…so, most of the league’s general managers, including Omar Minaya, are set to leave Nashville within the next few hours…meanwhile, Johan Santana is still on the Twins, Dan Haren is still on the A’s, and Erik Bedard is still on the Orioles…
…the final bit of buzz, which is supported by logic, suggests that the Twins are leaning towards keeping Johan Santana for opening day, since the major-league ready hitter and pitcher they must acquire for him are not being offered…and so,
because a package like Jon Lester, or Carlos Gomez, or Phil Hughes, will likely be available in July, as well as now, it makes far more sense to get one more round of ticket sales out of santana, while also getting another shot at winning, all while knowing they can easily revisit the same ol’ trade offers in six months…frankly, the same can all be said for bedard and haren…
By the way, according to the Sports Hernia, citing Ken Rosenthal’s 53rd update of the hour and 413 other websites…
“The ‘Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Mariners, Dodgers, Indians, Rockies, Cardinals, Tigers, Giants, Blue Jays, Orioles, Angels, White Sox, Athletics, Cubs, Brewers, Rangers, Phillies, Braves, Astros, Pirates, Nationals, Diamondbacks, Marlins, and Padres are all engaged in the Santana talks and could potentially have the necessary chips to land the left-handed ace.”
…well played, sports hernia…well played, indeed…
…i mean, it actually feels like the Hot Stove took steps backward during these Winter Meetings, instead of steps forward toward completing a deal for these guys…such is the Hot Stove, though, for better or worse…

Full month vs 2 months will net different players in return. Also, signability is decreased if the player is on your team for only 2 months.
**Full season
Off topic, but ESPN Radio (Max Kellerman show) is talking about the possibility of Burnett for Helman.
Kellerman can go punch himself in the face.
Injury prone or not, Burnett for a jar of mayo would be a steal.
Heilman can outpitch a jar of mayo any day.
I’m going to have to stop visiting this site so often, I’m getting sick from this rollercoaster ride of rumours :-).
exactly…….. you think when you go to the site there’s gonna be some huge good news blog…… been a huge let down….
Ironically, the one team they didn’t mention - Devil Rays - easily have the talent to acquire Johan
didn’t Johan threaten to exercise his no-trade mid season or am I wrong?
I think so.
Also, I wonder his reaction to this. Let’s say he starts for the Twins and blows out his arm? He won’t be traded and won’t be able to sign that extention.
He may want to force a trade now.
As he should.
“didn’t Johan threaten to exercise his no-trade mid season or am I wrong?”
A little bonus will help change his mind.
He could always accept a trade as did Piazza, and NOT sign an extension, as an audition. His risk that he might get hurt. Could take out his own insurance policy.
Twins don’t get as much, he gets full value as a Free Agent.
He ain’t auditioning for anyone
So basically we no longer have Lasting and we have more aging average talent. Thanks a bunch.
Don’t forget the 230 hitting Schneider who’s going to cost us over $10mil for 2 years
I agree, I need a rumor/blog break. Great job Metsblog for capturing every rumor out there, but it got to be too much. It got to a point where I became numb to each rumor because things changed every minute depending on which person you spoke to. Wake me up when an actual deal is consumated.
Yep, they just dont make Baseball Winter Meetings like they used to.
The Mets need to replace Glavine’s innings now, without sacrificing their chances of landing a pitcher at the trade deadline.
I want them to go after Silva at this point. They could always package him later if need be (give him a bigger signing bonus with a more managable salary).
What about Pedro?
That line of thinking makes no sense from the Twins point of view. If that’s what they are really thinking (that waiting till the trade deadline will net them the same players). No team is going to give them 3-5 top prospects/major league ready talent for a two months of service. Odds are those players will be making contributions to there teams and won’t be so easily replaced.
I think the Twins are trying to draw this whole trade scenario out. The longer they take to make a decision, the more panicky the other teams get. Forcing the other teams to increase there offers. Look at how desperate Omar Minaya has become. He is practically ready to hump the Twins GM’s leg to get something done.
It’s all a game of chicken.
Do you turn your sights to Dontrelle? I have a feeling he is going to get eaten alive in the AL, so he might come cheap later on.
He won 20+ games young, teams will not give up on him until he develops a coke habit. Even then he’ll get 4 more chances.
And pitch a No Hitter for the Yankees…
the deals rarely go down in the event itself, the Tigers and Marlins deal in and of itself threw a tremendous wrench into the system, the Twins have to seriously consider the level at which they can compete in the coming couple of years and whether 2008 is worth a run and deal with either a weaker package of prospects in July, or having to take a draft pick and supplemental pick.
