perez isnt going anywhere. It would be stupid to even trade anybody for Santana. It would be stupid to give him 7/140 as a free agent, to do it after gutting your farm system is absurd. Cashman seems to have realized this. Pudge Rodriguez sucks. His obp was sub 300 I think.

Actually, even though I love Ollie (in a man-crush way), if they got Dontrelle 1st, I would move him if he could bring back Bedard or Santana, assuming the other parts didn't hurt too much.

Ollie + Gomez + something minor (Humber at most) would be plenty, considering Perez potentially could be as good in the next couple of years as either of these guys, and he is younger.

Only real problem is he is a FA after 2008, which limits his value in a trade. But, say the receiving team could extend him? Maybe even Minn could afford that, Balt really should be able to, if they are willing to extend Bedard.

Lets say, for fun,

Ollie + gomez + Carp = Bedard (santana?)
Humber + smith + schneider = DOntrelle + Pudge.

Plus a few minor parts if needed (B prospects at best).

Lineup up looks the same, with Pudge at C.

Rotation though would be:

Pedro
Bedard
Maine
WIllis
El Duue/Pelfrey

If Pelfrey develops into a legit starter, they break in Mulvey in 2009, in case Pedro leaves.

Man, if they could get Willis back on track, that would be awesome, and great for pitching against the Phils.

ANd no real impact to the team on the field, or key prospects for thenear future.

Well, given how bad he was for the last 2 yearrs, Dontrelle is almost a salary dump too!

But, if the pitching market is that expensive, then he has value anyway.

So, the one top prospect can be Gomez. An almost ML ready pitcher: Humber. Throw in a RP too. Smith? Muniz?

Remember, they are also saving $20 million on the deal.

If they need a catcher, Schneider will replace one of the other talent parts.

Schneider, Humber and SMith? Not risking too much by that!

The Mitchell report isn't even that big of a deal. If he gets outed and suspended, the Mets can keep Estrada (if it happens in time), and save a bunch of money!

forget livan lets try to get jeremy bonderman added to that deal

2008 rotation
1) Santana
2) Pedro
3) Bonderman
4) Willis
5) Maine

that my fellow met lovers would have to be top three if not best rotation. please comment who you would think we would have to add for bonderman and what the final trade would look like if we can get this done

So if Ollie is in a Johan deal and you include Gomez then that comes at least close to the yankees offer of Hughes and Melkey which was the best deal on the table. I think if we threw in pelfrey and either humber or maybe some mid level guy it could get done. That leaves plenty to get Dontrelle too. I don't particularly think pudge is worth the extra cost, but Omar is known to like him and I thin the Tigers would insist on him in a package to dump the salary. If so, I think a deal of mulvey, heilman (they need bullpen help considering the uncertain future of Zumaya), and Schneider or Castro. And if they want more I don't care if you give them a guy like jon niese, who is supposed to be a decent prospect. That would make your rotation:
Johan, Pedro, Maine, Dontrelle, and maybe Livan... hoping they put sosa and el duque in the pen, which would make for nice middle relief in front of duaner and billy. AND WE KEEP REYES WOOHOO!!

It's the New York Post. It has to be complete fiction. I'm surprised Pistol Pete Maravich, Theodore Roosevelt, and Gumby weren't named in the deal.

I've been looking through the hardball times (a saber baseball site) page on Willis, and stumbled upon this measurement tool they have called "xFIP." Essentially, the measure asks "If we normalize for defense, park factors, and percentage of long fly balls that happen to become homeruns (research has shown that hrs/flyballs is usually caused by chance), what would the pitchers ERA be?" In other words, if we took out factors that are the most influenced by chance, what would the era be? It's a experimental measure, and I'm not sure how much I buy into it, but it shines an interesting light on Willis.

Year xFIP ERA
2004 4.33 4.02
2005 3.82 2.63
2006 4.69 3.87
2007 4.76 5.17

If we put any stock into this statistic, it seems to argue against the idea that Willis used to be a great pitcher and is now crap. Instead, it seems like Willis was never that great, and that he has fallen back closer to what the saber statistics expected him to be. Just something to think about when we throw prospects names out there...

If we were able to acquire Santana with a package that included O Perez, then we could say that without Duaner's taxicab accident, we'd never have been able to acquire Santana.

If the Twins were to trade Santana for a package that included Oliver Perez, getting both Santana and Dontrelle doesn't seem to me out of the question.

I'm assuming that including Perez in the Santana deal would mean we could do that trade with 3-4 players --- not completely emptying the cupboard.

I get the impression that the supposed Dontrelle/Pudge deal would be more about the Tigers unloading salary than about their getting a huge amount in return.

But, in any case, I wouldn't acquire Pudge until the Mitchell report is out.
