Buzz: Dodgers Don’t Seek Broxton Trade
By Jordan Zakarin - Dec 5, 2007 2:45 am

According to the LA Times, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti told reporters that he does not have any interest in trading 23-year-old RHP Jonathan Broxton, who is considered the team’s best young pitcher.

In 165 relief apparances during his three-year career, Broxton has a 2.98 ERA while striking out 218 batters throughg 172 innings.

Broxton will earn the league minumum next season, after which he is eligible for salary arbitration.

Colletti is also ‘re-examining’ OF Matt Kemp, whom he declined to trade to Florida in a potential deal for 3B Miguel Cabrera.

The paper states he is beginning to think his young players can fill immediate holes in his roster, either now or in the near future, such as center field and starting pitcher.

Lastly, Colletti said the Dodgers are no closer to making a deal with Baltimore for LHP Erik Bedard.

…so now the Blue Jays are looking elsewhere, and the dodgers are reconsidering dealing the parts it would require to get bedard…a ray of hope for the Mets, perhaps…

A GM that doesn’t trade away all his prospects…i want one of those

  2. ugbmets21 says:

would it be possible to trade beltran to sanfran for the 2 pitchers and then go sign jones?

NOT A GOOD IDEA? just thowing it out there!

  3. Bats in the Belfry says:

Quite the ray of hope, 24 hrs. ago it seemed as though 1/3 of mlb teams were interested in Bedard and most were logical suitors.
Now we have what appears to be the M’s and the Mets, although I wouldn’t put it past the Diamondbacks to jump in.
If Bedard has made it known that he wants out , I believe the O’s will be more inclined to get rid of him (perhaps only if they can find a suitor for Tejada), get younger, clear payroll, and subsequently fester in the AL east next year, it’s a given anyway. A generous combination of mets prospects….and not the feeler offer we heard which was declined today, is more than reasonable.

If not or in addition to landing Bedard, replace glavine with glavine circa 2004, carlos silva pleaseee….the ridiculous amt. of ground balls he gets will provide for some really spectacular dp’s behind him, oh and yes they are real and they are spec-tacular

  4. ugbmets21 says:

well i was just thinking if we were to get jones who is a gold glover and can hit 30 hrs is he that much of a dwn grade from beltran? terrable avg but just think…mabie sanfran would do it. with bonds gone they need a BIGTIME Player. and we need pitching
    Maine
    Perez
    Cane
    Lincecum
    pedro
    reyes
    castillo
    wright
    jones
    deldado
    alou
    gomez/church
    shneider
i think thats a hell of a team…but only fantasy

  5. lawgotham says:

I like that everyone thinks out of the box but why trade Beltran? Andrew Jones is a great fielder, hits HR’s but has lost his way average wise (not that he ever hit for average). I think that even though Beltran is not electrifying, he is all-star caliber. He’s not rah-rah, but quietly puts up the numbers.

  6. metsfaninmichigan says:

Any way trading Reyes and prospect for santana, then trading gomez, pelfrey, heilman, and gotay for bedard and tejada

  7. Number41 says:

I realized back in ‘62 this was not going to be easy…but this is gettin’ ridiculous.

  8. TenTonHammer says:

“then trading gomez, pelfrey, heilman, and gotay for bedard and tejada”

The O’s just turned down Gomez, Humber, and Heilman.

You think they’ll suddenly jump at Gomez, Pelfrey, Heilman, Gotay?

  9. Gland says:

This article doesn’t mention the Mariners, who are in on Bedard as well. I people writing this blog would stop trying to manipulate the “buzz” they are finding to make everything look like some sort of possibility that the Mets are back into it. It just stirs everyone up and then everyone gets all angry when it doesn’t happen.

  10. Number41 says:

was there a short snipett on John Maine on here a minute ago?
    where did it go?
did dream it, said was home, not out dressing a little, black dress…

    • JarvisJanesAddiction says:

Probably “recalled” by Matt. No doubt he’s capable of doing this…..and rightfully so. John Maine in a black dress? *Shudder*

  11. therealsince86 says:

I do not want to trade Reyes but IF you could get Santana and Bedard would you do it?
Reyes and a couple of B level prospects for Santana
Gomez, Pelfrey, Mulvey, Heilman for Bedard.
Santana, Bedard, Pedro, Maine, Perez. Guy’s I would have to think that is worth Reyes and the farm.

