According to Joel Sherman in the New York Post, the Mets were among among six teams that asked for - and received - the medical report on free-agent RHP Freddy Garcia, who underwent shoulder surgery last August and is not expected back before June.
…as i wrote the other day, i recall hearing a day or so ago that the Mets may be the front runners for garcia…
Sherman also provides information on Hiroki Kuroda, Dan Haren, Erik Bedard, and Billy Beane’s lack of interest in Melky Cabrera.

ugh…
big whoop.
Honestly who cares? A typical old, injured, burnt out, spanish player for Omar to sign.
Garcia is from Spain? Does he say Barthalona?
“These teams don’t have to trade these players, and I would not be surprised if some of these guys who are being mentioned to be on the block do not get traded at all…Usually what teams try to do is, what they call, being ‘blown away.’ You know, being offered deals that they can’t turn down. The problem is, what’s going on right now, that you are trying to hold on to your prospects as much as you can. Teams are willing to give up prospects, but the question is: who are the prospects and how many of those prospects.”
“The question is not do we have the talent. The question is how many prospects we are willing to give away.”
– Omar Minaya.
“The Mets have offered Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman and Philip Humber to the Orioles for LHP Erik Bedard.”
“According to Joel Sherman in the New York Post, the Mets were among among six teams that asked for – and received – the medical report on free-agent RHP Freddy Garcia, who underwent shoulder surgery last August and is not expected back before June.”
“The Mets reportedly have interest in Livan Hernandez.”
“The Mets have traded Lastings Milledge for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.”
“The Mets, Blue Jays, and Mariners are considered front runners for O’s Erik Bedard.”

In the end, it all points to this:
The Mets will offer Gomez/Martinez, Heilman, Pelfrey and/or Humber for Erik Bedard.
Then sign a guy like Garcia for cheap should the need come around, and sign Livan for the rotation.
I don’t hate this. It doesn’t really cost us much and it could be a fresh arm introduced at the midpoint of the season. Sign him and then forget about him until July.
He could be ready just as El Duque goes on the DL.
I’ve already forgotten about him.
If Garcia doesnt go on it first….
“not expected back before June”
Meh.
Garcia is fairly solid when healthy
this is a good, “it’s only monry” move. Get him cheap, let him rehab on the 60 day DL, and if you get lucky, great. If not, they are out a million bucks, so no big whoop!
totally agree. one of the best things minaya has done is get cheap inning eaters with the idea that one or two pan out. if he doesn’t who cares? we know a few things about him though… 1. at some point he was pretty damn good
2. he’ll be rested come june
3. even if he sucks he aint gonna cost enough to be prhibitive to us getting others.
Please take him BIGGEST WASTE of 10 MILLION DOLLARS in history. The Phillies paid a total of 10 million dollars for one win. I take that back though cause maybe it was the best 10 million ever spent because I think we beat you guys by one game in the division. Chase Utley MVP 08