I am not an expert on the compensation, but I think the three most likely desitnations in free agency for Santana would still be Mets, Yankees or Red Sox, all three should still be among the 6-8 best teams in baseball in 2008, and that puts that 1st round pick at the bottom of the draft.
If I am the Twins, no way would I want a 22nd or higher pick in return for Santana, plus a supplement pick. Nor would I want the idea of facing Santana for 5-6 years as a member of the Yankees or Red Sox, especially since they are a resourceful franchise that manages to remain competitive.
I think Santana to the Mets is a no brainer, I think the Mets are just struggling with giving up Fernando Martinez.
I hope your right about the Mets being a no brainer. I am not sure how much “having” to deal him to a National League team is a factor for them, though. I can understand the not wanting to trade him in there division. But, they probably realize that the only place, where Johan (on the Yankees, Red Sox, or Angels) would hurt them is in the playoffs. And they can’t realistically think they have much shot at the post season. At least in 2008 anyway.
I think they are looking for the best deal. Hopefully, it’s from the Mets….
that sounds great Matt, the whole part about waiting to trade him in July…
… the only problem is, he has a full no trade clause and has stated that he refuese to waive in during the season..
…how do people get amenisa to the important parts of these stories…
.. I keep reading “teams are not willing to do that for a one year rental” … he (santana) also refused to lift the no trade clause without an extension…
The Winter Meeting are that girl you dated in high school. You know the one I’m talking about.
she was soooo hot, but wouldn’t give it up…that one, right?
please omar just trade heilman and any combination of prospects. pelfrey mulvey and humber will never be johan santana. gomez and fmart may become great but thats a risk i think we can all live with.
Who cares if FMart and Gomez go onto become all stars? Johan will contend for a Cy Young for each of the next 4-5 years. Then the trade is a wash.
The Twins don’t want that package of prospects from the Mets … why don’t you guys get that?
“The Winter Meeting are that girl you dated in high school. You know the one I’m talking about.”
The one that fooled around with my best friend or the one with the real hot mom?
the one that gave you the herps
The one with the hot mom who cheated on your best friend AND gave you the herp. Thats a special kind of lady.
Don’t get me started on what kind of girl the trading deadline is.
That one has teeth down . . .
oh her…well at least she gave me something to remember her by unlike these meetings. It burns, but a memory is a memory. Or should that be a memory of her mammary? Bah-dum-dum. Thank you…I’ll be here all day. Anybody here from outta town?
So if she had a hot mom wouldn’t that be the memory of her mammy’s mammary?
Your mics were off, can you do it again?
Never did see the mammy’s mammary, but that didn’t stop me from giving the hammy a slammy thinking about the mammy’s mammary. G-d dammy!
LOL!!!!
nicely
Happy for the bloggers, but what a colossal waste of time and energy for the rest of us. Anyoneone want to calculate the manpower hours lost by US companies beacuse of yutzes like us hitting “refresh” every 10 minuters this past week???
That’s hysterical!
“My name is Joe Yutz….and….I am a Blogger!”
HaHa, love that! This is the first year of baseball meetings I started visiting this site 50 times a day, and what a ride it is. Crazy, but more refreshing than watching TV, and I don’t have to listen to Mike/MadDog ravings to get the latest news. I feel like I know more about the current market for players than they do (I know, not saying much–but never had an alternative info source so easily available before to know how out of touch they are, so thanks for that!).
Wierd that every other ace pitching move is waiting for the Santana dam to burst. If it doesn’t then what happens to all the other potential deals for starters? The Twins seem to be playing this one badly. The Sox got involved it seems primarily to deny the Yankees, to make the deal so expensive in terms of talent that the Yankees backed down. They accomplished that, and so they now have no need to panic into a deal. The only real possibility, in terms of talent and in terms of who can afford to pay Sanatan, is the Mets (especially taking into account Santana’s ability to nix a trade). So it’s the Twins who are backed into a corner now. And if the Mets and other teams look elsewhere to fill their holes the Twins are digging that hole even deeper. What the Twins’ bloggers saying about this?
After this whole ordeal, I am hoping so bad that Pelfrey and the rest of our boys come out of the gate on fire to start this season and make the rest of the league regret undervaluing them.
It’s the only way to play it. You think our guys suck? Ok fine we’ll play them and see who is right.
Also, how could they not feel disrespected? They’ve been dangled in every single trade and everybody has said no thanks. I think they’re going to be ready to show everyone what they can do.
sounds great
except, they all look scared on the mound. they look like a bunch of eli manning’s out there.
perfect analogy.