As for who plays SS I am sure there are some candidates out there, none of them will be Reyes and we will have to suffer through it but man what a rotation.

    • therealsince86 says:

Oh and there is one SS that might interest Omar. He is a Cuban defector named Alexei Ramirez. Don’t know much about him but other than that you have to look at Eckenscrap. Now if there was some way to save enough prospects to get Chone Figgins then we would be set.

  12. RukusInQueenz says:

This has to be one of the most disappointing off seasons in Mets history. We found out that are prospects “ain’t who we thought they were”. We went from pursuing Santana to Haren to Blanton, to Bedard(even though I think we are the front runners for Bedard) to we don’t have the young good prospects to get them. We are left to figure out who can possibility be acquired for them Snell, Lowry, Burnett, etc. I can understand that us fans might over value are prospects but how did the Mets management make that mistake? I don’t see any other
team making that mistake. It seems to me that it started when we went after Santana and the john cheese and boxes had better prospects than us(therefore finding out that are prospects were not enough for a trade with the twinkies). Billy Bean knew that more than likely the loser between them will be looking to get Haren. At that point Billy knowing that we were desperate for a pitcher was thinking to get more prospects from the Mets not for Haren but Blanton(lowering there value even more). The O’s seeing what the other teams might receive are looking to join in the fun and at the same time dump salary. Who do we offer them Humber, Gomez, and Heilman. Now be honest none of us would make that deal. Why would management even waste time with an offer like that. Just to here what everybody else been saying to us “no”. The media also reporting rumors and having subjective opinions make it seem that we don’t have the players to acquire a big name pitcher(making teams not wanting them). The most important thing we forget also it’s a sellers market. Teams who got pitchers to trade know that this years free agent class is garbage so they are asking for the world for them(knowing the worst thing that can happen is they can always keep there pitcher). Or its can be that are prospects really do suck!!!

  13. tonylett says:

Omar, stop w/ the jap pitchers and vizcaino junk. 4 yrs for these
guys means-get up f/ the table and walk away hombre.

get serious w/ silva and chacon and be done w/this search
already!–of all the guys on the market, these 2 are the only ones
you can even consider giving 4 yrs to.
they’re 28&30 y/o and dont have arm probs.

plus in certain scenarios they’ve produced under pressure.

  14. Steve In Tampa says:

I’ve come to the conclusion that the Dodgers are all talk, and won’t be a factor in any deals…They will hold onto their prospects which can only help the Mets chances of getting a top pitcher

  15. poonjabee says:

bedard’s a pipedream…silva’s an overpaid livan, might as well just get livan…but seriously, does anyone think that maybe it’s time to start drafting differently? get SP, SP & more SP with those 1st 3 picks…and then heck, KEEP GOING!!! Now for this year, I am going to stick to what I have been saying for days now, give up the wild goose chase, call Pittsburgh and swap for Snell & Nady…if they offer Duke also, TAKE HIM! remember this, he may suck in Pittsburgh, but this is the franchise that has given up young pitching with talent for years because they can’t manage it in house (i.e. Jason Schmidt, Ollie, etc)…you don’t think a change of scenery wouldn’t help? Offer Gomez, Mulvey and Heilman & even perhaps Carp for that deal…SP does grow on trees but talent doesn’t…Sure Duke fell off a little, but who is to say “The Jacket Racket” wouldn’t be able to fix him with his computer programs, scientific probes, meditation, tofu-eating voodoo?

    • dannyb says:

“computer programs, scientific probes, meditation, tofu-eating voodoo?”

Give him 5 minutes with Victor Zambrano and Zach Duke. Just 5 minutes. Maybe he thought he was doing a Just For Men commercial or something? What a clown.

This all goes back to the trade deadline in 2003, when we were a team below .500, but still in the Wild Card race. Jim Duquette (who by the way, how did he ever get another job???) gives away the jewel of the system (who would be our ace right now….by a long shot).

  16. darkstar73 says:

the problem here, is that the Orioles don’t need to trade Bedard, there’s no pressing need to do so right now. If they don’t get a package they want, they hold onto him, and maybe down the road some team will be more desperate for him at that point. It’s not like he’s going to be a FA after this season.
