 seasons than a pitcher who is 34-19 with a 3.04 ERA with 480 K’s over the same 2 seasons? That makes sense…
