Buzz: Mets Interested in IF-OF Amezaga
By D.J. Short - Dec 5, 2007 9:08 pm

Jim Molony of MLB.com writes that the Mets have interest in Marlins IF-OF Alfredo Amezaga.

In 133 games with the Marlins last season, Amezaga batted .263 with two homers and 30 RBI, while stealing 13 bases.

Amezaga is arbitration-eligible for the 2008 season.

…he would add some more flexibility, as he is a switch-hitter who plays nearly every position on the diamond…not to mention that he has one of my favorite names in baseball…

then we could trade gotay easier i guess..

    • whoamar says:

why make this clown a Met..esp since they werent offered Willis when he was available to Detroit…makes no sense for the Mets to deal with this AAA club. screw em and keep gotay.

  2. skip says:

What is Omar’s fascination with the Marlins? Will somebody please tell him there are other teams he can try to make a deal with?

  3. therealsandman says:

maybe we can get this stud if we offer reyes

  4. gipper913 says:

Just for the name…I like it. Does seem to signal Gotay may go today.

  5. Steve In Tampa says:

Didn’t this guy hit a ton against us last year???We should pick him up just so we don’t have to pitch to him….

    Breaking News

This just in, the red sox are leading in the johan sweepstakes.

    • whoamar says:

you dont say? Are there 2 sourves with that story.

Bring back the old style journalism where a story meant it was going to happen!

      LGM!

  7. tres says:

    Amazin’ Amezaga

    or

    Amezaga Mets

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

      How about Amezaga Alfredo?

I believe they have that at Sbarro.

    • CaseStreet says:

      FUK-U-DO-ME!

This tops any Amazin’ Amezaga or Amezaga Mets.

Seriously. FUK-U-DO-ME would replace JO-SE, JO-SE-JO-SE…JO-SE, JO-SE as Mets Fans Cheer of the Year (can I copyright that phrase?)

  8. gottabelieve07 says:

Alfredo Amezaga Newhan is his full name.

But in all seriousness, these little moves make such a huge difference during the season. Damien Easley was very under the radar as a pickup – right up until he started smacking every big late inning HR and hit for this team.

And of course you have the flipside – Newhan and Conine.. ugh.

  9. Slob says:

Who wouldn’t want a 30 year old utility infielder with a lifetime .314 OBP? I mean, surely if anything is worth a roster spot it’s that type of production.

  10. innaword says:

What happened to Marlins not wanting to trade in the division? Oh wait, that applies to Dontrelle, maybe not Abhoraga.

  11. metsmygod says:

Your Mom is reportedly interested in Johan Santana

  12. baseballdad says:

Thought the bench was set !

  13. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

    WTF?

Vi Sitter I Ventrilo Och Spelar DotA!!!!

Sorry, hearing Amezaga makes me want to talk about Warcraft (great game from 1995) in Swedish…

  14. stevesy says:

    can he pitch?

  15. bennyb363 says:

WOW OMAR UR REALLY GETTING THE BIG FISH NOW

    GO GET EM

HOW ABOUT WE PICK UP A FREE AGENT THAT ACTUALLY ADRESSES A NEED THANX I WULD APPRECIATE IT

    • Gland says:

Which free agent are you thinking? Livan Hernandez? Carlos Silva? They would be nice, but they are probably not going to sign until some of these bigger pitchers get traded.

  16. stickguy says:

he might not be the best player, but it wouldn’t be bad to have a guy like him.

Right now the bench can hit, but lacks some flexibility positionally. They really don’t have a legit BU SS, or 3B for that matter.

Gotay by default has to cover for Reyes, and Wright.

Easley and ANderson aren’t really good options at 2B or 1B, and they need a real back up 1B.

A jack of all trades would help, or a decent OF/1B type. Hopefully Easley can spot a game at 3rd now and then.

Nady, Mench would cover 1B and OF. Amezega would too, right? ANd hopefully cover for 3B and SS. WOuld be nice to give those guys an occasional day off.

The odd man out almost has to be Endy, unless they decide to go with 6 guys in the pen. That would help the bench immensly, and besides, Omar only pitches 4 guys anyway, right?

    • mdemaio says:

I’m wondering about Marcus Thames for a similar role…RH 1b/OF. He might be cheaper than the other two, and has more pop off the bench…Detroit has to pare away a few from that roster…

      …and speaking of Detroit, what a lineup…

      Granderson
      Polanco
      Ordonez
      Cabrera
      Sheffield
      Guillen
      Renteria
      Pudge
      Casey

      Yikes…

  17. landyg21 says:

why did we re-sign Marlon Anderson if we were going to go after Amezaga????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    • hyperion4 says:

He actually has a glove. Plays CF as well as the infield.

Easley, Anderson, Gotay — not big glove guys.

If the Mets get this guy — and I don’t care if they do or don’t — it probably means Gotay is gone. Easley and Anderson have major-league deals. If Gotay is perceived as having some trade value, then that seems OK to me. Every little bit helps and the Mets don’t think he has a future as an everyday 2B.