And if I needed another reason to hate Scott Boras..
ESPN is reporting that there are rumblings from Nashville that Andrew Jones’ contract is 36.2 mill so that he is making more annually than Torii Hunter (18.00 Mill compared to 18.1) God this man drives me nuts
How about a Santana time share? 12 teams each get him for 3 starts…it could be like that guy you picked in the school yard that played on both teams when you didn’t have enough players…hell, they share revenue, why not talent…
The worst thing that ever happened to the Mets was Wilpon buying out Doubleday 6-7 years ago.
The Mets payroll is currently around 90 million dollars (115 million - 12 million for Glavine - 7 million for LoDuca - 6 million for Green - 3 million for Estrada’s salary which they will dump + 2 million for the raise that Castillo got). They’ve cut over 25 million since last year and they now have a new stadium coming which will bring in extraordinary revenue, a new tv network SNY (cash cow), have had incredible increases in gates the last few years, received 20 million yearly in Citifield naming rights, and have increased ticket prices through the roof on us, and they’ll continue to raise ticket prices. It’s time to start acting like a BIG MARKET TEAM and have a payroll that is more than 35% of the NYY and more than 55% of Boston. Even if the Mets added Willis, Pudge, AND Santana…. that would still only put the payroll at around 123 million [95 million + 13 million for Pudge + 7 million for Willis+ 13 million for Santana (his salary this year) - 5 million w/ Schneider going to Detroit]. And Delgado’s and Martinez salaries (combined ~35 million) will come off next year, as will Wagner’s salary (13 million). And thus it should not be a problem to give Pudge the extension for 13 million in ‘09. Yes he might be on the list and yes he is not the same offensive player he used to be- but he is an upgrade both offensively and defensively (especially) over the cr*p catchers we currently have.
And he is a winning player that could help change the culture of this choking franchise.
I’m not saying they have the chips to get Santana in addition to Willis, Pudge, but if they did, MONEY SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE for what is supposed to be a BIG MARKET TEAM.
There is no reason this team cannot have a payroll in the 150 -160 million range, if need be, with all of the incredible revenue streams pouring in! And getting Williis, Pudge, etc. would still only put it at 123 million with the math above- and you can still sign a few relievers, etc. and have it be under 130 million.
I am completely fed up and disgusted with Freddie Coupons, and as I said, the worst thing that ever happened to this franchise was when Doubleday was bought out.
So just sign Livan Herandez, raise ticket prices 20%, and go finish in 3rd place Freddie Coupons..I hate you. I will not spend a penny on this cheap, pathetic team.
And if any of you are happy/content with this, just go ahead and continue to go to games, buy merchandise, etc., and continue to get ripped off by this disgrace of a franchise.
Quiet down Mr. Met.
Same tired rhetoric cut and pasted from past posts of yours. Be creative…..try a new tact.
For all of us long time posters here…your act has just worn so thin
I can’t believe you’re begging for pudge and his bloated contract..not to mention i bet he’s on the mitchell report…
If they would have spent money you just would have complained that they spent it unwisely.
And honestly calling the Wilpons that name is slightly antisemitic.
And honestly calling the Wilpons that name is slightly antisemitic
whoa there. Perceiving someone as cheap (however mistaken that perseption may be) doesn’t automatically translate as anti-semitism.
IN OMAR WE BUST…
Nice going… at this rate we will have more backup catchers than starting pitchers…
I won’t be watching the Pelfry/Humber/Sosa/Lawrence/Park/Williams/TBD debacle anymore. We are already down a starter from last season (Glavine), and I can guarentee that Pedro and El Duque will miss some time this upcoming season (as will our aging starting LF). Well, at least we have Schoenweiss in the bullpen..
Coming off the historic collapse, we are mediocre nest year at best.
Gowrightgo,
Can you provide an intelligent rebuttal (as to why you don’t mind getting hosed for tickets when the payroll is being cut)?
Are you comfortable with the payroll being kept under 100 million (at the expense of bettering the team) with all of the incredible revenue that is pouring in?
Why don’t you provide an intelligent rebuttal instead of just calling me a tired act.
People would respect you more.
Please let me know what you find wrong with my rationale/logic…and tell me how/why you think I’m “out of line” or being unreasonable.
Are you happy that Wilpon bought out Doubleday? Supposedly Doubleday would have signed Guerrero and ARod in 2 seconds because he was tired of playing 2nd fiddle to the Evil Empire.
