…if the Angels, Dodgers or Mariners turn their attention from Erik Bedard, and decide to compete with the Mets for Johan Santana, the Mets will lose…
…as i wrote earlier, there is more and more buzz coming from Nashville suggesting that the Twins are feeling a ton of pressure, from their fans, from ownership, from the media, etc, to get a big-time return for santana, and for more than is being offered…if this is the case, i do not see how the Mets can convince them that Carlos Gomez, Mike Pelfrey and Kevin Mulvey will satisfy their fans and help their new general manager’s potential legacy…
…on the other hand, from what i recall, Johan Santana wants to play for the Mets or Red Sox, followed by the Yankees, and he has a no-trade clause and can essentially dictate his fate…by the way, he is still very good friends with Luis Castillo, and has the same agent as Jose Reyes…
…the Red Sox will not up their offer, and Yankees are hampered by payroll, reports the Daily News, as hard as that is to believe…however, the Mets are not only willing to overpay in talent to wrangle santana from the Twins, they’re also willing to overpay in dollars to convince him to stay in queens…

according to WFAN, the previous 3 way trade (A’s, Mets, Twins) with Reyes is not true…
Of course, WFAN is just as reliable as MLBTraderumors at this point.
A package of Gomez, Pelfrey, Mulvey, and Heilman could probably do it.
If they wanted to go all out including Fernando Martinez would probably seal the deal.
substitute John Maine for Pelfrey and you may have a deal
let me amend that. Maine, one of Humber or Mulvey, Heilman and Gomez may pique their interest
Not worth it if we get Bedard for Martinez, Pelfrey, Heilman and Humber.
It is sad that the Mets fan base has bit into this “win at all costs now” mentality. Keep the prospects. LET THE KIDS PLAY!
Dude, it’s been 21 loooong years. Now that we’re close, those of us who have suffered through those two-decades-plus, of course we want to win now. Add to that the age of key parts like Pedro, Alou, Delgado, etc. The time is now.
Yes, yes, I understand your logic fully.
the problem is, what are the odds that the “kids” are successful?
Not slim to none, but the odds aren’t in our favor, especially with this being baseball where 30% is amazing.
M’s don’t have enough expendable talent to offer.
The Blue Jays would probably go Lincecum if they’re making a deal.
Angels don’t need a starter, they need bats. All of their young hitters are untouchable outside of Willits maybe if they are getting a pitcher.
Ditto for the Dodgers, and Broxton is definitely untouchable.
I think there is a chance that Gomez, Pelfrey, Heilman and Mulvey is just as or even more attractive than Lester, Crisp, Kalish/Lowrie and Masterson, but what do I know.
Right now, for Santana it’s really Mets vs. Red Sox. This is giving the Mets leverage in that competition.
For Bedard it’s Minaya vs. MacPhail. There are no teams that have the expendable talent and are in the running. Omar is obviously willing to give up as much as Gomez/Martinez, Pelfrey, Heilman and Humber for Bedard, but will MacPhail think that is enough for Bedard?
These Santana talks say to MacPhail “Bedard’s value may or may not be like this again. We need to rebuild. Heilman is great for the bullpen, Gomez/ Martinez is a great hitting prospect, and Pelfrey and Humber have a lot of upside. It’s now or never. We can’t even hold on to Bedard for the long term anyway.”
Expect to see Santana or Bedard in Mets jerseys.
John Maine would get it done
He shouldn’t be traded either (at least not as part of a big package).
Maine won 15 games last year, and it’s not unreasonable to believe he can win more this year. In fact, his numbers could be similar to what some of the so-called aces will end up with.
That’s what I’m sayin’! Dump Maine and Church and get us a TRUE ACE
Dump Maine? Are you nuts?
Sorry, I don’t get all the facination with him. He’s a 3-4 starter at best, imo
The guy is cheap, under control, young, and a 15 game winner. You do not trade that!!
