News: Sox still Favorites for Santana
By Chris Mazzone - Dec 5, 2007 8:38 pm

Tim Brown at Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Red Sox have ‘reaffirmed their status’ as the favorites to acquire Johan Santana,’ despite the parameters of the trade not changing.

…so by not changing their offer they ‘reaffirmed their status’ as favorites…umm, ok…

Brown goes on to mention the Mariners, writing…

‘Seattle briefly emerged as a candidate, center fielder Adam Jones and pitcher Brandon Morrow the main chips in the Mariners’ offer, but talks there have stagnated, as they did with the Los Angeles Angels.’

…i’m not really buying into the Mariners as a serious candidate for santana right now, but it should be noted the Mets were not mentioned by brown at all…

i will not believe any of this hogwash until i see it on the espnews bottom ticker.

Bruce Bosclair, Joel Youngblood, Anthony Young and Doug Flynn for Boog Powell and Cesar Cedeno.

      In a heartbeat!

I think there is a possible, though not so valid, reason for all the pre-trade garbage…
Team Omar is filtering the info through his channels to the media to see fan feedback or reaction. they dont want to get a bad reaction after a deal, so they get it before a deal is made.
There are definitely ridiculous ideas out here but some do make sense. If the Mets were to trade Reyes for 1 year of Santana, the fans will have his head. He found that out this week and the feedback we give is infor for him. Sont think those coffee-boys that work for him dont look at these things…they probably start the stuff and we stir the coffee.

    enough!!

    please!!

    • taestee says:

i think it’s funny that there’s even anything left to “comment” about on each of these “headlines”

  3. Bats in the Belfry says:

Nice cut and past job Tim Brown…its pretty much recycled garbage..

    Forget Johan, Bedard, Willis
    Trade Shea for the Marlins

    • gottabelieve07 says:

The Mets would, but the Marlins won’t. Apparently Shea will be arbitration eligible in 2032 so they don’t want to risk the price tag.

I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t stand this crud anymore. I want these meetings to end already……..

    • Chris Jelic says:

Winter meetings suck. It’s like using a portapotty when you have the runs. You don’t want to use it, but there’s no way you can’t. I have to check this site every 20 minutes, but it’s become an awful experience. No offense to Matt, he’s the messenger.

  5. SodaPopinski says:

i feel like this is the 80th time i’ve seen this post.

    literally.

  6. Chris Jelic says:

SUCH GARBAGE!!! These reporters know less than you do Matt. They need to write something, and they need to get people to read it – whether there’s anything to report or not. The Red Sox are still front runners because absolutely nothing has changed. Likewise, the Red Sox are still offering a package that the Twins won’t accept. This reporter is telling us nothing, but doing it well enough to attract rumor starving readers. Enough already!

    • mrmet it is says:

According to several ‘League Sources’, the Yankees are in serious discussions with the Marlins in which the Yankees would BUY the Florida Marlins franchise. This move would enable the Yankees to essentially use the Marlins major league team as a Development affiliate, basically existing as a bridge between the Yankees Triple-A team and their Major League squad. Additionally, the Yankees will now own the rights to Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, as well as other Marlin prospects of which to build their farm system. Currently the payroll of the Florida Marlins 25-man roster will cost less than what A-Rod will earn in 2008. A source quoted Hank Steinbrenner as saying “This is the kind of outside the box thinking that the Yankees are looking to pursue. This deal will allow us to develop our young players in the National League, until they are ready to join the big team”.

  7. pifman says:

You know… the Red Sox probably haven’t ever talked to the Twins about Santana and this is all just endless BS because the writers have absolutely nothing. I mean… have they actually predicted a trade before it was completed?

  8. metsmygod says:

I’m so sick of the name Santana…

F this guy, he’s taken all the attention away from the Winter Meetings and have made them extremely boring

  9. Metspain79 says:

Mets just signed bartolo colon for 7 years and 135 million cheeseburgers

  10. gottabelieve07 says:

These Santana posts are worse than a 3 hour lap dance.

  11. icedrake523 says:

TRADE REYES ALREADY! Reyes is at his ceiling now. He’ll never get significantly better. He’s still a very good player but he’s not going to be a 330 hitter and 100+ SBs

    • whoamar says:

hell yeah he will, maybe not 330 but 100sb is within reach with 20-25 more walks a yr. I’d rather he do it a Met and stay then do it in minny where only gardenhire will know he did it. They have to keep him esp since they have no comp to get santana.

trade perez if they must, but keep Reyes. He will still contend for MVP most years.

