Quote: Twins thoughts on Mets Prospects
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 5, 2007 4:38 pm

In a report for Newsday, Ken Davidoff writes…

“The Twins are not high on nearly all of the Mets prospects in the high minor leagues, a source close to the situation said.”

…i have read that comment four times now, and i still have no idea what the source is actually saying…does this mean the Twins are in fact high on guys from single-a, like, say, Deolis Guerra…or does it mean they like some of the Mets top prospects, like Phil Humber, but not all of them, like Mike Pelfrey…or does it mean something else…anyway

…as i wrote earlier, from what i can gather, the problem the Mets are having in these deals, including talks with the Twins, is not necessarily their upper-level prospects, all of whom actually hold fairly solid value on the trade market…the problem, as i understand it, is that to acquire a player like Johan Santana, the Mets must give up an established hitter, who is young and under control, i.e., Jose Reyes or Ryan Church, not minor-leaguers who are still in need of development, like gomez or martinez…the thing is, while most teams understand that David Wright and reyes are too much to give, church is not enough…

So throw in Luis Castillo. He was so upset to leave the Twins, let’s make everybody happy.

    Say it isn’t so…

Honestly, I would rather have Reyes than Santana….

      BTW, its from mlbtraderumors.com,
      here’s the post
      Santana/Reyes/Haren Blockbuster In The Works?

Just got an incredible rumor from a trusted New York sportswriter. Stay with me, because this one’s crazy. But rest assured that if the source wasn’t good, I wouldn’t post it.

Minnesota has initiated talks for a three-way blockbuster with the Twins and A’s. Here’s how it would go down:

Mets send Jose Reyes, Kevin Mulvey, and Hector Pellot to A’s
A’s send Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson to Mets
A’s send Dan Haren to Twins
Twins send Johan Santana to Mets

Mets get Johan Santana, Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson
A’s get Jose Reyes and Kevin Mulvey
Twins get Dan Haren and Hector Pellot

The source says Haren is exactly the type of player the Twins want for Santana, a cheap frontline starter. It’s known the Mets would hate to deal Reyes but they would get some value beyond Santana. Billy Beane is happy because he gets Reyes for one more year than he had Haren plus longtime favorite Mulvey. And, he’s out of Crosby’s contract.

      Thoughts?

      • astoriametsfan72 says:

ain’t gonna happen. that deal is too complex to ever happen. too many cogs.

      • dave27 says:

Thoughts? The whole reason Haren is on the market is that he is NOT going to be chepa for long. So Minnesota is taking on one problem starter for another.

If the Mets were willing to give up Reyes, why the heck would Minnesota agree to let a league rival get him while they get nothing but more trade talks involving Haren.

3-way trades almost never work- tell this ’source’ to go back to the NBA.

Someone being a little too cute.

  3. recoton1 says:

Essentially, this is the same blog post that hasn’t changed since Monday. We aren’t getting Santana so can we please stop reporting on this already? PLEASE? Its getting regoddamneddiculous at this point.

  4. therealsandman says:

    lets trade omar for santana

  5. oshman800 says:

i would trade church in a heart beat

    • extrawhitemeat says:

Seriously.. the “church is not enough” comment above is the understatement of the century…

Maybe if Omar got more back for Milledge, we’d have at least one player othe then Reyes that the twins want…

So much for the theory that that trade was to help us get pitching.. just the latest stinker from Omar.

      • pifman says:

So I have a question… if we need proven major league hitters why don’t we trade for them and use those players acquired to get Santana? Especially if they just want another 2 players of the caliber of Church it shouldn’t be too difficult to do, then throw in Pelfrey and Gomez or something and you’re golden. Say, Tejada and we eat some contract like previously mentioned then go ahead with the 3 way deal there and use Pelfrey instead of Mulvey and maybe add in Carp or just add Pelfrey on top of Mulvey. I have no idea if that would be accepted or what it would take to get Tejada or a similar caliber player but then again I’m not Omar Minaya so I don’t have to do the job he should be doing.

  6. PC521 says:

I don’t think trading Reyes would be smart at all. Give them top prospects like F-Mart, Humber, and Mulvey and some major league ready talent like Joe Smith and Ryan Church

  7. The Stache says:

You lose credibility when you mention the Yankees offer included Miguel Cabrera and Phil Hughes.

How could the Twins say no to Miguel Cabrera? I wish the Mets could trade players that weren’t in their system or on their roster.

    :)

  8. Achilles400 says:

Please stop mentioning Church as a trade chip, un;ess you are talking about a backup bullpen catcher.

  9. Pedro says:

jeez, I’m getting so sick of people ripping our farm system, its pathetic already. This whole process has been so redundant…we know we can’t get an ace with our kids, lets MOVE ON!!