      • Slob says:

I’m not sure what Gotay’s projected number of pinch hits are for ‘08 are, but whatever it is, it’s worth more than anything Amezaga offers. Reyes isn’t going to sit often enough to need a superior defender to back him up. Wright should never be out of the lineup and his defense doesn’t warrant having a late inning replacement. There are four guys with 2b experience on the bench as it is. Endy Chavez is just as good in any outfield position as Amezaga is, and Amezaga has a grand total of 43 innings of major league experience at the corner outfield positions, which are the only positions we would need a plus defender at. Center is covered by Beltran, whose defense is more than adequate. Adding Amezaga to this team at the expense of Gotay is a grievous mistake. It would be a total waste of a roster spot. What we need is a RF-1b who can platoon with Church and spell Delgado.

  18. Gland says:

Geez, we didn’t sign this guy yet. It’s just random speculation.

  19. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

i’m sort of disappointed that we didn’t trade milledge straight up for this guy

  20. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

omar is the biggest joke at the baseball meetings.. a smalltime GM acting like he’s a player

  21. Steal Home Jose! says:

Bring me the skills of Alfredo Amezaga.

  22. landyg21 says:

why don’t we go after Edgardo Alfonso, lol. He’s hitting 373 in the Domincan League through 100 at bats. Dominican league baseball is awful.

  23. Matt Hinrichs says:

I really, really like Amezega, but, isn’t he the same thing as Endy and Gotay? I could see Gotay dealt, but Endy is here to stay. I don’t really see having both, even though you can make the case for Amezega as a Util.

But what the Mets need is a little pop off the bench, because, besides Castro, who usually is unusable off the bench, and Damion Easley, we don’t have a deep ball threat on the bench, an Agbayani or a Todd Pratt.

I saw someone mention Kevin Mench, and that’s seems like a nice fit to me.

    • hyperion4 says:

See above. The Mets probably see Amezaga as a option superior to Gotay because AA is quite good with the glove and can play a creditable CF. Obviously he can’t hit like Gotay. I think Gotay may be at least something of a trade chip for the Mets given how well he hit for most of last year, and the Mets are never going to give him a shot at the full-time 2B job. May as well get a guy who has “utility” written on his baseball card.

    • stickguy says:

right now, Church is the back up CF, so that is less of an issue.

  24. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

frankly i’d take fonzie any day.. he was true met with heart

  25. Matt Hinrichs says:

We should get Richard Hidalgo, no joke, for off the bench. Just signed a minor-league contract with Houston. Remember when we brought him in for Dan Wheeler, and he hit a home run in eight straight games?

  26. Matt Hinrichs says:

By the way, I think that the Mets may really get Amezega, this guy Malony who is writing this broke the story of Cabrera and Willis to Detroit.

  27. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

can we bring bruce boisclair out of retirement.. i always loved his name

  28. Mets24 says:

THIS IS PATHETIC. WE GO FROM SANTANA TO ALFREDO AMEZAGA……WHAT A JOKE THIS IS BECOMING

  29. Mets24 says:

WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS TEAM? IT FEELS LIKE WE’VE REGRESSED TO 2003 ALL OVER AGAIN…..ALL WE NEED IS TO BRING IN JIM DUQUETTE TO REPLACE OMAR…..

THIS TEAM HASN’T BEEN THE SAME SINCE THAT MOTA PITCH TO SPIEZIO. I HATE YOU SCOTT SPIEZEO.

  30. tres says:

    Amezaga=more trade bait

  31. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

omar might as well trade pelfrey for a AA prospect… he’s a totally clueless GM

  32. tres says:

    ^^HAHA…got ‘em

  33. John Paul Cullinane says:

    I haven’t heard much about this guy…

    …how’s his curveball?

    …Does he have a 95+mph fastball

    …Good control?

    …Is he an ace?

…if you haven’t picked up on this yet, my point – can he pitch? No.

  34. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

Omar has got to be drunk…or high…that’s the only explanation.

  35. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

Gotay, Marlon Anderson, Easley, Chavez, Castro, Gomez (unless he is dealt?)……uhm, yeah…Omar, we need another utility guy. Our pitching is “fine”, don’t need a pitcher or anything.

  36. stickguy says:

Um, just because he might also be working on other deals doesn’t mean that he isn’t also working for pitching. It’s not like he is 1 deal away from the limit or anything.

Also might mean that he is considering moving Gotay in another deal.

Or could just be 1 more baseless rumor.

  37. MetsMaven says:

    Hey Omar,

After dealing for Amezaga, maybe you can inquire about the availability of Nick Punto.

You can never have enough .210 hitting utility players.

  38. BigDaddyKirk says:

This just in… Omar has left the winter meetings to scout a 12 week old fetus. He has some control issues right now, but could be “the goods” in 2027.

  39. JohnnyG says:

The Mets already have a couple Amezaga’s. Instead, they should draft Jamie D’Antona in the Rule 5 draft. He plays C, 1B, and 3B and has raked in the minor leagues. No more slap hitting utility players. This kid can play.

  41. innaword says:

Guess they can’t trade him now, huh?

  42. mets17 says:

Wow everyone is in rare form tonight

  43. hyperion4 says:

    That’s hilarious!

  44. pifman says:

20 bucks that’s a picture of him hitting a foul ball.

  45. Slob says:

Wheeler was traded to the Astros for Adam Seuss. Another bad trade.

Hidalgo was acquired from the Astros for David Weathers and Jeremy Griffiths.

Tyler Yates left as a free agent at the end of 05.

  46. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

dude, where ya been? i’ll be the bearor of bad news….that article is FAKE

  47. BigDaddyKirk says:

So wait… does that mean we’re just not going to field a pitcher? Put the ball on a tee and hope someone can field it?
