The Mets offered RHP Aaron Heilman to the Rockies on Wednesday in exchange for LHP Brian Fuentes, reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.
However, the Rockies also asked for RHP Scott Schoeneweis, explains Rosenthal, at which point ‘talks
disintegrated.’
In 208 relief appearances for the Rockies during the last three seasons, the 32–year-old Fuentes has a 3.68 ERA including 81 saves while averaging over one strike out per inning.
Interestingly, Fuentes had a 4.50 ERA while pitching away from Coors Field last year, yet a 1.72 ERA while in Coors Field.
Fuentes is eligible for arbitration this off-season, and can be a free agent after next year.
Meanwhile, Heilman will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, and can be a free agent after 2010.

Glad it did not go through. Omar keeps going for age, keep the youth damnit! Still baffeled over Lastings trade.
With you 100%. Why get rid of youth? Especially if maybe –MAYBE — Heilman could be considered for the rotation.
“Talks disingegrated”????? Why wouldn’t we be dying to dump Show for a bag of balls, let alone a guy who could be really good or at least decent? What am I missing here?
Oh I see, they’d have to give up both players. Well, maybe not. Tough to say. I’d have to look it over more, but certainly Show being thrown in should be a plus for the Mets not a minus.
Talent wise its not a fair 2 for 1, but if the Rockies wanted the Mets to pay some of Schoe’s salary too, then I would think the talks would stop right there.
I cant really think of anyone that is reasonable to ask for from the Rockies as a 2 for 2 deal.
Maybe in ST when Heilman isnt going to be a starter, and Dauner looks like a good bet to be a solid reliever, and Joe Smith or Carlos Muniz is looking good enough to make the team, then I might look to pull off that trade with the Rockies taking Schoe’s salary while sending a low level prospect back as well.
Fuentes, Dauner, Wagner, would be a fun 7-8-9 combo to watch all year.
What is with these teams asking for anything and everything, lol
I mean, I’m sure plenty will argue about Heilman being more valuable than Fuentes….and whatever, you can debate away…..but to ask for another reliever too……wtf is with people!?
It seems like other GMs realize Omar’s over a barrel, with the debacle of last year and the new stadium coming next year, so they’re asking for more than market value knowing that he can’t sit back and do nothing…
I’m not sure why there seems to be a rush to trade Heilman, though…never understood why he’s undervalued by his own organization. He’s one of the better RH 7+ inning guys out there…and he’d probably be a comparably good a starter to half the guys out there getting 4/40. Could he be worse than Kyle Lohse, for god sakes?
Because of intense media pressure and the resulting sensitivity to this pressure by the Mets Ownership it appears that the Mets have lost sight of the fact that even with the meltdown they came extremely close to being in the post season last season. They really need only moderate improvement at some spots and do not have to make a back page splash that leaves the franchise impotent in the future.
WHAT!!! if they want schoeneweis give him up! i would trade him for a bag of balls! come on.
Omar is inept….
Not surprised though. Look at who we would be getting.
Yea because that has anything to do with it…
GIVE IT A REST
Maybe they got the rumor backwards…they offered Schoeneweis but when the Rockies asked for Heilman the trade disintegrated…that makes more sense.
Yeah, I don’t see how if you are willing to trade Heilman that Schoenweis would be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
and visa versa i dont see how you wouldnt be happy getting heilman unless you can get old overpaid schoenweiss also
has to be
I don’t really knnow Fuentes but what would be the point in trading relievers? Fuentes is better than Heilman? I can’t really see that. My guess is that the trade came from the Rockies and it was the METS who said FU. Then said maybe if you take Show also.
Fuentes has a bit more of resume than Heilman. He has been a closer and was good enough to make the All-Star team. I’ve always liked Fuentes, but his performance in the postseason didn’t do much for his reputation.
he didn’t happen to give up a go ahead hr did he?
Huh? Isn’t Fuentes an all star?
Lots of guys are All-Stars. Doesn’t mean they’re worth trading a guy like Heilman for.
Huh? I would keep Heilman but give Show away for a bag of balls. Then use the savings to sign Mahay.
I don’t want to hear any Willie bashers next year whine about him bringing in Show.
Someone hand Willie a kleenex, he’s gonna need it with Showenqeiss.
stop shopping aaron and put him back in the rotation already
DO IT!! get the rockies to throw in a prospects and send those two bums out of here!
Sounds like another bogus report from an” Expert”.
