Buzz: No Chance of Willis to Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 6, 2007 8:18 am

Yesterday, WFAN’s Sweeny Murti broke down a rumor that suggested the Mets could acquire LHP Dontrelle Willis from the Tigers, as well as C Ivan Rodriguez and his $13 million salary.

However, last night, at his blog for Booth Newspapers, Tigers beat reporter Danny Knobler debunked the idea, writing that the Tigers did ‘briefly consider’ such a move, “But it’s barely worth talking about now, because it’s not happening, and the Mets know it.”

According to Adam Rubin, though, in today’s Daily News, citing ‘team sources,’ the Mets believe the Tigers may still look to ‘flip’ Willis, who was recently acquired from the Marlins along with Miguel Cabrera.

“The Mets would be interested in speaking with the Tigers,’ writes Rubin, “but no dialogue is believed to have occurred yet.”

…as i wrote last night, from what i can gather, while the Tigers most certainly would have requested a pretty significant package from the Mets, they’d want RHP Aaron Heilman, as well…

Nevertheless, at his blog for the Bergen Record, Steve Popper writes that while talks about Willis and the Mets may be based on truth, it ‘never came close to actually being true.’

By the way, on his blog for WFAN, Murti writes, “Not a chance this happens. The Mets will have no interest in taking on that much salary and giving Pudge another year.”

…of course, despite their own beat reporter making the above statement on his blog, it has not stopped the radio station’s morning hosts from discussing the deal…

…long live the Hot Stove, i guess

Heilmand and Humber max for Willis and no Pudge. Otherwise, pass.

    • TG1 says:

the mets would have to be insane not to dot his. all your basically doing is addint payroll. what do you think we would have to give up to get willis is the question?? if its humber, heilman and gomes then…BYE BYE BOYS HATE TO SEE YA GO BUT DONT LET THE DORR HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT.

  2. franco45 says:

I’ll admit it- I like Boomer and Carton. It’s an entertaining program.

    • dannyb says:

Ugh, can’t stand them. Carton is the “poor man’s” Dog.

The best morning show they had when they were filling in for the I-Man, was Mike and the Angry Puppy. Gotta say though, Mike & Mike are pure, 100% cheese.

      • MetsMachine says:

Your a moron. MadDog wishes he was half as funny as Carton….not to mention Russo knows nothing about sports. Its a good thing Francesa actually does.

Carton is by far the freshest and best personality on WFAN.

        • diehard says:

AMEN!! I used to listen to Mike & Mike in the mornings bec I wanted sports and Imus didnt offer that, now I cant listen to Mike & Mike anymore Boom & Carton Are THE BEST ON RADIO!! Carton is the funniest guy and he knows his sports!!

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

its definitely an entertaining morning show, good sports stuff and they both have a good sense of humor.

      • napes22 says:

Calling anyone a poor man’s Chris Russo is offensive. The only thing he’s good at is yelling at callers and telling them they are wrong. Carton is a funny guy and knows his sports.

  3. Vinnie says:

How do all of these reporters “know” what they are talking about when every statement that other contradicts the other? They are all full of pompous ass clown syndrome. I hate you all.

    • ridethesnake says:

The first part of your question is the key — how? There is no way a reporter can possibly know very much. If Omar text messages another GM, or calls him, and they discuss something, journalists cannot hear them and even if they do may get the wrong ideas about what is being said. But they do not hear these conversations at all. Then smoke signals are sent out in the forms of PR people and rumor spreaders, for the purposes of positioning, distraction from real rumors ruining real potential deals, and in some cases of poor execs, to find out how public opinion would react to their idea before contacting other GMs.

  4. chew13 says:

    KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

    • napes22 says:

Hope for what? To trade away our thin amount of prospects for pitcher who has been close to awful over the last two seasons? Scouts hate him not – his delivery is a mess and he has had trouble finding the plate…and don’t say the Jacket will fix him. We’d be giving up way too much for a reclamation project.

  5. gowrightgo says:

Considering that the Tigers are not a big market club and really do not have the money to compete with the big time players like NY and Boston….it makes sense that they accepted the trade for both of these guys who collectively will earn close to $20M next season, with an eye on dumping Willis and other dead money.

I actually see the fit with them and the METS in a deal for Willis and for no meaningful starters.

They have just pillaged their farm system rendering it now the worst in baseball. Plus they have likely exceeded internal budgets on payroll in a big way (assumed Renteria and now Willis and Cabrera).

I see a Pudge plus Willis deal centered around getting 2 of our better prospects plus either Estrada or Schneider.

Something like Gomez, Carp, Nathan Vineyard and Humber plus Estrada for Willis and Pudge and one of their infield prospects

  6. Militant Metsfan says:

I do not trust anything that comes from this guy Sweeny Mutri.
He has proven to be an inept reporter these couple of days with his way out there rumors….. but he’s good at telling fairytales…and I stress the FAIRY.

Since when did he become such an authority on the Mets?

If Ed Coleman says it, I’ll believe it.

  7. stellar says:

No way I deal Heilman in a Willis deal. Willis took a HUGE step backward last year, and who knows what he’ll have going forward.