    • pifman says:

Yes, he hit his ceiling at age 24… right genius you are.

  12. skip says:

I go from MetsBlog to MLB Trade Rumors, check my emails, back to MetsBlog and so on. And you guys are right, same s***, different day, or in this scenario, different hour.

    • therealsandman says:

me too. lol im tired of johan unless the mets are seriously involved and the twins are saying they are moving him actually

  13. advantgarde says:

Bogus… Bosox still think they can pawn off garbage to get gold…

People keep saying that the Mets offer is too low, yet nothing that either the Yankees or Bosox have offered have beenall that stellar…

Melky – Crisp are a wash both being 4th OF
    Lester – Hughes – a wash
    the others are still suspect…

So if the mets were to include Ollie Perez or Maine “both proven 15 game winners” where do the other offers trump them?

  14. Slob says:

Anybody know what the deal is with Johan Santana? Where do you think he might be traded? I heard he was on the block.

  15. skip says:

    Where did you hear that?

    • Mets_Rangers 0087 says:

I never heard of this Johan Santana. Who is he??

      • Slob says:

All I know is that he’s a pitcher of some type. Perhaps a reliever. Maybe not. I don’t know. Rumor has it he’s left-handed. I also heard that he’s from Ven… Venez… Veneznotgonnaworkhereanymore.

        • pifman says:

It’s like those commercials of where you need your network to work, except all the places Santana has been talked about going to. Newbostlasantexseacinlasnewbostnewbostnewbostnew…bost…

  16. Mets_Rangers 0087 says:

Mike Francesa actually believes Melky Cabrera will be the next Manny Ramirez. HAHA!

  17. advantgarde says:

    People keep saying trade Reyes… are you people that short sighted… 280 – 300 avg , 10- 15 hr , 40 dbls, 60+ SB + 70+rbis, 100+ runs scored and GG defense… for every 5th day… ARE YOU REALLY KIDDING!!!

do you honestly think you are going to get that type of production out of a D. Eckstein or the likes…

Or are you going to get a person who can change a game in an instant like Reyes does…

So you now get 15 – 17 wins from Sanatana and he loses 10 by a score of 2- 1 or 3 -2 because no one could make things happen like Reyes…

    People get real…

    • Slob says:

Yes. People are actually that shortsighted. And what’s even more amazing is that though even though you’ve posted statistics that don’t even show his true value (look at his EqA and WARP3 if you really want to be impressed) you’ve still managed to come to the conclusion that removing Jose Reyes from this baseball team is absolutely deadly. This conclusion, so obvious to you and I, has proven to be elusive to so many others, despite their insistence that they do indeed watch Mets games and follow the team on a daily basis.

  18. Scarsraider says:

What can we do to sabotage them Sox?

  19. FBones24 says:

The funny thing about these posts is that the same people comment with the same proposed trades, Omar bashing, and comparisons. The truth is WE KNOW NOTHING! Nobody knows what is going to happen including the moronic reporters.

Did anyone at all predict the Tigers/Marlins deal? No! Nobody will predict the next deal….even if it is the Mets getting Santana.

  20. FBones24 says:

…and I’m officially off the Omar bashing bandwagon. I’m going to start giving him credit for not being a sucker. He is the GM of a New York baseball team and despite the pressure, he is not giving into the hype or the fans. Good for him. He will not mortgage th future when it is not necessary. Why offer the farm for Santana or Bedard when other clubs aren’t. I am starting to think differently of the whole situation. He has the cajones to not give into the hype.

  21. gmoney45 says:

Ok, thinking outside the box just a bit. Maine, Gomez or F mart, and Humber, Mulvey or both for Santana. From the Twins perspective I get a good number 2/3 starter, a top rated outfield prospect and two back end guys and also the payroll flexibility they want going into their new stadium. I think they also know that the Red Sox are alot less interested when the Yankees are not in it, and we know that the Mets are desperate and will give this up. From the Mets perspective they get the ace they are looking at and can go out and pick up someone in free agency to fill the rotation hole, and hold onto Pelfrey, who is the one pitching prospect we have who does have overpowering stuff, though he struggles to use it as of now. So a roatation of Santana, Perez, Pedro, Pelfrey and Silva, or a Hernandez is an acceptable group. I would miss Maine, but he would be in the other league and wont be bothering us anytime soon.

  22. gmoney45 says:

Oh, and one other thing. Reyes for Santana straight up is still a bad trade for the Mets. Like advantgarde said above, you dont trade every day for every five days. Ridiculous.

  23. Mets24 says:

    I HATE YOU SCOTT SPIEZIO…..