1) hes a lefty and are we gonna back-up our lefty closer
w/ a lefty 8yh inn. guy? never seen that before.
2)why woild you not send Scotty gopher-Ball anywhere/
for anything the Min. someones asks?
3) Would Daisy have been coming along as well?
—Cause then your’e talkin’!!—
I wouldn’t see the point in taking our best rightie out of the pen and trading him for another rightie and giving up a leftie. Also, why would you lose that potential flexibility of giving Heilman a shot in the rotation? I hope that the facts were messed up in this trade.
Fuentes is lefty
What would your user name be if Perez and/or Heilman are traded?
Um, MinayaisInept most likely.
ahem…. I think you mean “flexibilitie”
I think you mean “flexibilitie.”
Trade would make no sense. Just trading one reliever for another. Plus I thought they wanted to try Heilman in the rotation, perhaps.
Minaya is an id*t.
This one is puzzling… I agree it must’ve been the Rox offering Fuentes.
I would actually like to get our hands on Fuentes– he has nasty stuff…. Heilman? No way– he has value for a bigger deal, if you trade him at all. How about Ruben Gotay for Fuentes?
1. Why are we interested in this Fuentes guy anyway — pitches better at Coors than on the road?? What is that all about?
2. Is there anyone in MLB that we have not offered Heilman for this offseason? Jeez, the guy gets frustrated for years as the mets mgt keeps him in the pen, and now he is being offered all over baseball for garbage. he must feel great right about now.
exactamundo
schoeneweis is another steroid user whom we could have gotten rid of. what is omar thinking? since when was heilman such a hot commodity?
fuentes has been all star the last 3 years and he wasn’t voted in by fans. among our pitching staff, we didn’t have a single all star
what in the world is going on?
Heilman may have this perceived futility by Mets fans because of sporadic ineffectiveness, but unless we get something in return, his absence would leave a HUGE hole.
Let alone the fact that teams (other than the Mets) value him as a starter. He’s a very versatile asset
This rumor, IF true, really shakes my increasingly weak faith in Omar. Why offer a one-for-one swap of relievers with Heilman, when Heilman can be used as part of a package to get a starting pitcher?
Unless of course Omar was trying to package Fuentes for someone else. But that’s what I thought he was trying to do with the Milledge for Schneider/Church trade, and there’s no indication of that happening.
Mets killed Heilman’s value the past few year- same way Willie and Omar destroyed the value of Milledge, Gomez, Pelfrey, Humber (obviously the guy has no value when you sent out Brian Lawrence and Dave Williams to start instead of him).
Fire met management.
Huh??!!–WRONG!!!–He’s got value he didnt 2 yrs. ago
BECAUSE hes been pitchin’ out of the pen!!
Short memory but, this guy was a BUST as a prospect
when left to start!
You’re a tool..Come up with a new line..same old stuff doesn’t work
Carlos Gomez’s value is so destroyed he’s on the must have list for Johan Santana.
i thought you gave up on the Mets you pathetic sorry excuse for a fan. You can’t even stand up to your own words. Get lost troll.
Ummm……why?
Heilman was one of the bright spots of the bullpen last year. I can’t understand this at all–as others point out, Schoenweis has been disappointing to say the least.
It is becoming clear that Omar is eliminating “attitudes”. Omar sees retaining Willie as a mandate to get rid of those who had the onions to speak up or second guess or show disappointment.
This is becoming more like a staffing issue at the local ladies salon more than a MLB team!
Dump Omar and his little friend, Willie the Mute.
Come on…really?
You never hear about Heilman’s attitude…he marches out there when asked and probably plays hurt. That’s ridiculous
then why the hell would you trade Arron Heilman?
Who’s to say? It’s a rumor…it’s probably either bogus or inaccurate.
But to speculate that it’s because of his attitude with nothing to base it on, is pretty reckless
I’m guessing Omar’s logic is that he will have righties Sanchez, Burgos, and/or Padilla back next year so he is looking to swap Heilman for a lefty. I can’t say it doesn’t make sense, although I like Heilman and have no clue if Sanchez/Burgos/Padilla will be healthy. Heilman is a workhorse.
If that’s his reason, he shouldn’t be fired…he should be shot. When you’ve got a lefty closer and a good lefty set-up guy, why would you trade your only reliable righthanded late-inning reliever for a lefty – let alone one who’s coming off getting shellacked in the world series, who’s 3 years older and making $3M a year more…????
this really cant be true. no one would demand schoeney’s contract. impossible. i wont believe rosenthal until he plays me a tape recording.
