Blog: WFAN’s next Play-by-Play Person
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 6, 2007 7:57 pm

At his blog for Newsday, media-watchdog Neil Best lists Andy Freed, the voice of the Devil Rays, as the leading candidate to replace Tom McCarthy as play-by-play broadcaster for Mets games on WFAN next season.

Also, Best writes that SNY will likely show road games in HD format next season.

I’m sure if he’s not up to snuff, Rick Peterson can fix him in 15 minutes.

I am glad it’s not Ed Coleman. I think he does an excellent job in the role he’s in – but whenever he fills in and does play by play, I feel it sounds awkward and he just can’t stay with fast moving plays – he stumbles over his own words…….

    just my 2cents

agreed .. I like Eddie’s role as Mets guy, but even his work with Joe B this week has been awkward; he talks over people, gets too tangential, and creates awkward moments.

  3. KinersKornerman says:

What about Kevin Burkhart? He and Howie would be great

  4. loopenark says:

    The HD would be awesome!!

  5. Dave and Hosay says:

Scott Graham, who grew up a Mets fan, is also a leading candidate…and I have it on inside source that he wants the job, and made a point to tell the FAN that he was a Mets fan growing up, which apparently peaked their interest

Heard a lot of Scott Graham from the old Atlantic 10 TV package. Not terrible.

I could not (respectfully) disagree more. Living in the Phillies local market, I hear Scott Graham a lot. He could be the corniest broadcaster in history and when he is paired up in the booth with Larry Andersen, I actually contemplate cutting off my own ears. Unlistenable. When you add Chris Wheeler to the mix, the Phillies could have the worst broadcast team ever. Only Harry Kalas saves that crew from being a total disaster and even Harry has lost a little on his fastball.

  6. DannyPhantom says:

How bad do you think Freed wants this job? One minute you’re the radio voice of the Devil Rays, the next minute you are the voice of the Mets?

  7. Under the category of keeping up with the Jones, they better broadcast away games in HD format since their crosstown rivals have already beaten them to the punch. Last year all Yankee games were broadcast in HD on Yes. There is no excuse for a New York team, regardless of sport, home or away, to not be broadcasting games in HD.

    GET GARY THORN BACK!!!!!

  9. KinersKornerman says:

only if Tom agrees to take the mound every 5 days and do the games on the other 4. AND do NOT pair him up with Darling. Those two would discuss the finer points of finger pressure on a backup slider all game long. Sheesh.

  10. Bucknerfan says:

Glad McCarthy is gone. If I heard him say “He went down swinging on strikes” one more time I was going to become a Phillies fan.

It’s the Rays- not the Devil Rays!
and im fine as long as they keep the talent on sny the same

this devils ray guy will tell us how bad kazmir is

this passage from a Newsday column today speaks volumes about what’s wrong with the mets and their disinformation campaign. the mets are the laughingstock of baseball, trading away a top prospect for spare parts because he’s too scary for them and willie doesn’t know how to teach winning players. what a sad and feeble organization…

“As for the doubt, the Mets like their trade of Lastings Milledge to Washington for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider. Officials from other teams don’t. And word is that the Milledge trade further hurt the Mets’ chances of landing Haren, as Oakland general manager Billy Beane still likes Milledge.

Said one competing official: “It’s been a bad two weeks for the Mets.” That seems like a generous understatement.”

    • Bucknerfan says:

More like bad 3 months. Is there anyone else who thinks Omar’s future is now directly tied to the success of Jose Reyes?

      • TenTonHammer says:

I don’t see how you can draw that concusion.

        • Bucknerfan says:

If Reyes’ 2008 season more closely mirrors the second half of 2007 than the first half, and this team struggles without a front line starter to a second place finish there will be plenty that will blame Omar for not including Reyes in a deal.

Let me guess….Wallcae Matthews wrote this.

  14. Sometimes I listen to the FAN, sometimes I don’t [during Mets games.] I like to listen in online to Mike and Mad Dog, just to hear about my New York sports. (I really dispise Philly teams and refuse to listen to Sports Talk 950.

Anywoo, I still can’t get over Tampa Bay RAYS. haha. Devil Rays sound better, but who’s counting.
