Buzz: Jays keeping Burnett, for Now
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 5, 2007 1:39 pm

Yesterday, at ESPN.com, Jayson Stark wrote that the Mets have inquired about Blue Jays RHP A.J. Burnett.

However, today at ESPN.com, Stark says the Blue Jays are not going to trade Burnett or Alex Rios, ‘for now,’ adding that Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi will ‘probably head home today.’

Burnett, who is certainly talented, but often injured, can opt out of his five-year, $55 million contract after the 2008 season.

In 25 starts for Toronto in 2007, he was 10-8 with a 3.75 ERA.

At this point, I’m willing to settle for the Mets coming close to a deal. An actual deal is too much to hope for.

I still think that Burnett is a front line starter that is within the Mets’ means as far as a trade goes. I would not be unhappy if we dealt for him. You could do much, much worse. He’s a very talented pitcher who’s had some injury issues in the past, but there’s no indication this guy can’t have a healthy 20008 and beyond.

Burnett and Pavano were the two guys that a lot of people (not me) were in love with when Metsblog was in its infancy,. They are so overrated and always have been. Pavano was a big bust that the Yankees totally regret and Burnett, though having a very nice ERA this past season, does not impress me. I could see us overpaying in players for him and him getting hurt and we’d be stuck with his contract. If he’s being held onto by the Jays, it’s a blessing for us IMO.
