Speaking with WFAN, beat reporter Sweeny Murti said…
“Omar Minaya said he inquired about Dontrelle Willis, but the Marlins were not going to deal him within the division.
“However, the Tigers have explored the idea of spinning him off, and they have contacted the Mets. There wasn’t an official offer presented to Omar, but what was talked about, from what I was told, they talked about spinning off Willis. In addition, though, the Mets would have to take on some salary. The Tigers are interested, perhaps, in moving Willis and Ivan Rodriguez and dumping his salary, which is $13 million next season. So, if the Mets wanted Willis from Detroit, they’d have to take on that salary. The thing is, he has a no trade clause, so to get him to waive it you’d probably have to give him another year.”
…if you recall, the talk early in the off-season had been that omar was hoping pudge hit the open market, instead of getting his option picked up by the Tigers, because he would have been the team’s first choice to replace Paul Lo Duca…instead, though, the option was picked up, and Plan B through Z were pursued…

Brian Schneider’s OBP was actually 32 points better than Pudge’s. Please, Omar, stay away
Pudge had a .290 OBP three years ago and a .294 OPB last year. He’s become a major offensive liability. Brian Schneider gets on base a hell of a lot more than Pudge does.
If its for low level minor leaguers, sure. But this deal looks a lot better than it is. Neither player that the Mets would be getting is that good.
Gomez, Mulvey, Estrada, and Humber/Pelfrey? That should do it. We get a good hitting catcher in Ivan Rodriguez the legit #1 that we’ve been looking for..

I really don’t think Willis is a #1. Maybe a potential 1 but that’s not for sure.

So we’re supposed to make a trade on the presumption that Peterson might make Dontrelle a not horrible pitcher? As well as he did with turning around Perez, how’d he do with Zambrano again? The guy isn’t exactly a magician.
All im saying is that I like the Jacket’s chances on bringing D-Train back to form. Its worth a shot but it would depend on what package of players we would have to send over to detroit. It could end up being a steal.. just like Oliver Perez or a Bust.. just like Scott Kazmir.

I like this move if Omar can make it happen. It’s probably gonna take less in prospects than Bedard, Haren or Santana. I still think Willis can thrive in NY, you get the sense that he can be a big game pitcher. Let Peterson work on his mechanics and this could be a steal. Taking on Pudge’s contract shouldn’t be an issue here, we have the money, spend it.
where would the mets bat willis in the line-up? what a waste to have his bat in the american league. maybe the tigers can dh him to get him some ab’s.
of course, it comes down to who the mets have to give up for this trade. to accept a salary dump (i-rod), it can’t be that much or shouldn’t.
This is a tough call. I think this should be plan back up plan. D-Train is better than Livan. I think it depend on who the Mets have to give up. If they have no chance in getting Johan now or Bedard at the break, then you have to pull the trigger on this.
Haha yea Dontrelle should bat ahead of Delgado…..I like this trade if we can do it without giving up so much….additionally, it gives us an edge with santana such that if we give Minn a good offer they might feel more pressured to accept knowing we do in fact have a plan B.

We have a very legit shot at Bedard or Santana. I just want the one that we can get guaranteed cheap and easy.
At this point I am still convinced that it is Bedard, although Santana is stil a possibility.
HOWEVER.
I am only willing to give up Gomez/Martinez, Heilman, Pelfrey and Humber or Mulvey.
I’d include Gotay if necessary.

I want no part of Pudge or Willis, unless they come EXTREMELY cheap, and we are going to also get Bedard, Santana or Haren.
I’m literally sitting on the pot, thinking, we still have a shot at DTrain when he becomes a FA, I then refresh my sidekick and walla 32 year old Cerrone spews the greatest news I’ve heard all day.
Maybe if I say this will NEVER happen, like that guy did yesterday about the Marlins-Tigers trade, just maybe, just just maybe it’ll happen.

Schneider will be delt to Detroit. I don’t think the Tiger match up as a trade partner if we don’t have a cheaper catcher to give back.
……of all the speculation that’s been thrown out there, this is the only one i’ve cared to comment on…..an over-the-hill catcher who can’t get on base even a third of the time and a pticher who can’t produce an ERA under 5 in the national league…..don’t give me “he needs a change of scenery”, because i respect dontrelle too much as a competitor to let that impact my thinking…..this is a BAD decision and one we’d regret picking up contracts on regardless of who we give up.
Willis is a bum and Pudge is done and probably will be on “the list”. i am not crazy about Schneider but he is much better defensively and much cheaper than Pudge and Willis had 1 great year and that is it. No way
but how much worse is pudge than paul lo duca, or brian schneider? i don’t care if he did steroids like 5 years ago.

Thinking about this, I’d like to see it along with Santana. On its own. doesn’t make much sense. No big prospects. Guerro and Schneider for Pudge and Willis.

I dont think Dontrelle is all he’s cracked up to be. If it werent for Glavines meltdown in the last game, the story would have been Dontrelle’s meltdown and his inability to get thru the 4th inning with a huge lead.