Yea, I’m going to have to agree 100%
Totally bogus
The 2007 Winter Meetings:
You know that feeling when you have to sneeze so badly, you reach for that tissue, then it’s gone?…
is that what you kids call it today, “a sneeze”?
Heilman was the only person to have any kind of consistency in the bullpen through the entire course of the season. Yes he gave up some big hits but he was definitely our most reliable reliever the whole year.
I understand wanting to shake up the bullpen after how horrendous is was down the stretch, but getting rid of Mota and getting Sanchez back next year I think accomplishes that to some extent. We could use another arm but giving up our most reliable guy + Show to get someone who is arguably not as good as heilman accomplished what? Something tells me management or the front office isn’t pleased with heilman. If anything I think Aaron should be given a chance during ST to be a starter if we fail to add any this offseason.
they may want Fuentes so they can include Heilman ina trade.
oops…brain cramp.
Ken Rosenthal has reported on 27 trade rumors in three days. None of which came to be. He probably heard a bell boy on one side of the lobby saying “Hail these men a cab.” Then on the other side of the lobby, “the cab fuent that way.”
Needs to be a little more accurate. Here’s a tip…if you save the story for when the deal is more than just lobby chatter, you increase your credibility. If one out of your 35 trade rumors turns out to be correct, that doesn’t make you Peter Gammons. Better luck in ‘08 Kenny.
Omar is a turd.. Tell me how many of you during the season couldn’t STAND schoenweiss, and we have a chance to GET RID of him, and Omar says NO!!!!!
Schoewenweiss was AWFUL last year… AWFUL….. OMAR won’t get rid of him, since it will make him admit he made a mistake signing him over Bradford…
IN OMAR WE BUST..
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Omar has lost his freakin mind.
I would hate to lose Heilman but Show has to go. If the Rockies want him Omar should try to send him along with someone besides Heilman. How can Willie bring him into a game at any point? They got rid of Mota, now if anyone wants Show, SHOW him the door!!!!
just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it’s true. how many untrue rumors must there be until fans stop overreacting to every false rumor out there.
The lack of faith in Omar in this comment section simply astonishes me. He brings us back to respectability and one disappointing year and people want him gone. Besides, nobody knows if this rumor is even true or not, and if it is, there are other factors and details in the trade that we simply do not know, such as who would pick up Show’s salary. That could have been something that they couldnt agree on. The rumor could be wrong, such as the Mets would only make the trade under the condition that the Rockies take Show. There are a number of factors that go into this that arent reported. I personally give the management the benefit of the doubt when it comes to these things. The Rockies could have asked for Show but have Mets pay the entire salary, that kind of thing can kill a trade. Or he simply decided he didnt want to trade Heilman. If Omar had a chance to get rid of Show, assuming his new team would pick up at least a portion of the salary, it would have happened already.
ITS A RUMOR….DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR.
you’re amazing. did you not read the rest of the rumor? it was heilman AND Show. I would love to get rid of Show but not at the expense of Heilman, especially not for another reliever
Ken Rosenthal is a clown. I wish i could get paid for making up ridiculous trade rumors every hour or so
if you’re forming opinions on our GM based on a journalists reported rumor, you really need help. You’re too easily swayed man, take a step back, see the big picture. This is a rumor, not fact. If you think all these rumors are actually true and accurate, then man are you naive.
please dont make the same mistake as last year omar by letting go of good bullpen arms. unless its to get an ace heilman should not be traded.
Suddenly, the Show is valuable…
Fuentes does bring the Funk that Willie likes oh so much!
His ERA discrepency in 2007 can be credited to a 5-game road stretch from 6/22 to 7/1 where he gave up 10 ER in 3.1 IP. The rest of the season, before and after, he was consistently good – only 5 ER in 25 road IP.
Sounds like he was just in a funk for about a week, and if you throw out those 5 appearances his stats look much better.
Omar is on his flight home, right now:
His tie is undone, shirt tail is half-untucked. He is sporting a 5 O’Clock shadow, and he smells like cabbage from now showering for 2+ days…and has a glass of scotch, on the rocks.
He is looking into the bottom of the glass, as a tear trickles down his left cheek oh so slowly. He sniffles….and will begin whimpering silently to himself any moment now.