I dont understand where the hate on maine is from…
i will give you he is not in the same league as a santana, but he has a nice fastball to go along with a good head. He had a great season last year… he can be a very nice backend of a 1-2 punch.
That trade had no chance of happening. And Matt, c’mon man, go out on a limb one way or the other. We all love this blog because of you and your dedication and fandom and we want to hear your opinions — the best post this year was your post yesterday morning where you finally sounded like a fan when you expressed your desire to do whatever’s necessary to get a frontline starter. Keep up that work, don’t play it safe.
That was the opinion. It hasn’t changed.
How often would you like me to repeat that exact same post?
Matt,
I wasn’t saying that you should repeat your posts or opinions, rather that you shouldn’t be afraid to go out on a limb when you have one rather than simply presenting both sides of the argument, because we value your opinion and I personally enjoy contention among fans.
Well, hasn’t stopped you to this point! :-)
I think my comment was misunderstood. I wasn’t saying that Matt should’ve taken an opinion on the crazy 3-way trade, I was responding to this specific post (that he is or is not confident on Santana coming to the Mets).
i don’t want santana. he’ll cost us the farm plus 150 million. id rather a joe blanton or aj burnett for less. and there is no way i ever trade reyes! i know were very focused on a SP, but the bullpen was a big problem and from what i can see all the good RP are signing… also id like to see omar get aaron rowand i know it was a contract year but i think he’s a great player who will bring consistency to a very inconsistent lineup
Who cares how much money it will cost us? We’re a big market team and should start acting like one.
Why are people forgetting that Johan Santana is the BEST PITCHER ON THE PLANET? So you would rather have AJ Burnett and his crazy contract even though we all know he can’t stay healthy for a full season?? That makes no sense. I’m not getting my hopes up about this, but honestly, Omar should do whatever it takes short of trading Reyes or Wright.
But does that honestly mean Santana is going to say I am only going to the Mets?
The Mets could have Santana if they package Fernando Martinez, Kevin Mulvey, Mike Pelfrey and may have to include Gomez or Heilman
I really believe that. They’re not out of reach. They just don’t want to overspend.
Um, how do you know this?
Do it Omar…Do it
I believe there are only a handful of teams that Johan would sign with right now on the dotted line — Mets, Red Sox, Yankees, and maybe either LAA or LAD. However, I get the feeling he may not have the West Coast teams on his list. It may be just the Mets, Red Sox, Yankees. At any rate, count the Mariners out. And I think the Mets have the edge on the Angels and Dodgers for his long-term services. If that’s the case and he won’t sign a long term deal right away with LAA or LAD or the Mariners, then the Mets have an edge here.
It’s crazy and him not going anywhere for now also seems very realistic. But at least the Mets are back in it.
I wonder what it’s like on Pirates Blog. Do people post about fiscally responsible moves and future prospects? Regardless who cares what they do because we are a big market team. I promise to buy an extra beer and Premio sausage at every game I attend if it nets us Santana.
A deal of Gomez, Heilman, Pelfrey, Mulvey could probably do it.
Fernando Martinez would seal it. They just don’t want to go that far.
Considering Johan’s ability to nix a trade, and the cost of keeping him, the Mets are in this. The Sox have no reason to offer more since their main impulse was to block the Yankees. They don’t care if he goes to the Mets. That said, what would Minn. accept? I can’t believe, as many here have said, that Pelfry, Heilman, Church, and Gomez couldn’t get this done. Similar to what the Sox are offering, and the Twins won’t ever have to see Johan across the field. That leaves some holes for us, but oh boy…
Since Johan can nix a trade, and since the Mets are one of the few teams that can afford him, I’d say the Mets are in this too. The SOx wanted to block the Yankees and they have no incentive to offer more at this point (unless the Yankees decide to go for broke). The Sox don’t care if he goes to the Mets. And our package of Pelfry, Heilman, Church, and Gomez matches up with the Sox’s offer and prevents the Twins from having to see Johan again. We’d have some holes to fill if it happened, but oh boy…
oops, posted twice by accident; thought server nixed me the first time, so re-typed.