I can’t take it. The rumors… 1st hes traded to another team and now hes offered to us. Please oh please Omar make this deal. Dontrelle would flourish here. Really, really good fit. Do it and try to save enough to still make the twinkies a respectable offer. I havent even mentioned Pudge. Even though he’s old now I’d still start him over any catcher currently on our roster. Praying this happens

By the way guys, I really don’t see any teams asking about Ruben Gotay. What’s the deal with that? I like the guy, but if he can be that “major league ready” type of player, I don’t see why he couldn’t be a piece in one of these trades.
Well, since he couldn’t crack a lineup that didn’t even have a second baseman last year, ie, the Mets, I assume he isn’t exactly that “major league ready” guy teams are talking about.
If I never see Gotay mentioned in a trade proposal agin it will be too soon.
You kidding me? Gotay last year batted .295 in 190 AB. His defense is a little shaky but he was becoming our everyday second baseman until we traded for Castillo.

With GMs, things aren’t straight forward.
Think outside the box.
This is:
1) An attempt to keep us in the running for Santana. If this deal is even possible, it may take Gomez, Heilman, Pelfrey, Mulvey and Gotay. They want MLB-ready talent.
2) A ploy to hasten MacPhail’s decisions on Bedard, or maybe lower his price. The Jays are best suitors for Lincecum. The Dodgers are best suitors for Kuroda or Blanton. The M’s may not have the talent to offer, for they may not want to part with Adam Jones, and even if they did, they’d have to sign a right fielder and also make sure that they have a better offer than the Mets possibly have. Unlikely.
According to this info, it’s probably the Mets vs. MacPhail not wanting to trade Bedard. So this move alerts MacPhail saying “hey, it’s now or never. Keeping Bedard may be a mistake, as we have no chance of having him long term, and we may need what we can reel in for the guy.”
The fact is, Omar wants a deal fast, before any other team comes out of the blue.
He’s coming home with either Santana or Bedard. I’m sure of it now.
And these talks with Livan and Colon mean that he is willing to trade Pelfrey, and doesn’t want to start El Duque.

Sorry if someone said this all ready but if we cant get a true ace we should keep our prospects and and sign Silva and Sign Rowand or Andrew Jones for RF.thenb mabee during the season try to make a trade before the dead line .
Neither of those guys would play RF.
If the Mets must do something big - as so many have stated - in order to bolster their starting rotation, then this might be their most viable option, yet.
With the Mariners and Dodgers now looming over them in the Santana sweeptakes, they barely qualify as a longshot to make a trade. The Tigers unloaded six players in their trade with Florida. So, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that they might seek to replenish their farm system, and the Mets could be the best candidates to aid them in that process.
Given the fact the Dodgers and Mariners are zeroing in on Bedard and Santana, and Dontrelle Willis’ numbers over the last two seasons might scare off other clubs, the Mets could find themselves standing alone in such discussions. However, picking up Rodriguez’s contract in return would have to mitigate against the number of prospects the Mets would surrender.
If there’s any truth to this rumor, I would hope that the Mets are investigating it fully.

Why did the Tigers pick up his option, if they want to trade him now to dump salary? I haven’t read all of the comments preceding me, but I would guess that question has been raised. The Mitchell Report, etc. I dunno. Of course, it depends on what we have to give up and if we have to sign Pudge to an extension. Also, will we now carry 4 catchers? Plans A, B and C have already been implemented for catcher (actually D too - Castro, Torrealba, Estrada and Schneider). Are we now going after Pudge? Maybe we can have an entire team of aging catchers. At least Pudge is or was good. Who knows how good D-Train will be either. This alternative raises as many questions as it answers, that’s for sure.
This has possibilities.
However, and a big one is, they can’t give up too much for them. He is no way an Ace, and they shouldn’t pay like he is.
Pudge should actually lower the package, since he is the overpriced player with the bad contract that they have to take back in a salary ump.
IMO, some of the trade proposals are paractically equivilant to the package that Detroit gave Florida. Maybe a touch lower at the top, but better top to bottom.
SO effectively, Detroit would be getting Cabrera for next to nothing (the marginal difference between what they traded to Fla. and what the Mets give them.)
Not bad if you can pull that off, plus they unload Pudge and his contract.
How about, Estrada + Gomez+ minor league relief pitcher? That is probably as much as he is worth anyway.
Or you can throw in sneider instead. How about Sneider + Humber + carp. Much more than that, and it ain’t worth it.
I would agree. Let’s not overspend on Willis. And Rodriguez would be a downgrade, so if we could trade Estrada and keep Schneider, that would be nice. Then we could package Castro in a deal for an ace. Willis is no ace, though.

If we are able to acquire a pitcher like Dontrell then that would enable us to put Perez in the Santanna trade. Perez plus prospects would have to be a better offer then John Lester plus prospects. Perez has had major league sucuess, and is cheap. So then we end up adding Santanna, Willis to the rotation, pudge behind the plate and lose schneider or estrada and perez.
The only way I make this trade is taking Dontrelle and only giving up Humber or Gomez but not both