What I don’t get is, If the Twins hold on to Johan (which it seems like they might), thats the worst situation possible, why do that?? According to sources, Johan has said that he would veto any deal in mid-season which means that if the Twins don’t deal him by the season, they get nothing besides some draft picks. Chances are…the picks they get from the team that signs him (mets, sox, yanks) will not be great picks and not as good as the players they are being offered (F-Mart, Gomex, Ellsbury, Hughes, etc). They may get desperate soon

    • extrawhitemeat says:

The post doesn’t rip our system at all.. it says they want guys who are more proven on the big leauge level, then a guys who are just in the minors..

Guys like Hughes, Melky, Ellsbuy, Lester, Bucholtz, who have all had ML success… but are still young and affordable

We don’t have a lot of those guys….

  10. MacD81 says:

I think Omar would agree with me when I say that that quote is “mind-bottling.”

  11. stickguy says:

I know what Crospy is, but who is Dan Johnson?

  12. breadclock says:

Ryan Church = established hitter, young, under control

    ROFL!

C’mon seriously now, enough of the Church koolaid propaganda. Unless you’re also secretly writing for The Onion and just got confused which site you were writing for, this nonsense has to stop. You’ve got thousands of readers gagging on vomit when you spew that Omar spin.

  13. therealsandman says:

    has anyone read this?

which if im omar i kno im gonna get killed for this, i do this in a hearbeat

Mets get Johan Santana, Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson
A’s get Jose Reyes and Kevin Mulvey
Twins get Dan Haren and Hector Pellot

    • Slob says:

You would trade Jose Reyes AND two more players for one pitcher who you’ll have to pay 150 mil to keep… in a heartbeat?

WHERE ARE ALL OF YOU GETTING YOUR DRUGS?

      • Head First says:

Apparently not from the Twins. They aren’t high. On Mets prospects or anything else. Maybe if we introduced them to Towlie?

  14. metzor says:

I think this post brings up a good point as to why the Mets can’t make a deal for an ace. As far as prospects, some are good, some aren’t. As for players, reyes/wright/beltran may be asking too much, but then who do we have to offer that makes it worth it for the other team? I think our prospects have more value than they get credit for, but as far as major league players, what do we have to offer besides the aforementioned untouchables or players under a huge contract? Not a whole lot. And our prospects aren’t nearly good enough to do what the tigers did and send only prospects in return for good ML players. It’s a tough spot Omar is in.

  15. cmon_mets08 says:

Why can the Twins just say “NO” to the Mets and move on to other teams? Stop toying with our emotions.

  16. At this point, there’s no need to even go after Santana. We have what we have. Omar dealt Milledge, a player who is far closer to playing in the ML than Gomez or Martinez. That was pretty much waving the white flag for the meetings. I know we’re not talking about Strawberry here but Milledge was the ‘best’ non-pitching prospect they had. When I say that, I don’t mean the player with the most potential, but the player who is closest to becoming an everyday player.

I think it’s just one of those years. The bright side is that the NL East became weaker today with D-Train and Miggy leaving. You still have the (I am gagging as I type this) reigning NL East Champs to contend with…the team to beat, The Phillies…cough, cough…sorry, I had a little vomit in my throat.

If they go and trade all their pitching prospects away, I’d be disappointed…more than that. If they trade Reyes, I’ll crap a brick with my name on it and they can put it in the fanwalk in front of Citifield…no charge.

  17. ed fever says:

MLBTR had a report a few days ago about the twins finding songle A guys in teams systems – finding young diamonds in the rough – something they prided themselves on – used the castillo trade as an example

  18. BJCHNIC says:

I never believed that the Red Sox had any real interest in Johan Santana. Unlike the Mets or Yankees, they hardly have a need for him. The reports published over the last twenty-four hours seem to indicate that they merely sought to drive up the price on Santana for the Yankees, but aren’t willing to part with premium prospects and dollars to acquire him.

Already, the Twins have turned their attention to the other clubs that made overtures for Santana prior to the Winter Meetings. Unless the Twins and Red Sox can come to an agreement, or Minnesota chooses to re-engage the Yankees, you could argue that the Mets – who lack the depth in their minor league system that their closest competition for Santana possesses – present the more attractive offer; at least, for the moment.

As a Mets fan, you hope that the cost in players and money is too rich for the blood of any of Santana’s top suitors, particularly the Dodgers and Angels, and that the Mets can sell the Twins on quantity over quality.

Best case scenario for the Mets: Santana remains with the Twins in 2008.

So far, so good where that’s concerned.

    • Absolutely…he’ll become a hired gun before the trade deadline (provided Twins aren’t in it) and then hit free agency. He’ll then just cost money…something easier to comeby than prospects…

  19. etyler88 says:

please post the three way deal mentioned. I am outside 1060 listening area.

  20. toomanyuniforms says:

    Yeesh. Bobby Crosby?

  21. scottmetsfan says:

you’re right. i couldn’t possibly have nearly thought of a way to express that or to not even make an attempt as such in an even more meaningful method
