Buzz: No Go on Willis and Pudge Rumor
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 5, 2007 10:35 pm

Earlier in the day, WFAN’s Sweeny Murti broke down a rumor that suggested the Mets could acquire LHP Dontrelle Willis from the Tigers, as well as C Ivan Rodriguez and his $13 million salary.

However, at his blog for Booth Newspapers, Tigers beat reporter Danny Knobler debunks the idea, by writing…

“While they were negotiating…with Florida, it appears that the Tigers did briefly consider turning it into a three-way deal in which Willis would go to the Mets, possibly with Pudge Rodriguez…The Mets love Willis, and in fact had tried to get him from the Marlins themselves…But it’s barely worth talking about now, because it’s not happening, and the Mets know it.”

…from what i can gather, while the Tigers most certainly would have requested a pretty significant package from the Mets, RHP Aaron Heilman was the only player from the Mets to be discussed with detroit, though i would guess C Johnny Estrada may have been involved eventually as well

Nevertheless, Knobler quotes a Mets official as saying, “There’s no turning back now for them.  If anything was going to be done, it had to be done before (the trade became public).  They’ve energized their fan base now.  They can’t go back.”

…well, hats off to omar, because, from what he told reporters, the Marlins were never going to trade dontrelle to a team within their division…so, to listen, while trying to sneak him to queens, back to the NL East, behind their backs, is either really shady, or really clever, or both, i suppose

…by the way, thanks to bad boyz for the link

ok officially 0-1 on an ace so far. lets see what happens coming up

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

      another catcher?

    • whoamar says:

I dont know if I’d call him an ace, mariano.
Maybe a #2/3, which they have plenty of already.

We’re only settling for proven to give the #3’s in the rotation more confidence. I’d rather have Burnett than Willis. He’s like having an Al Leiter all over again…pitching on guts and will even though he is walking everyone.

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

0-1 because we had our first offer rejected?

      That’s a prelimenary offer.

      Omar can up the ante.

Sweeny Murti has so far completely pooped the proverbial bed on his reports.

  3. 5and7 says:

dontrelle’s not the answer anyway. he would provide life and energy, but that’s about it. unless he regains his previous form and gets away from his 2007 numbers he’s really nothing more than a cheerleader. and for pudge…well hes on the back nine as far as i see it, and nothing good can come from picking him up right before the mitchell report becomes public

    • CaseStreet says:

It ain’t over till the fat pitcher sings. So here’s my shot at fantasy GM:

-Mets get D-Train and Pudge and Tigers get some combo of our OF/SP prospects (they traded all of theirs away)

-We then trade Pudge, Estrada, and pay part of their salaries to Nats (they’re shopping for a vet catcher) and we get back Flores (our 3rd string C), Nick Johnson (1B backup), and one of their many Rookie pitchers (they have 5 SP Rooks on their roster).

We get a 2-4 SP plus fill back up positions (you know castro and delgado are going down)

      • metinDC23 says:

Thats waay too much from the Nats. I don’t think they’d part with Flores and I don’t think they’d take both Pudge and Estrada. Pudge for Nick Johnson seems fair. Theres no point talking about Estrada because everyone knows he’ll wind up non-tendered.

Omar is trying. I hate it when people bash him for not doing anything. Hes trying the best with what he has. So all I can say is just wait and see.

    • lawgotham says:

I agree 100%. Look over his time as GM (Expos too)..he comes up with something when he can. He is not going to make a trade for the sake of making a trade. He also has a budget so he doesn’t go wild on the free agency. Remember, trades don’t end once the winter meetings are over. We’ve got until April 1st.

    We ain’t, goin nowhere

‘Cause we Bad Boyz for life

    Sorry, couldn’t resist

  6. therealsandman says:

this is the same pitcher who almost blew a 5-0 lead on tom glavine’s wonderful performance in game 162

  7. ed fever says:

I’m not being neg. just relaistic were getting shut out here… I wish Omar would sign a few free agents, give us something and wait for SP … Dotel, Jennings and Amezaga trade …. thats enough then if he still wants to work on a big fish go ahead

  8. bhill410 says:

thank god, i have never seen the public more enamored with a player who has been absolutly horrible the last two years. It would be like a gm actually wanting livan hernandez…. oh crap

  9. Scarsraider says:

Omar should have stopped wasting his time on a pitcher he was told he could not get, and should have been paying more attention on other possibilities. As of right now the situation looks incredibly bad because the Mets may walk out of the meetings with no one.

    • Yeah, but with the exception of the cabrera/wills deal, everybody is walking out empty handed. Deals may take a bit longer to pan out. Especially with everyone waiting on a Santana deal to set the market.

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

      UP THE ANTE ON BEDARD!

The Mets have no real competition for the guy!

Martinez, Heilman, Pelfrey and Humber for Bedard.

      Sooner rather than later!

  10. stickguy says:

Scars, why are you surprised that Omar is going to walk out of nashville without a pitcher? Generally, not much really happens at the meetings, other than, well, a lot of meetings!

The real action will happen in the coming weeks when the Gms and their people get home and start processing the info they gained from the discussions.

Then the real negotiating can happen, in an environment more condusive to logical thought.

The winter meetings is like the Barrett – Jackson car auction. Lots of fun, tons of action, and too easy to get caught up in the excitement and make a really dumb purchase.

Let Omar go back, hit the bunker, and start working the phones.

I still predict that, after all the talk on the big names, not much will happen with them (Santana probably being the only one traded), and Omar will pull off another deal out of left field. One of those “you never saw this guy coming” specials.

Hopefully though it will be better than the one last week, which I for sure never saw coming!

  11. innaword says:

Never has so much been written about so little actually happening with these Mets.

  12. Scarsraider says:

Stick, Omar needed to go into the meetings and set the stage. He fell behind from the beginning and is now trying to climb his way back into it. He didn’t show off our prospects enough to make them noticed and intriguing. I don’t think they will get no one- i just don’t think they are going to land the big name pitcher everyone was hoping for.

    • stickguy says:

I don’t really care about getting a “big name” pitcher. Willis is a big name, and he stinks.

As long as Omar gets a good talent that will improve the rotation and help them win more games, I don’t care how little know he is. THere are plenty of goes around (like Ian Snell) that most fans have either never heard of, or did not realize were so good, since they play on a 3rd world team!