This is a very curiois report by Rosenthal — on one hand, from the Mets perspective, is there a big enough difference between the lefty set-up man they have in Schoeneweis and the lefty set-up man they would have in Fuentes. I would argue that there’s a HUGE difference — Fuentes is a great pitcher (the only memory we have of him is Damion Easley, but in 2006 he was a pretty dominant closer and would create a great 1-2 lefty punch with Feliciano to pitch to Howard and Utley perhaps in the same time through the lineup. Plus, the Mets would get to unload Schoeneweis’ ridiculous contract that still has 2 years remaining. At the same time, Schoeneweis is serviceable and was actually pretty decent in the second half of the year, and Heilman could be an extremely valuable player to the Mets — envision this…
Heilman becomes a starter, gets 12 wins and posts a 4.5 ERA in New York for a contender — does he then have more value than Carlos Silva? Does he then become the major league ready starter that the Mets can trade at July 31st with Carlos Gomez and Kevin Mulvey for a frontline pitcher?
So, I doubt that Schoeneweis stopped the Mets from making this deal, but Schoeneweis-Fuentes is not an even swap, and while Heilman probably has equal value to Fuentes, he probably has a higher ceiling but creates a big hole in the Rockies bullpen from the left side.
As a starter, I think Heilmann would be about 13-11 sporting a 4.25 ERA, ie- better than Tom Glavine.
Yeah I’ve got to disagree with that. He is inconsistent as a starter and a reliever. The reason he is a reliever is because if he starts pitching badly they just pull him and put someone else in. As a starter it is much harder to justify taking somebody out in the 2nd or 3rd inning every 3-4 games he pitches. Keep him as a reliever so his value stays where it is. If you have him start for a season it could turn out horribly and leave him with no value at all. And he definitely would not do better than Glavine. No way Heilman can pitch 200 innings. And I highly doubt an ERA that low as well. I was at the game where he threw a 1 hitter. He has great stuff but he can’t stay consistent with it for his life. As a reliever he has stretches where he gets bombed and stretches where he dominates. The problem with Heilman is there is no middle ground, he is either lights out or he gets his lights knocked out.
Someone call Schoenweis a taxi…
He’s not in Miami…
this just doesnt make sense, is omar getting desperate?
LOL CERRONE
SHOW IS A LHP NOT A RHP. GLAD TO SEE YOU ARE SPENDING YOUR INCOME FROM THE SITE ON THINGS LIKE EDITORS.
wow, you ruined him
ALSO , MATTY, ISNT IT A “URL”, NOT A “URI” . WOW , SERIOUSLY A LITTLE PROFESSIONALISM AND SPOT CHECKING WOULD’NT HURT.
my lord, t-minus 3 minutes until these comments are deleted
Your comments aside: I think it’s pretty sad that you stole someone else’s moniker, by the way…NO LIFE
Actually genius, ‘URI’ stands for “Uniform Resource Identifier”, but good thing we have you serving as the site’s impromptu editor. Good catch Aristotle.
They actually turned it down? Well in that case…
1.) Thank God
2.) Where do they get off rejecting that deal? Im not sure i understand?
3.)They actually had the nerve to ask for another player?
4.)If they want Shoey so bad, they can have him for Fuentes
5.) Let’s Go Mets!
He did still someone’s moniker…but SHOW is indeed a LHP. He made a valid point.
I DIDNT STILL NOTHIN LOL I JUST TOOK A BREAK FROM THIS HORRIBLE TEAM AND YOU STUPID FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Braves fan turned alcoholic because of the collapse of their “dynasty”?
I could see Tito Fuentes but not Brian.
One year? No, Omar blew it last year.. took a bullpen that was the envy of the league in 2006 and dismantled it.. He got nothing done during last years trading deadline… and did NOT FIRE the manager that oversaw one of the greatest collapses in baseball history, and NOW he has a roster that is overstocked on back-up catchers, and STILL has holes in the starting pitching and the bullpen…
These comments are valid regardless if the proposed trade is a rumor or not..
in OMAR WE BUST.
Dismantled it?
Sanchez was hurt
Bradford left for a better deal
Anyone he traded wasn’t there in 2006
Get your facts straight
I don’t like the trade, but how did Schoenweis talks ruin the trade? Don’t get it.
Fair enough, but it was omar who added Mota and Schoeweneiss where he could have offered a better deal for Bradford.
That said, still need young pitching, and, without it, we will see more Mets baseball like we did in September…