trade that will fix the mets right up: scott kazmir, roco baldelli, al reyes, carlos pena for ryan church, mike pelfrey, philip humber, johnny estrada, carlos delgado, deolis guerra and some minor leaguers
Santana
Martinez
Maine
Perez
Silva
——- I Know I know But it would be nice——–
And Jones why not –LOL–
Rumors are just that rumors. Let us not get worked up over somebodies idea of yanking our chain considering the “collapse” and the mandate by fans to get a Numero Uno starter. If things don’t work out and we can sign an innings eater for the back end then we keep our chips and give Mulvey, Pelfrey and Humber an opportunity in spring training to impress the mgr, coaches and gm and remember that the White Sox won with a bunch of #2 and #3 starters. Why not us? Maine and Perez as they mature under Peterson will win more than 15 games this year and the prospects will get more work in the majors or in the minors to get better.
As hard as it is considering what happened in Sep. sometimes you have to take the emotion out of it and allow the young players to develop and be major contributors for years to come. If the Mets do not make it to WS, but are in playoffs, with current youngsters then I am willing to wait. As I read in a previous post, patience is a virtue, and reaping the rewards of that patience will allow our farm system to hold on to and develop the youngsters.
Here I just ask for Omar and his minions to scout better and pay above the slotted price so that we can reap the blue chips that the Yanks and other have gotten by paying above the slotted amount. I am a newbie so please be gentile with me, I enjoy the back and forth and it makes the off season fun at least. Matt is doing a great job and I do not believe he is a homer, he is just as passionate to see his Mets win or why would he get no sleep just to post his opinions and rumors, I don’t think so.
If no one wants to deal then just come home Omar and lets look at what FA’s we can use and protect the farm system. There will be FA pitchers next year, I hope.
Johan’s agent: Mets are in it.
http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/wm/archives/2007/12/johans_agent_he.html
I agree totally
With the upcoming draft, and another year of seasoning, who knows what can go on with the mets next year.
Agree also. See that the collapse in some ways had to do with the lack of leaders in the clubhouse. The veterans were “bored” or not into leading. Wright will move into this role more, and I think Reyes will learn that it’s on his shoulders too. It’ll be very enjoyable to watch them mature and take charge. I’m okay with watching the farm develop also, but would be excited with an ace!
we are going to have an ace by the time its all done or we are going to get two good pitchers who equal an ace say a blanton and silva we can get at least 13 wins from each of them and if pedro plays the whole season you all know pedro will put up his 15 and 8 season not to mention john maine is on his verge to becoming a very very good pitcher who can get 14 15 wins or more perez i dont know he might go 13and13 …
Of course “his” agent says the Mets are still in it. The more teams involved the better a chance some team gets desperate and over bids for an ace. It’s all about getting his client out there so he can make his mega-bucks. Man, to tie up that much money in a pitcher makes me nervous and then for all those years, ugh! Patience my fellow metsies, the team we have now, as is, will compete next year and with a bit of tweaking make it to playoffs and WS. Hey anything can happen, look at Rockies and Cardinals in 2006. How many years have the Yanks and Sox had a roster that was the bomb only to bomb in the playoffs. The new attitude should be, patience with prospects, unless you get blown away with an offer and develop, keep and enjoy for 5-6 years before they get arbitration and then you can decide to move ‘em or pay them which should not be a problem in NY. Pedro will surprise us with his new found health and show us in his walk year that he is still a great pitcher.
Indiana fan here. Here’s the deal. Maine, Pelfrey, Gomez, & Martinez for Santana. If you can’t accept that, then there’s no ace for you. I’d hate to see Martinez go but that’s what it will take.
No thanks for that.
I’m not saying that’s what they should do, only saying that’s what it will take.
The the price is too high. That’s way higher than what the Sox are offering. I think we could get it done with less, but frankly had moved on from Santana dreams. Now it seems totally unreal getting him, especially if the Twins are so unmovable.