At least we know we have one of the best relievers in the NL in Heilman.

  8. napes22 says:

Does it strike anyone as weird that Willis was essentially a throw in? Scouting Reports on Willis have been terrible over the last two years, and surely don’t need another reclamation project. Pass on Willis – I’d rather keep our prospects and sign an innings eater.

  9. Jmiles says:

HELLO OMAR-Are you listening???-We need help in the bullpen-Remember????-They couldn’t get anybody out.Yes a frontline pitcher would be amazing but we need to win games and we won’t until the Bullpen issue is settled.I’m glad bad Karma Mota is gone-But we need serious arms in the bullpen.
    JM

    • TG1 says:

AGREED. SIGN LOUIS VISCIANO (THE GUY FROM THE YANKEES) AND DOTEL. IF SANCHEZ COMES BACK THEN YOU HAVE THE BEST BULLPEN WITH JOE SMITH ONLY GETTING BETTER AND FILICAINO STILL!

BUT REALIZE YOU STILL NEED WILLIS AND IF YOU GUYS THINK PITCHING ON A WINNING TEAM WILL DO NOTHING FOR HIM YOUR NUTS!!

  10. gmoney45 says:

The problem with Willis is he got too big. Whether he was eating with Cabrera or what i dont know, but he lost flexibility. Ron Darling did a great job of breaking it down on SNY when we were playing them, going split screen with Willis now and Willis two years ago. He lost his leg kick and turn due to less flexibility caused by being too big. So at this point, Willis for Humber and Gomez, take the salary dump of rodriguez since they can move Inge back to catcher, and maybe we got a deal. I would hate to throw Heilman in, but we may have to, but I would take willis at the back end of our rotation, with a possibility that he could get to the front end if he cuts some calories.

    • rd says:

Give em Hielman and keep our prospects…… and keep that secret about Dontrell’s weight on the down low just in case tigers are reading this blog….

  11. therealsince86 says:

I have seen on Mlbtraderumors that this trade is still alive. I would think that the Tigers were willing to give the money to Pudge bec. they had no idea they could get Cabrerra. Now with that there does not have to be a power hitting catcher that is over paid.
I would easily do a Humber, Schnieder, Church trade. Maybe throw in a reliever as well.

    • Coolpapabell says:

If we trade Humber, Schnieder, Church, we better get Fukudome.

That said, I don’t think this move would hurt our chances of trading for Johan. The Twins might want Church though.

      A little dream world…..

      Santana
      Pedro
      O.P.
      Maine
      Willis

      I will wake up now.

  12. inPhilyHell says:

Heilman, Humber, and Church for Willis and Jacque Jones would get detroit the same ~15mil savings.

Detroit gets the setup guy they lacked last year, cheap #5 starter, and salary relief. Church and Jones (last year #s not included) are a wash.

They might want Pelfrey instead of Humber which might make me think twice.

  13. firemetmanagement says:

The worst thing that ever happened to the Mets was Wilpon buying out Doubleday 6-7 years ago.

The Mets payroll is currently around 90 million dollars (115 million – 12 million for Glavine – 7 million for LoDuca – 6 million for Green – 3 million for Estrada’s salary which they will dump + 2 million for the raise that Castillo got). They’ve cut over 25 million since last year and they now have a new stadium coming which will bring in extraordinary revenue, a new tv network SNY (cash cow), have had incredible increases in gates the last few years, received 20 million yearly in Citifield naming rights, and have increased ticket prices through the roof on us, and they’ll continue to raise ticket prices. It’s time to start acting like a BIG MARKET TEAM and have a payroll that is more than 35% of the NYY and more than 55% of Boston. Even if the Mets added Willis, Pudge, AND Santana…. that would still only put the payroll at around 123 million [95 million + 13 million for Pudge + 7 million for Willis+ 13 million for Santana (his salary this year) - 5 million w/ Schneider going to Detroit]. And Delgado’s and Martinez salaries (combined ~35 million) will come off next year, as will Wagner’s salary (13 million). And thus it should not be a problem to give Pudge the extension for 13 million in ‘09. Yes he might be on the list and yes he is not the same offensive player he used to be- but he is an upgrade both offensively and defensively (especially) over the cr*p catchers we currently have.
And he is a winning player that could help change the culture of this choking franchise.

I’m not saying they have the chips to get Santana in addition to Willis, Pudge, but if they did, MONEY SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE for what is supposed to be a BIG MARKET TEAM.

There is no reason this team cannot have a payroll in the 150 -160 million range, if need be, with all of the incredible revenue streams pouring in! And getting Williis, Pudge, etc. would still only put it at 123 million with the math above- and you can still sign a few relievers, etc. and have it be under 130 million.

I am completely fed up and disgusted with Freddie Coupons, and as I said, the worst thing that ever happened to this franchise was when Doubleday was bought out.

So just sign Livan Herandez, raise ticket prices 20%, and go finish in 3rd place Freddie Coupons..I hate you. I will not spend a penny on this cheap, pathetic team.

And if any of you are happy/content with this, just go ahead and continue to go to games, buy merchandise, etc., and continue to get ripped off by this disgrace of a franchise.
