Poll: Keep Fighting, or Cut and Run
In the Daily News, John Harper explores whether the Mets are currently ‘paying a price for their recent free-agent splurging,’ which, while it helped ‘make them a contender again,’ it also cost them a first-round draft choice in 2006, ‘the year the Tigers drafted Andrew Miller, the
Dodgers drafted Clayton Kershaw and the Yankees drafted Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain, all in the first round or as supplementary first-rounders.’
…Gotham Baseball Magazine’s Mark Healy has been quite vocal about how he believes the Mets must shake up their scouting and player development departments, for exactly this reason…i understand this point of view…the fact is, only Joe Smith, Fernando Martinez and Mike Pelfrey were picked up on omar’s watch, while the rest of his current crop of trade bait had been picked under previous management…the thing is, as harper points out, what have you done for me lately, omar…yes, Kevin Mulvey and Eddie Kunz, and a few others, are looking strong, but it’s early, and they are by no means on the level of kershaw or miller, among others…
…honestly, this is not my cup of tea…i don’t follow the draft very closely, and i do not pay very close attention to the league’s youngest of players, mostly because the odds of any one person developing in to an impact player is so, so small…to me, there are just too many other elements to keep track of…that being said, i hear the criticism of omar and his staff, who are equally to blame in how this club is selecting young talent, and so it’s quite clear that this criticism is warranted…especially since they can’t make a trade today…i’d like to hear other opinions on this…
Given the limited free-agent market, and their lack of quality minor-league talent to trade for a pitcher, Harper suggests that the Mets reconsider trading Jose Reyes to the Twins for Johan Santana, writing…
“I still say the Mets would have a better chance of winning a championship over the next few years with David Eckstein as their shortstop and Santana as their ace than they do at the moment with Reyes as the lead-off hitter on a team that desperately needs a No.1 starter.”