You are welcomed to post an intelligent rebuttal, as is anyone else. Or to tell us why you are happy with ownership and think it’s fair that they have raised ticket prices while slashing the payroll.
I’d like to see an intelligent response from you, Gowrightgo, or anyone else.
The Mets have raised ticket prices because they can…I’m not saying it’s right but look at EVERY other team in professional sports and tell me what they do… In case you hadn’t looked the Pirates have raised their ticket prices at about the same rate (% wise) as the Mets..and they haven’t had a winning season in 14 years.
If you don’t want to go to games i don’t blame you but I’m also sure there are plenty of people waiting for your season tickets in the new ballpark
Yes after a collapse- you need to do something big/make a splash or two in order to win your p*ssed off fan base back. And Freddie Coupons is not interested in doing that…he only wants to count his $$$.
Cry me a river…We need to make a big splash huh??? Like what? with what prospects?…the reason the mets don’t have any is that they made big splashes in 5 out of 6 years..losing their first round picks…..if you want the same old story..make a big splash in the free agent market and see where it gets you…
Regardless of what is coming or going and any real headway that was made at the meetings….here is the recap that met management needs to take home…..
1) We have no highly thought of pitching prospects - hence…it is time to get some through 3 approaches a) better scouting for the draft and paying above slot…b) better pitching development through improved coaching at all levels of our system….c) trade some of our better positional prospects for big time pitching prospects. (i.e a Gomez for Ian Kennedy type trade)
2) Time to concentrate on getting at least one reliever. Can not go to war thinking that Sanchez will be his old self and that padilla is decent and that Heilman will be here or at least be in the pen. Sign a Dotel or Luis Viscaino or others that I have not seen or heard about and simply move on. Do this quickly.
3) Consider a move of Heilman to the rotation finally. He will be ecstatic and will give us every thing he has in that role. THis is his pre arbitration year meaning if he does well…he could start to get paid real good money as an arbitration eligible starter rather than reliever
4) If you do not believe in Heilman as a starter…..then trade him in a package for one. Even a package for a number 4 type if you can find one
5) Sign either Colon or Silva to a contract. Preferably Colon on a make good one because I think you can still get a guy in a trade that helps the rotation. This way, signing colon does not bog you down for too long
Yeah Carlos Silva is the answer. With his bad ERA, bad Whip. A guy who could not stay in the Twins rotation the last few years. A guy whose turn they skipped over every chance they got.
Fire Freddie Coupons.
I appreciate your goal of stirring up the pot. Contrary to others on the site…I am not interested in a flame war with you. You keep posting away.
But to me you have devolved into something like a one trick pony when it comes to posts. It is the same thing over and over again just cut and pasted from earlier posts of yours.
We all realize you think the Wilpons are cheap and are the reason for the 88 win season and not a 100 win season.
Lets say Omar has the ability to spend $150M next season. What to do? where to spend it?
Lets see…
1) Arod? never coming here this time
2) Posada? never coming here
3) Riviera? never coming here
4) Linebrink? who cares he stunk anyway last year
5) Andrew Jones? already got a CF
6) Eckstein to play 2b? why Castillo is better
7) Riske? maybe an improvement over Sanchez if he is not healthy but just ok. Not big money spent here obviously anyway hence not a money problem for the coupons
8) Dotel? might be on the way
9) LoDuca? Estrada is a better hitter and defender and we are about to cut him plus LoDuca can’t find a starters job can he?
Short list but now you can see. Even with a limitless budget there is nothing attractive on the market now. As to trades for big money guys….we are in on the Santana deal but may not have a match. It is not about not being able to spend the $$ on Santana which is primarily the reason the yanks are out as you have read. Willis and Pudge are again trades and maybe we can get Detroit interested. God knows they have dumped their entire farm system and they have budget issues and will be looking to dump salary.
Point being Mr Met….you can bitch about the past (no Arod in 2000, No Vlad in 2001, etc etc. But right now you are bitching about the impossible. THe money is there to spent. Its the players that are lacking
What the hell is wrong with everyone? we need RELIVERS, not starters and not position players.
In that horrific run last year we had leads that the bullpen blew practically every night. Where is everyone’s head? Don;t they remember this?
Oh yeah one more thing — ***we’ve got 3 friggin catchers***.

I am sick and tired of “small market” teams not even spending the money generated by revenue sharing for their payroll. The Twins have one of the wealthiest owners in baseball
For real. I’d love to see him get stuck with nothing for being a cheap-ass mofo.
