Buzz: Jays will Likely Keep AJ Burnett
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 5, 2007 2:26 pm

In an update to ESPN.com, Jayson Stark says that the Giants continue to balk at trading RHP Tim Lincecum to the Blue Jays for OF Alex Rios.

According to Stark, the Jays are trying to ‘stockpile as many power arms as possible,’ meaning there is ‘little chance’ that they’d trade RHP A.J. Burnett to the Mets, even ‘for a hot young outfield prospect like Carlos Gomez.’

…first off, who in baseball isn’t trying to stockpile as many power arms as possible…i mean, i hope it’s not just the Blue Jays…second, ‘hot young prospect,’ to describe gomez…very nice

nice change of pace in characterization

We have 2 of the top 25 prospects rated in baseball in Gomez and FMart

We just have no highly thought of pitching prospects. The system is not barren. Just the top end pitching is considered less than impressive

    • jamie says:

yeah, nice to hear “hot young prospect” rather than “worthless in trades”

Hmm…I can’t see the Giants getting too excited about Rios. I know the local radio here isn’t sold on him. These Giants fans are in for some rough times for the next few years minus Bonds’ star-quality. Hey, speaking of the Giants…

Would anyone consider Zito for Delgado?

    • Bench5urvivor says:

that’s an albatross of a contract I think most met fans are happy not to have, especially given his pay-off last year

Also being in SF, there would be a mutiny if they traded Lincecum or Cain. Lowry, no one out here would even notice. AT&T sells out all the time even with lousy teams, they will try to rebuild without giving up the young talented starters. I think now that Sabian is rid of Bonds, he will show he isn’t as bad a GM as he looked since 2001.

Funny story you may appreciate super, had to do a reference check on a contractor working on my house, and the guy gives me Ralph Barbieri’s name. Hilarious to talk to that guy, just as annoying on the phone as on the radio. At least he didn’t mention Amici’s to me.

I think it will be quite the opposite. Without Bonds to be there and overshadow everything he does, it will expose him.

      • supermannino says:

Well, his name is on the box.

I don’t understand how that deflated-sounding Joe Pesci has a career.

Interesting…the Mo Vaughn trade in reverse? Overpaid pitcher FROM the west coast team; we SEND an overpaid has-been DH. Worth a shot, maybe they’ll eat a few $.

  3. vinluvr says:

with the trade of lindstrom and owens for vargas, I’d say the Mets are not trying to stockpile power arms–they’ve been unloading them.

  4. wannabegm says:

It seems that many of these reporters can have a tendency to characterize prospects differently dependent upon their article in order to make their point more poignant. It’s a rollercoaster with these varied characterizations.

  5. breadclock says:

The Mets, for one, aren’t stockpiling young power arms, and if they were, they’d turn them into off-speed groundball pitchers. The Mets don’t seem to like stockpiling young anything. It’s more fun to stockpile platoon and injured outfielders and, of course, catchers on the fast decline.

sorry i must have missed something since i live down here in baltimore but what the heck happened that makes carlos gomez now a hot young prospect. im not saying hes not, but like 24 hours ago the mets prospects were all worthless, pieces of junk that may or may not be able to beat a team of replacement players. suddenly theyre “hot”. this is why i hate sports journalists, and this is why i hate espn especially. this whol offseason is just so frustrating. when teams want prospects, ours suck, but when teams want major league players, we only have top prospects to offer. wtf!

  7. Jim says:

It is funny that up until about 10 minutes ago Burger King wouldn’t hire Gomez to work the drive through. Now he is a Hot young prospect??????????? Funny how things go when deadline approaches and you need to justify that expense account in Nashville!

“According to Stark, the Jays are trying to ‘stockpile as many power arms as possible,”

In other news Jayson Stark also notes that breathing might just be the key to living.

    Thank you captain obvious.

  9. Blue_n_Orange says:

If they trade Rios, They might be able to use a player like Gomez.

  10. cbusmetsfan says:

This is all getting old…why don’t we sign Silva for a 3 or 4 year deal. Then we have Pedro, Maine, Perez, Silva, Hernandez, Humber, Pelfrey and we’ll throw Heilman into the mix. The first four are in the rotation while the last 4 fight it out for the 5th spot. If Heilman makes it, Pelfrey becomes our Joba this year, El Duque is long relief, and Humber goes to AAA. If one of the other guys make it, Heilman goes back to 8th inning, the others go wherever needed.

We’re not getting a big time ace and we should switch attention to the bullpen and make it as strong and bulletproof as possible.

If the highlight of our offseason is Church and Schneider and the above, this has been a pretty bad off season.

  11. supermannino says:

    Don’t forget Stokes.

  12. shamsky says:

Why doesn’t Freddie lend Omar the $20 million bucks it wil take to buy the Friggin Marlins, and merge the two teams?

  13. metinDC23 says:

How is holding onto AJ Burnett stock piling young hard-throwers. He can opt-out next year.

Its actually a waste to hold onto him if they can get something worthwhile back since they don’t have a prayer this season in their division. And since Gomez is now a ‘hot young prospect’ that wouldn’t be a bad return…

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

They just want an all star rotation.

      That is where rebuilding begins.

It’s hard to get proven, big time starters.

They’d have a rotation of Halladay, Lincecum, Burnett, Marcum and Litsch.

They could trade McGowan, Banks, Towers and/or Chacin for bats.

I’d trade McGowan, Chacin and Snider for a big third base bat if I got Lincecum for Rios. Glaus and a little more

  14. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

All signs point to the Mets getting Erik Bedard.

The Jays might be out of it if they get Lincecum. They’d have Halladay, Marcum, Litsch, Lincecum, Burnett and Chacin.

The Mets’ best offer can beat the Mariners best offer, even if he Mariners include Adam Jones.

The Dodgers won’t give up two needs (brilliant setup man and future brilliant closer, plus bats that they really need) for a lusty desire (an ace).

The question is, how much will it take for the O’s to want to trade Bedard?

It seems that Omar’s interest in Livan and Colon confirmed that he may be willing to trade Pelfrey. And rumor has it they want to replace Gomez with Martinez if necessary.
